Misleading process of appointing a manager

801

A few categories of candidates for the manager position were identified before the end of the season.

There are a couple who would be considered ideal appointments, and who would be able to get on the list for top jobs in any country in Europe. If we can land one of them, and do so within the timeframe which will allow us to prepare for Champions League qualifiers, I think we’d all be happy (apart from those incapable of happiness, you know who they are).

Then there are managers with clear potential who have overachieved with resources available to them, but who also have a bit of European competition experience. You might know less about them, but their CVs can talk.  This list is more extensive.

It’s also worth remembering how Celtic (and others) operate in certain respects when appointing a manager. Clubs often interview potential managers who don’t fit their required profile out of courtesy.

If a candidate of a certain profile in the game (or at the club) asks to be considered, it’s likely Celtic would interview him instead of rejecting him out of hand. Football is a tight, interconnected, industry, where making contacts is preferable to breaking them, so don’t be distracted by newspaper stories that someone or other has been interviewed.  The story is likely to be accurate, but the context will mislead.

The process itself also changes how candidates are viewed. What the potential manager says about strategy, recruitment, technology are all likely to inform the club no his suitability.

Brendan Rodgers fits the bill before formal interviewing got underway, but he’s certainly not the only high-profile candidate under consideration, and I know others are making solid running.

The important thing to bear in mind right now, is that the moment a deal is done it will be announced, and that until that moment, don’t waste your time thinking you know what’s going to happen. There are too many variables to be certain of anything.

well thats the thing isn’t it, Ronnie’s dad even knew weeks ago he was leaving and its only now we are looking? bit amateurish.

We don’t know the ins and outs and we are jumping at shadows. They may have approached someone weeks ago and got down a bit and they pulled out we don’t know. But if we want a decent manager and the fans on side to renew it needs to be a name. At first I was looking at the cheapies to replace Ronnie but in light of BTM, Lenny and now RD I think the board need to push the boat out. Also add in the res 12 and may by hun collusion, the board need a win.

  2. Why is it that when we sign a player, appoint a new manager etc that it drags on for days (weeks). I am not on my own thinking this but I am never confident that we can secure anyone until I see them in the hoops. We don’t seem to do things the easy way, there always seems to be the potential for a last minute hiccup. Suppose it goes back to the saga with Judas. For once Celtic just get it done and give us something to be happy about. Man U, Chelsea etc always get who they want and although not as financially as big as those, we are Celtic and lets not forget that.

    Kev,

As you say. There isn’t really much contradiction.

I don’t think the club statement reads as weeks.

Seriously? There ain’t even any reading between the lines to see the gaping differences.

DD provides an update personally within hours of Celtic PR stating they are not in a position to provide daily updates. Not only does he provide an update he confirms a candidate for the job has been interviewed and provides details that there has been +6 interviewees at this point all of whom are worthy of the job.

For me, if that detail is available and the man owning the largest shareholding and controls the club by proxy of the support of other large shareholders is willing to provide this detailed information then there is an issue with communication between boardroom, execs and PR.

Especially so in such a short time frame after a statement stating we are saying nothing.

Why does everyone see Brendan Rodgers as a high quality candidate?

Ronny Deila has won three more titles than Brendan Rodgers.

  8. Expectation management in full flow from Celtic and Paul 67.

Said last night that i expect to be underwhelmed but live in hope.

That we are still scrambling around having known months ago Ronny was off is typical to our approach on the football sides of things.

There is no discernible plan for the football side of our club.

Like Ronnie’s team of the last two years we are reactionary to circumstances as they unfold.

This is what happens when you let accountants run things.

Sky news headlines: DD says Celtic will announce new manager in the next 4 to 5 days

Are you sure they didn’t say forty-five days? :-)

  10. Geordie Munro on

    Klv,

Oh aye. We’re all keen to get the new guy in place but today, tomorrow or yesterday doesn’t make much difference when the players are scattered around the globe on holidays.

I’ll give it up to 5 days as the great moustachioed says, before I give it much more concern;)

  11. Recruitment isn’t a straightforward process cos you’re dealing with people, who can be fickle. Circumstances change constantly. The person you’ve got lined up might stay where they are, or they might get a better offer from somewhere else. That’s just how it is. It’s only been a short period of time since Ronny Deila decided to move on. Even if the club had targets lined up already you still have to go through the interview process. It sounds as tho things are progressing steadily and we’re close to decision time. If we had appointed someone within the first week the club would have been accused of going behind Ronny’s back. And making a decision so quickly without looking at all the ootions would have been crazy. But with some Celtic supporters you just can’t win.

For me, it wasn’t the hype. It was showing that we have ambition and are willing to spend.

Also taking the reigns off Peter as well, BR would want total control in fact any of the big names will, But if we got cheap peter will still have control is my fear as well as the club standing on the precipice. Cheap manager again shows we have no ambition again, RD, BTM and they got lucky with Lenny.

I take your point. I just don’t think Rodgers’ record to date, instills any confidence that he is up to the Celtic Job.

Having said that, I am a great believer in the right man, in the right place, at the right time. This can only ever be judged to be the case with the benefit of hindsight.

As ever, whoever is chosen, will have my full support, until such time as results, over a reasonable period of time, prove him to be a failure.

  15. Fan-a-tic

Agree, It looks like the leader has Lawwells paws all over it preparing us for a puppet.

We know where that got us with Ronny, Mowbray and Lenny.

Lawwell has to realise he is no longer Director of Football but editor in chief of CQN

If there is a better candidate than Rodgers I have yet to hear his name in the public domain. I dread an appointment of Lenny — which would suggest we plan to close all the top tiers..

  16. Maybe Rodgers has asked for a couple of days to see can he arrange a pay off deal with Liverpool. The rumour is he is getting 5 million a year but that will be cut off if he gets a new job. If Liverpool play hardball then Rodgers might have to say Thanks Dermot but it would cost me too much to take job so give it to one of the other 6.

I suspect some one probably Rodgers has been offered the job, but they couldn’t possibly indicate that as if a late hitch arose they would have to go to their 2nd choice.

I sense tensions between the Walrus and the Sharp suited man a statement from the club is quickly followed by the Walrus barking and showing his teeth. I now think the SSM will see this as meddling and may keep us all waiting to make any pressure on the CEO work it needs to come from the board so we are where we are non the wiser. H.H.

The statement is basically saying don’t believe press speculation. If there’s anything to say you’ll hear it from the club.

Now whether, you chose to believe DD speaking represents a statement from the club is open to debate, but the one thing it is not is speculation.

In summary, the club has stated that we’ve spoken to number of candidates and will announce the appointment in due course. DD has stated that we have spoken to a number of candidates and may announce an appointment soon.

    Is there a material difference.

I believe Celtics statement this morning is a sign a that an agreement has been reached between the Club & BR. I can’t, for the life of me, imagine any other reason why they would come out today to state the opposite – it makes absolutely no sense.

I think they are saving the big news to overshadow the unveiling of the Zombies new Crest on their kit. After big Mike takes ownership of the RFC Crest it has been suggested in some quarters that Sevco are about to unveil the rival RIP Crest.
