Modest European targets should never be accommodated

183

The joy and ecstasy of others as they celebrate a Champions League win reminds us of what football is all about.  Crafting a team, these days from across the globe, capable of holding their nerve against Messi, riding their luck occasionally, and seeing it through in the end.  No Liverpool fans cared about the quality of the occasion in Madrid on Saturday, finals are about winning, as a few Celtic fans remarked the previous week.

The celebrations of a club 200 miles to the south did make me feel disenfranchised, though.  We were once what they are now, and we can never be the same again, due to the way TV contracts are written.

These days our European targets are more modest, but we should still plan for more than we have had in the last couple of decades.  If nothing else, it is better to fail planning to succeed, than to modestly accept a 7-0 reversal as an indication of the way it has to be.

The now famous Andy Robertson tweet from 18 August 2012 was clear, “#needajob.” The less-aspirational Newco were also in dire straights that day, but celebrated a 5-1 win over East Stirlingshire.  Andy was earning less that every one of the East Stirlingshire players that day, but he won a Champions League before either club won a major trophy.  We might never win the Champions League again, but we need to do everything in our power to get close, without taking console in domestic wins.

  1. Good morning CQN from an insomniac filled Garngad, been up since 4am wtf is that about??

Weather is pish and is to remain pish.

So the transfer window opens on the 11th, a week today, I hope as everyone does, that we can get some early business done. The last 3 windows have not been that great and our squad needs fresh blood. As I say the window opens on the 11th if June followed by our first CL qualifier on the 9/10 of July, doesn’t give us long to bed some new players in.

  2. Good Morning – Mild Summers Morn In The Chilterns…

David 66, lots on rumours of extension deals offered to those in our current squad we assumed were leaving… guess we won’t know who’s coming or going until the bhoys get back on 17th June…

As you say, I’d hope things regarding the important signings would be done by then and a semblance of next season’s first team are training together.

Three weeks from there, to get them ready for the first qualifier, ghen it’s uphill from then on.

    Hail Hail

  3. I see we are getting treated to all the usual guff about this year is the year that the Zombies will be taking the league title for the first time in their short history.

Every ex player of the deed club coming out with some pish about Gerard will do this and do that ffs are these peepel so feckin thick, no need to answer.

Even some no mark radio presenter last night on radio Snyde could not hide his disgust and hatred of our club and NFL.. Turned it off after 10 mins shocking the shoite he was spouting.

Let’s do our business get on the park and do the real business and blow these fecker said away.

  4. reading back, another evening of pure rubbish on cqn.

    still judith on the weather.

  5. I am up and off to Paris for a week. By the time I get back, I expect we will have signed a whole when o’ players :-)

Or, more likely, it will be the usual model of a couple of early signings of whom we will express disapproval, followed up by landing our 3rd or 4th tier targets who have not been courted by better options.

Plenty of room for expressing al the emotions from disappointment, via fear, right through to embarrassment and disgrace.

The only consolation I can offer is that we have done likewise for the past 15 years or so, and it hasn’t ended too badly for us.

Though, some may prefer the consolation that, one day, embarrassment and disgrace will be our lot.

    See y’all soon

Anyway, football is quiet at this time, so best time to look at Water Lilys or whatever the better half has in mind.

Looks like that document might be legit. Which makes you wonder if its a one off or if they’re sitting on other stuff waiting for an opportune moment. Very sinister.

…see you Brendan Rodgers to the right of the pic, how old is that guy!?

  8. Celtic Mac @ ages ago

Gordon Strachan definitely had a lightbulb moment converting Paul Telfer to full back given he’d never played there in his puff, till he rolled up at Celtic Park, you remember him more fondly than me . Celtic managers have had to do this down through the years MON’s bright spark was Didier Agate saving Celtic another bunch of money, in buying a finished article.

Anthony Ralston’s career has been ravaged by one serious injury after another, he even came back from the Dundee Utd loan spell injured, and his chances to develop have been seriously hindered, with no prospect whatsoever of starting a CL qualifying campaign, as the number one, number two.

Since Celtic failed to fill this position properly ( again ) last summer , we’ve had four players start games at right back Lustig, Gamboa, Ralston, and Toljan, all four , not without varying degrees of limitation, arguably we got away with one for domesticity, but it cost us dearly against Athens in particular.

The new Celtic RB will cost a serious chunk of the Dembele money.

Sorry big Pete, time to go….you are becoming an embarrassment…

Stand up for the victims…children before reputations….

  11. It’s a fallow period. Can’t comprehend the guys who want to come on here and complain before the window has even opened.

This supposed leak from a recruitment meeting, don’t know what alarms me more. If real , is it the leak or the contents?

  13. How sevco get on this coming season won’t be decided down govan way . It will be decided in our boardroom ,by the people paid handsomely to keep our club in pole position , a job they are doing only just , make no mistake they have improved ,it’s time Desmond , lawell ,and co ,upped the gears again . With regards that snyde programme

Like ALL the others ,they have always hated us , why any Celtic fan listens to these bigots is beyond me . H H

  14. The list looks like LC (Lee Congerton’s) and dated 2 April. Interesting that we were interested in Scott McTominay on loan.

  15. The leaked document is the latest in a long line of insights and concerns about the way we go about player transfers. Nothing would surprise me as my expectations are so low. Don’t be surprised if the Brendan Rodgers saga is far from over, i think there are many stories still to be told. Last summer we had John McGinn in the palm of our hands yet fecked it up only to sign Mulumbu on a free with hours to spare. If that doesn’t scare you or make you wonder why Rodgers was offski at the first opportunity then you’re not paying attention.

  16. So it’s a) real b) shows low-level ambition c) confirmed as leaked d) looks like something the social committee at the local village fete would put together.

Way to go Celtic. Stay classy. FFS.

  17. David17

The Rat’s loyal recruitment servant Lee Congerton is front and centre in all of this.

    He’s therefore culpable.

the old phrase ‘the cheap thing is the dear thing’ springs to mind.

Not to say there aren’t quality bargains to be had, but they are the exception, not the rule.

    HH

  19. Remit~~~ Lee, go and find us up and coming prospects that will cost us nothing more than a development fee.

Report gets leaked and the support are not happy with the content, blame LC and BR, pathetic.

  20. Father Jack

Some of the names on that list would break our transfer fee. We’re shopping in the overinflated English market. And elsewhere it’s bargain bucket.

It looks like we haven’t a clue and we brainstormed a few names from our own small circle – Brandon Parker of Man City reserves and Hibs fame for example.

    We look amateurish.
