Misleading process of appointing a manager

801

A few categories of candidates for the manager position were identified before the end of the season.

There are a couple who would be considered ideal appointments, and who would be able to get on the list for top jobs in any country in Europe. If we can land one of them, and do so within the timeframe which will allow us to prepare for Champions League qualifiers, I think we’d all be happy (apart from those incapable of happiness, you know who they are).

Then there are managers with clear potential who have overachieved with resources available to them, but who also have a bit of European competition experience. You might know less about them, but their CVs can talk.  This list is more extensive.

It’s also worth remembering how Celtic (and others) operate in certain respects when appointing a manager. Clubs often interview potential managers who don’t fit their required profile out of courtesy.

If a candidate of a certain profile in the game (or at the club) asks to be considered, it’s likely Celtic would interview him instead of rejecting him out of hand. Football is a tight, interconnected, industry, where making contacts is preferable to breaking them, so don’t be distracted by newspaper stories that someone or other has been interviewed.  The story is likely to be accurate, but the context will mislead.

The process itself also changes how candidates are viewed. What the potential manager says about strategy, recruitment, technology are all likely to inform the club no his suitability.

Brendan Rodgers fits the bill before formal interviewing got underway, but he’s certainly not the only high-profile candidate under consideration, and I know others are making solid running.

The important thing to bear in mind right now, is that the moment a deal is done it will be announced, and that until that moment, don’t waste your time thinking you know what’s going to happen. There are too many variables to be certain of anything.

Guys can you help me. Yesterday all the talk was about B Rodgers (with a D) as our manager, today it’s not on? Is this from the SMSM as I don’t see anything on Celtic FC website.

Like when Canalmar was raising res12, saying Celtic were doing nothing I said then that when Celtic FcC make a statement that is when i will believe that statement. Celtic told the res12 guys that they had indeed questioned the SFA and they were not happy with reply and so we will have Gaurdian add next week. Res12 guys keep pushing and thanks for all your work and time.

I hope Celtic release who the new manger is on Friday and maybe cut into the breadmans 10 pages of glorious 4 year history of Sevco. HIBS for the cup.

All you guys who are telling us that you are not renewing your season tickets, don’t be so melodramatic like a feqqing diva, just do it and leave more seats free for me when I get back July/August l was a season ticket holder and never saw us win hehaw until I was 20 when we beat Dunfermline. You’ve never had it so good.

    …….,,,,,,,,…………..

Aye, and we want it to stay that way. That’s why we’re not renewing until we see the whites of his eyes.

If it’s not too sensitive, or personal, do you mind if I ask what your job is? Or, are your literary works all being penned as efforts towards a history degree?

Seriously? Haha, well that’s no good then. Wait a minute, quick adjustment. Yep sorted. Right:

Wtf are Celtic thinking aboot putting stovies on the menu? Stovies? Seriously ?

No renewal till the removal of stovies:-)

Sky news headlines: DD says Celtic will announce new manager in the next 4 to 5 days.

  10. Hi Paul67,

Thanks once again for the insight, but not for the first time in recent months your lead has confused me… Easily done I’ll admit…

Now then, you seem to indicate two levels of Mananger Celtic are interested in…

    The ideal appointments

Who we are all kind of expecting, after recent failings.

    Then these guys…

Then there are managers with clear potential who have overachieved with resources available to them, but who also have a bit of European competition experience. You might know less about them, but their CVs can talk.  This list is more extensive.

Now it’s this group you’ve described that interests me, insofar as, why would Celtic be looking at this group NOW?

First – Managers with clear Potential – like Mowbray and Deila furinstance. No, we can’t afford to go down this route again. Potential has caused us a small fortune in the last few Seasons. Forget Potential.

The other point is “this list is more extensive”. It sure is.

But tell me, why, if we were going to appiont a Manager with Potentail from an extensive list why would we not have done it before Christmas.

It was obvious at that point that RD was going. He was not backed during the January transfer window.

Why, if we are looking for a Manager with Potentail would we not have appointed him then, to give him the maximum opportunity to get some players in during January and get his team ready for the UCL qualifiers?

No, it beggers belief that we would appoint such a Manager to take the reigns in June for hugely important qualifiers that begin in July.

    Yours in Confusion

    Hail Hail

  11. Celtic close to managerial appointment, says Dermott Desmond

Celtic candidates ‘all worthy of job’ – Desmond

Celtic may decide on their new manager within a couple of days, according to their biggest individual shareholder Dermot Desmond.

Desmond told the BBC the club has interviewed “in excess of six” candidates, with Brendan Rodgers, 43, known to be among them.

And the former Liverpool boss was described as “a great manager” by the Irish businessman.

“All of the people that we’ve interviewed merit the job,” he said.

On Wednesday morning, Celtic released a statement saying there was no preferred candidate and that they would take their time over the appointment.

“We’re excited about the managers we’ve interviewed and we’ve discussed, and hopefully in the next few days we will decide, and enter negotiations,” said Desmond.

Rodgers is favourite for the Celtic job with many bookmakers

“There’s lots of people – I wouldn’t speculate on who is the person at this point in time.”

Asked whether Rodgers was one of those interviewed, Desmond replied: “I can’t tell a lie.

“He’s a great manager. He’s proved it at Liverpool and I think he’s a worthy candidate for Celtic – as all the other candidates are.”

Norwegian Ronny Deila left the manager’s job after two years at Celtic.

Under Deila, the club won two successive Premiership titles, taking their current run of Scottish top-flight successes to five in a row, the previous three won under Neil Lennon.

However, they have not reached the group stages of the Champions League since Lennon’s time in charge.

Northern Irishman Rodgers and Scottish former Celtic defender Malky Mackay, 44, have spoken to the club about the vacancy.

Both started their managerial careers at Watford and Mackay had a spell in charge of Cardiff City, while Rodgers was manager with Reading and Swansea City before joining Liverpool.

Mackay was sacked by Wigan Athletic six months before Rodgers was let go by Liverpool in October.

Four other former Celtic players – David Moyes, Roy Keane, Paul Lambert and Lennon – as well as former West Brom boss Steve Clarke have also all been strongly linked with the Celtic job.

  12. Are there any potential Celtic assistant managers high on the list of potential Celtic managers. Sounds like a silly question that, eh?

  15. CHAIRBHOY on 18TH MAY 2016 3:32 PM

I think as a club it can send a bad message to candidates if you sack a manager that’s still on for a treble, as RD was before Christmas.

  16. Why does this potential new manager always play players out of position. Why doesn’t he play the kids and why does he never have a plan B?

Get him out before he gets in!

  17. Looks like a wee bit of miscommunication between Celtic execs, part owners, PR etc.

Has Dermot got his hand on the tiller this time and are the execs and PR fumbling in the dark?

If so then hopefully my renewal will also soon be in the post along with someone else’s P45.

  19. glendalystonsils on

If Dermot reckons all 6 candidates merit the job, maybe the last question to be asked will be ‘how little money would you do it for?’. Like a reverse auction, maybe the candidate who quotes the lowest figure gets the job:-))

  20. Dermot calling the shots —good to see.

Lawwell — you can close the door on the way out.

Rodgers would be a good appointment and the support would rally behind him.

  21. Weeminger @ 3:47PM,

    Well, I guess so.

And looking how we ended the Season it looks like it was the “classy” thing to do.

But and it’s a big but – it only makes sense if we now appoint a Manager who has the knowledge and experience to take the current squad, add some quality, get them organised and motivated to make a Very Serious attempt at UCL qualification.

Otherwise it looks more like indecision or even worse, parsimoniousness to the point of recklessness.

You’d have thought we’d have a manager lined up, what with the CL qualifiers, and knowing Ronny was for the off for the last month or two.

    GEORDIE MUNRO

There isn’t really, but it is the timing of them. if DD knew that a statement was going out why did he make a statement with a different timeline? in the Club statement I got the impression by the wording there was no rush and the DD statement a couple of hours later says its days rather than weeks. So either DD never knew about the statement or the statement was wrong from the Club hence DD’s comments.
