Money on the table will decide European football future

286

I see the Sun have a steer today that Celtic “will join forces” with clubs from Netherlands, Portugal and Belgium to oppose the suggestion from Barcelona and Bayern Munich that the likes of Manchester United should get automatic access to the Champions League, whether they qualify or not.

The consensus spreads beyond the countries mentioned above, Greece and Turkey also have large teams, unable to take advantage of lucrative domestic TV contracts.

As Barcelona’s Josep Bartomeu told the BBC, the FA Premier League presents a real threat to all clubs outside it. The suggestion is that TV and commercial values of the Champions League should be bolstered (which it would by having Manchester United next season instead of Galatasaray) to raise the income dividend for all participants.

This proposal would put more income onto Barcelona and Bayern’s top lines but it would not change the fundamental issue that the English and Welsh league generates vastly more income than any other domestic league. Raising income generated from Champions League football would not reduce the disparity in income from domestic football between England and Wales, and the rest.

What’s needed is a league to replace the existing domestic leagues, filled with big teams with large stadiums packed with supporters each week. There are enough big European clubs outside of England capable of fitting this criteria to fill two 20 team leagues.

Two divisions of 20, broadcast live across the world on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, each game played by huge clubs in front of >50,000 seater stadiums would dwarf the England and Wales league.

The earning potential is there to make it happen. What’s needed is someone to put money on the table.

  1. BRNOBHOY, my lad was 12 when I bought his first guitar – “it was the best day of my life” he said. He was quite accomplished on the keyboard and unlike his old man, who loves music, has an ear for it.

I didn’t buy him anything fancy but it was the right size for him and sufficed until he was ready to move on to bigger things. He’s a tad older these days and I’m sure has had another one or two “best days in his life” since then and hopefully ahead of him.

My advice – learn to drive before you buy your first Porsche ;-)

Just before Christmas,DAVIDOPOULOS mailed me with a fairly straightforward question, loaded though it was.

I eventually replied about a fortnight later, having trashed loads of earlier totally depressing answers.

In a nutshell, where are we,where are we going, and where will we be.

Believe me,old bean,I took no pleasure in my eventual response. And that was BEFORE the latest big-boy raid on the Crown Jewels.

I genuinely think we’re f….d medium-term. We can’t generate the money to grow because the country we play in is irrelevant in terms of viewing figures.

The big-boys won’t let us have a shot of the ball anymore.

(See also my post on this on page one yesterday)

Have you seen the Dad’s Army film, perchance…

    Totally agree.

I have been saying the same for years.

    PSV or Partick?

    Feyenoord or Falkirk?

    Sporting Lisbon or St Johnstone?

    Bring it on!

No disrespect or similar intended, bud. You asked an honest question-at my request-and the answers were not pleasurable to consider.

When I said it was loaded,it was. But only inasmuch that the conclusions were difficult to avoid! I appreciate that your intention was for constructive debate. So was mine. I just couldn’t form one from what you asked.

Because it made me think. And what I thought was not pleasant at all.

I seriously do not think we have any way out of this spiral to oblivion. The latest move by the big-boys will eventually happen, and then we will end up like Winton Rovers or Pollock. An irrelevance remembered fondly by a few.

  6. BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS 2:53,

Not seen the Dad’s Army film yet. I don’t know how to take that question! Are you suggesting that I am old enough to have been a member of the Home Guard? ;-)))

As regards your philosophical view of where we are – very difficult to argue against. It reminds me of a story my long lost brother (an accountant), not seen or spoken to him in a few years, told me. He was auditing a business in Paisley when the proprietor waved a wad of cash in front of him saying “Some people says this talks. Naw it disnae it f@*king shouts!”

Therein lies the problem the rich never seem to have enough money.

Hi Yamaha generally have a good entry level acoustic guitar-most music shops will give good advice and allow you to hear quality of sound before buying-GUMTREE ads also a good source for second hand guitars.

As other posters note steel strings can take a bit of getting used to on young fingers!

Justinguitar.com provides very good free online tutorials too that has followers playing songs with 2/3 chords very quickly.

Just back in and catching up. A 3/4 size guitar should do her. Nylon strings, not steel, which can be very hard on the fingers. Make sure the action (distance between the strings and fretboard) is not too high . Music shop should be able to advise.

Oh, and don’t spend too much in case she goes aff it !

    No, no, was just jesting.

I admit I found your response difficult to contradict – probably as difficult as you found it to write it, as the conclusions are grim.

The best I am hoping for is for the “bubble” to burst. But then, you know when you get two soapy bubbles that have stuck together, as soon as one bursts the other does too. Celtic are trying to get into that “other” bubble along the best of the rest. Depressing.

In my mind there is always a glimmer of hope, in that the bursting bubble would restore equilibrium to the sport. I may sound like a Luddite moaning about mechanised looms…but what’s wrong with a little destruction?

  10. It seems that there will be a embarrassing crowd for our televised cup-tie against Morton.

Yes the kick-off time and TV coverage can have an effect, but let’s be honest, the crowd will be smallish because a good number of Celtic supporters will not turn up – just like they didn’t turn up at the last two league fixtures against Ross County and ICT.

I bet if the tie had been against Sevco Rangers, you would not get a ticket for love nor money.

What does this say about the attitude of large minority of our core support?

I am not being overly critical, I just wonder what is going on – are we just bored and indifferent to anything other than CL qualification, and if this is not achieved, apathy sets in.

  11. GlassTwoThirdsFull on 24th February 2016 1:51 pm

I think the idea started kicking around a few years earlier – maybe after Milan knocked out Real Madrid in the early rounds.

I also seem to recall the chairman/owner of a club not too far away being involved in discussions as his team kept on getting knocked out early. Whatever happened to that club……..?

*and the greatest administrator the game has known was lauded for his involvement. Another area where bader got his greedy mits on that has effed the game up.

  12. Mr pastry I would suggest that there are large numbers of supporters who are angry or just bored with awful performances, a needlessly inept approach to running the club and our acceptance of corruption.

I still don’t think a lot of you understand quite how precarious our future is.

  14. Proudbhoy,

I think you mentioned Arbour Hill this morning. From about 10am on Saturday the 26th of March the Sean Heuston 1916 Society are arranging free Walking Tours of the 1916 sites around the GPO area and from 12 noon there is a Parade from the GPO to Arbour Hill.

It is advertised as a family event, face painting for kids etc (the face painters will be paid) unlike at other events.

If you look them up it might work if you are coming down.

I think there are some fans who fall into the category you mention.

But it doesn’t in anyway explain Mr pastrys point that the ground would be rammed if it were v the huns.

The ‘same’ huns many think are the root of the corruption.

    —————–

I agree with you that there is anger and apathy (not boredom yet).

I cannot accept that the club is run ineptly, or that there is any evidence of acceptance of corruption.

If you have concrete and costed proposals on how the club can be run in a different way, or, any evidence of club officials involved in acceptance of corruption, then I suggest you set out your case – I am sure that there would be many on here and elsewhere who would be interested.

You probably read my post on Sunday after I attended the Malaga v Real game. A football occasion as it should be off and on the park.

If football is an important part of the social fabric of nations that must apply to a community of nations. Indeed I first saw that term used in a paper on The Future of Professional Football in Europe by Ivo Belet a Belgian MEP. His recommendations became the White Paper on Sport and some of the issues raised became part of UEFA’S 11 point statement of principles.

My point here is the the EC/EU will not be standing idly by whilst a cartel fortunate enough to have clubs in bigger European countries kills off the rest.

They have the power to lever change in the social direction they want if the proposals are for closed leagues on a franchise basis.

That arguably removes the “specificity of sport” element that allows football to exempt itself from some EU laws on a case to case basis.

Football likes that exemption, in fact it was on the basis that European football should adopt the White Paper proposals or else, that football paid attention.

I’ve not kept up to date with developments in that area but I’d be surprised if the political lever was not pulled to produce fairer competition of which the EC has a load of laws to enforce that football currently manages to avoid because of the specificity of sport argument.
