The joy and ecstasy of others as they celebrate a Champions League win reminds us of what football is all about. Crafting a team, these days from across the globe, capable of holding their nerve against Messi, riding their luck occasionally, and seeing it through in the end. No Liverpool fans cared about the quality of the occasion in Madrid on Saturday, finals are about winning, as a few Celtic fans remarked the previous week.
The celebrations of a club 200 miles to the south did make me feel disenfranchised, though. We were once what they are now, and we can never be the same again, due to the way TV contracts are written.
These days our European targets are more modest, but we should still plan for more than we have had in the last couple of decades. If nothing else, it is better to fail planning to succeed, than to modestly accept a 7-0 reversal as an indication of the way it has to be.
The now famous Andy Robertson tweet from 18 August 2012 was clear, “#needajob.” The less-aspirational Newco were also in dire straights that day, but celebrated a 5-1 win over East Stirlingshire. Andy was earning less that every one of the East Stirlingshire players that day, but he won a Champions League before either club won a major trophy. We might never win the Champions League again, but we need to do everything in our power to get close, without taking console in domestic wins.

Hravtski & Ernie
Thanks – the second one is the one I saw.
Is it a requirement for Law Professors at Glasgow Uni to be DOBERS?
Here’s one of Tomkins predecessors, Andrew Dewar Gibb, giving it laldy.
“Wheresoever knives and razors are used, wheresoever sneak thefts and petty pilfering are easy and safe, wheresoever dirty acts of sexual baseness are committed, there you will find the Irishman in Scotland with all but a monopoly.”
Gibb of course was a founder and leader of the SNP.
Bob Kelly may have signed most of the Lisbon Lions, as the Kelly Kids, but those players would never have got anywhere if he had continued to rule the roost. He was clueless. Thank Ghod Mr Stein returned and moulded them into the great team they became.
Great finds by @pobheid

Courage. Belief. Outstanding. Been a long time coming ?
Celtic fans taking it well, I see.
Ah well his history on twitter has caught up with him and we now have it confirmed he clearly has an agenda.
Scumbag.

Celtic have had many fine full-backs, among them some of our greatest players. Paul Telfer wasn’t one of them, but a fine player nevertheless and a good example of a professional footballer. Fact is though, if Michael leaves, or even if he doesn’t we need someone to play in that position. Now if I was already at Celtic I would be saying to the coaches, I can play there, just show me the way. Show me those Disco Lights….
Mr Tomkins appears to be an English chap – I haven’t heard him speak.
Educated in Kent & London though.
His choice of local football club is one thing.
His choice of language is another…
Since he is keen to talk of liability at this time, perhaps he could accept unconditional responsibility for using sectarian inspired supremacist language on social media to which many of his constituents would take exception.
Can we anticipate a full & prompt response.

Big Efe released by Derby….just sayin like….

Hi Paul67,
Excellent piece…
“These days our European targets are more modest, but we should still plan for more than we have had in the last couple of decades. If nothing else, it is better to fail planning to succeed, than to modestly accept a 7-0 reversal as an indication of the way it has to be.
There are many, many reasons why it is crucial for Celtic to stay relevant in Europe and there many arguments as to how this is achieved or even whether it’s achievable.
However, the last three seasons have proven that if we strive to be competitive in Europe we it brings it’s own rewards, not only is it self sustaining in Football and business terms it is actually, augments every aspect of the Club.
Meaning the players have got experience at a higher level, they are more valuable in Football and business terms.
We can buy and sell players at a higher value, giving us value in Football and business terms.
We can attract better players and Coaches, giving us value in football and business terms.
Our turnover improves, our profit improves, it is great for our sponsors and business partners, giving us value in business terms.
We win domestic trophies, have great European nights, we get kudos on a Global scale, giving us true value in Football terms.
Many have thought the business plan doesn’t exist to get is there, or it’s too risky, I’ve always disagreed with that and what the last three Seasons have shown it’s not only workable it’s imperative.
We don’t have to excel ourselves we don’t have to punch above our weight.
We are the 30th most valuable Club in Europe, if we perform at that level that will do nicely…
Hail Hail

What part did the ‘clueless’ Bob Kelly play in the return of Jock Stein?
HENRIK1967@5:19 -james Forrest did something similar today, but you did it wee bit better
Actually, I don’t have any problem with Tomkins being on top of this issue.
As an MSP he’s entitled to take up any issue that is relevant to his constituency & constituents.
However, he seems to be less than fully aware of the implications & ramifications of either his attacks on Celtic FC over this issue or his careless use of crass phrases like WATP. In other words, he is perceived by elements on both sides of the football divide as having taking sides based as much on his own personal football allegiance as for any other reason.
He claims to have the interests of victims at the heart of his efforts but he has managed to deflect much of that attention from their plight to another issue entirely of his own making.
Our CEO’s letter seems to have the opposite effect from what was intended. Trying to placate those calling for Celtic to take action it seems to have increased the clamour.
Some vicitims are suing Celtic and that will be why the club’s insurers are heavily involved, but that insurers investigation is driven by a typical insurers need to look after their own interests first, their clients second and any other person’s coming in a distant last.
Without knowing the terms of reference for the enquiry by the independent lawyer it’s impossible to know whether it is purely a self defence exercise by the club & their insurers or is also designed to root out all such abuse from that time so that the club can put things right.
Either way, Tomkins comes over at present as more opportunist than jurist.

Think I’ve sorted out the right back position, (you’re always gonna have your naysayers that’s the World we live in) so now lets turn to left back. What Neil needs to do is pre-empt the decision making process at Celtic. He needs to make the decisions, not wait for the inevitable call to the Boss’s office. To this end, sell Tom Rogic to the highest bidder before his next trip down under, keep Chaim though. And, if Neil can sign Birger Meling from Rosenborg, and if Celtic get a £50 million bid for Kieran Tierney then send him on his way. Kieran hasn’t been all that effective in recent times, hasn’t been particularly professional this season, so get him fully fit, fully packed and send him packing. With our blessing of course. Two miillion Euro should land Birger.

Celtic mac-in what way has KT been unprofessional?

I f you have to ask that question, you have not been paying attention!

Eh! No – are you kiddin’? There was a guy this morning moaning about the length of Mick’s list;)
Hail Hail
Celtic mac-I haven’t been paying attention so can you please indulge me?
Ernie Lynch,
Bob Kelly didn’t really want Jock Stein; he simply couldn’t ignore how successful Jock was. He had earmarked Sean Fallon as manager. Jock himself didn’t expect to become manager because he wasn’t a Catholic. Even when he was appointed, Bob Kelly thought he could continue as he had during Jimmy McGory’s time as manager, i.e, Bob Kelly picked the team. If you are old enough to have lived during that time, you will know how idiotic that proved. Bob Kelly was many and many good things; running the football side of Celtic wasn’t one of them.
Bada Bing @ 7:04
Efe never played a game for derby maybe that’s why they never won promotion ? HH
Celtic mac – to be fair looking for £50 mil for KT is up there with the Huns looking for more than £4.5 million for more or less?
BADA-is KT away for £50 million on that list ?
Fairhill Bhoy
Not sure if you’re referring to something I said much earlier about PL.
It was in response to someone who wanted to blame him for Ronny Deila but not credit him with BR.
The inconsistency of it, rather than the substance is what spoke to me.
From memory, DD recruited WGS at Cheltenham too.

Immorales is not the first name I would have bracketed Kieran with, but each to their own favourites!
Parkheadcumsalford
The version I read was that Jock had been approached by a team in England when he was at Hibs.
He spoke to Bob Kelly off the record asking for his advice about the offer.
At some point during the conversation Bob casually said to Jock “How would you like to come back?”
Bob Kelly was often maligned as the man who supervised Celtic’s decline, but he knew that if Jock came back it would not be as a “Jimmy McGrory” type manager of even as a joint manager. He’d been successful at Dunfermline & Hibs as manager with full control over playing matters & would not agree to anything less.
The rest as they say….
HH
