A few categories of candidates for the manager position were identified before the end of the season.
There are a couple who would be considered ideal appointments, and who would be able to get on the list for top jobs in any country in Europe. If we can land one of them, and do so within the timeframe which will allow us to prepare for Champions League qualifiers, I think we’d all be happy (apart from those incapable of happiness, you know who they are).
Then there are managers with clear potential who have overachieved with resources available to them, but who also have a bit of European competition experience. You might know less about them, but their CVs can talk. This list is more extensive.
It’s also worth remembering how Celtic (and others) operate in certain respects when appointing a manager. Clubs often interview potential managers who don’t fit their required profile out of courtesy.
If a candidate of a certain profile in the game (or at the club) asks to be considered, it’s likely Celtic would interview him instead of rejecting him out of hand. Football is a tight, interconnected, industry, where making contacts is preferable to breaking them, so don’t be distracted by newspaper stories that someone or other has been interviewed. The story is likely to be accurate, but the context will mislead.
The process itself also changes how candidates are viewed. What the potential manager says about strategy, recruitment, technology are all likely to inform the club no his suitability.
Brendan Rodgers fits the bill before formal interviewing got underway, but he’s certainly not the only high-profile candidate under consideration, and I know others are making solid running.
The important thing to bear in mind right now, is that the moment a deal is done it will be announced, and that until that moment, don’t waste your time thinking you know what’s going to happen. There are too many variables to be certain of anything.

Sorry didn’t watch sky, just going by comments on here etc.
Yeh i get my hopes up, i would love to see a top manager in charge my club.
McGhee/Houston type appointment, don’t rule it out.
You don’t get yourself a heated driveway by throwing money around at top managers.
I wouldn’t read too much into Celtic’s statement positive or negative. Off the top of my head:
1. It’s going to be Rodgers but there’s more process to go through so an announcement isn’t imminent, i.e. calm down everyone;
2. It might be Rodgers but we’re also considering others and haven’t decided;
3. We met Rodgers out of courtesy but don’t want him and the statement is to get out ahead of the announcement that it’s not him;
4. Rodgers met Celtic out of courtesy but doesn’t want the job and we want to get out ahead of the story;
5. A generic statement that the press aren’t close to the process so don’t read anything into the “will he won’t he” saga to be played out over the coming days.
And so on…
I’m rather perplexed, and bemused, by the club’s “there is no preffered candidate” statement.
So probably no Rodgers.
How many candidates have actually been interviewed?
Any idea PAUL?
I demand to know THEIR names!
:-)
HH!!
RARARASPUTIN. I think no.5 is the most likely of your statements.H.H.
Henrik Larsson
Dan Petrescu
Coach at Augsburg in Germany
Peter Bosz (Maccabi)
Francky Dury
kAA Gent coach who’s name u am not going to attempt.
Zoran Mamic
Just a few who might be on the real list. Francky Dury interests me most.
I think the PLC realised that the positive reaction to Brendan….was too much for them to manage.
So….pour cold water on it.
Says to me that another cheap as chips project manager is on the cards.
I might be wrong…..but i doubt it.
HH
Very sensible and reasoned article paul67, takes in to full account the rigorous process involved and challenges the board faces in appointing a new Celtic manager
Maybe actually reading the article might not be a bad idea
bmcuwp,
hi did you have any luck setting up a giving page for kitalba?
I recon Paco would Jemez them in Peter.

I’d think the informal process started a while ago. I don’t think the media circus that formal interviews brings does anyone any favors
There’s the Peter Lawwell list then there’s the other candidates brought by Desmond.
We had the same process last time which ended in a Roy Keane debacle and Ronny as manager. Ronny gets to walk away with half a years salary in his hip with an untainted CV while we fight out the moneyball coach v the ticket sales manager. I expect the same net result from either route unless we get lucky.
The safest option is Neil Lennon. Proven track record, knows the club, European record and can work with a reducing budget.
The gamble with Neil is his life outside football and what could be a volatile relationship this time around with Lawwell.
Gordon Strachan would be next but again a gamble with the SFA compensation and possible fan disengagement.
Now….you are in charge.
What is the correct approach.
We have an important CL campaign coming up.
Do you: A: Appoint a manager with European experience, who wont be cheap.
B: Appoint a cheap as chips manager, with no European experience
Its not rocket science.
Far from it.

My first choice would be Phillip Cocu. Spent a number of years with the youth teams at PSV. Became assistant manager then manager, winning two league titles. Got through CL group and took Atletico Madrid to penalties.
John Collins saying in the Evening Times that John Hughes should be considered for the Celtic job as he has done such a good job at Inverness. So another one in the frame. H.H.

Brendan or Davie Moyes,…. Neil Lennon or Malky McKay.
Who do you favour?
What is the smart play?

Dermot Desmond says new manager in “3 or 4 days”
Paul67
I accept all that you say regarding the process but back in March when it was becoming clear that Ronny was for the off I stated very clearly to friends that Celtic should do everything to get Brendan. He is the man to takes back up to where we want to be.
He has always spoken eloquently about Celtic. He is a supporter and he is an excellent coach. Is he any good as a manager……lets face it he was a Steven Gerrard slip away from winning the EPL with Liverpool. TBH I never actually thought it would happen because of the league and the financial constraints.
I see mention of Peter Houston…..If it is someone like Brendan, Moyes, or Keane then they would need someone who knows the Scottish game as part of their team. There are only two candidates that we should consider….Peter and John Hughes. Their experience and knowledge would be a great asset to a manager who brings a different skill set but their knowledge of the Scottish game is limited.
I know this seems like imposing someone on a new manager but they would be short sighted not to include someone with that type of background.

Any more word on the Huns signing
Barton, kranjcer Dorrans and Cummings ?
They are just putting the finishing touches on John Eustace 4 year deal, patience my bhoy….:0
What about an H.H. partnership Houston and Hughes or Hughes and Houston both are very experienced and both know Celtic and Scottish football. We could probably get both for less than one of the other big names being mentioned. H.H.
THE GREEN MAN SAYS SACK THE BOARD on 18TH MAY 2016 1:51 PM
Of that group Brendan Rodgers.

This is how bad it is.
I went into the barbers and got a crew cut….skinhead style.
I now look like a ‘Bovver Boy’…Dick Emery version:)
Thats how bored i am waiting for something to happen at CP:)

@The exiled Tim
I reckon all the crap about DD being unhappy and will push for a change is just that, crap.
******************************************************
Yip, it all was crap and fantasist pish. If anyone actually believed that DD would be absent and not know exactly what was going on is barmy. I don’t believe for one second that DD doesn’t know what is going on and it has his blessing and input.
Was DD Live from a golf course no doubt….

I concur….Brendan for me.
Cue….Neil Lennon:)

jude2005 is Neil Lennon \o/ on 18th May 2016 12:41 pm
Can I thro in Sanchez Flores??
jude,
I think Flores would be an outstanding appointment for us. Has got a European track record (Europa Cup under his belt), managed abroad and the UK. Started out his coaching at Real Madrid with the youngsters. Was particularly impressed the way he organised Watford into a solid team and kept them in the top league.
Don’t know if he would be interested, or if we could get him, but a top manager in my book.
HH Dan
THE GREEN MAN SAYS SACK THE BOARD on 18TH MAY 2016 1:51 PM
But I wouldn’t cry into my pillow if it was some big name ex player with a decent domestic managerial record but only good Euro experience as a player.
JFH
As you know I think you are normally one of the saner and reasonable characters on here.
You may be ok with the 2H’s but I doubt Mr Lawwell would sell many STs on the back of that announcement even to the O** F*** ers in the support
It’s like”Groundhog Day ” on here. I like almost every other poster on here have no idea who our next manager will be, so I do,nt bother contributing to the endless speculation, leave that to the MSM. Time to discuss is when they are appointed, we will have no say/bearing on the appointee. Now I’ve got a life to lead and hope EDB can get through his current situation. KTF Jim Hail Hail Hebcelt

What a killjoy. I bet you’re rubbish at pub chat ;)

PL should invite Benedict Cumberbatch( in his Sherlock guise) to assess all the candidates.
At least that would be entertaining:)
Imagine Benedict as Sherlock, interviewing Malky McKay , Peter Houston, and John Hughes:)
HH
Logged on last night and my spirits were lifted.
Brendan Rodgers soon to be appointed new Celtic manager was the chatter.
If true what a show of ambition.
What a desertion from our previous lack of ambition
Log back on at lunchtime today.
Looks like it ain’t Rodgers.
No doubt a cheap option again.
Increasing worried, frustrated and sickened.

When you sit back and watch this develop it’s really quite funny.
Over the last few days we all put our tuppence worth in, based largely on other’s ideas.
We largely know little about the candidates, put 2 and 2 from wee snippets and get 180 and know zilch about the club’s person spec.
Despite it all, we establish clear favourites and ultimately thay leafs to disappointment – that may just may work against the new appointee.
