Moneyball Christie, subversive right hemisphere

669

Celtic always had the look of winners last night, but until Odsonne Edouard pounced on the rebound from Ryan Christie’s shot, the outcome was in the balance.  We are going to face a lot of packed defences like that this season, though fortunately or not, that could be the last we see of them in the Europa League.

Christie was back to his best.  I know his stats are far from impressive and he is criticised (by others) for his decision making, but I spent almost three years during Brendan Rodgers time wanting someone to mix it up.  Take shots that would force the keeper to work or a defender to block, or play the low percentage pass that we all know is going to miss most of the time, but will result in loose balls in dangerous areas.

Those poor stats are a consequence of randomness, which is something we loved in Frank McGarvey, but that was before the stats came along to both inform and confuse.  Stats are all about interpretation, which is the real lesson of Michael Lewis’ Moneyball for those who never read the book, or those who did, but didn’t understand it.

I tried most of the second half to figure out what changes Neil Lennon made at halftime that freed up Jeremie Frimpong.  During the first half, he was so well shackled, I considered the Sarajevo left back as a possible recruit.  At the break, the suggestion was made to me, maybe he is better as an impact player?

Sarajevo certainly opened up at the break, which may have helped, but Jeremie was back at his impactful self during the second period.  Credit also to Greg Taylor, who had his best game in a Celtic shirt.

I’m still pretty gutted about not being in the Champions League and at the manner of our exit, but Pot 1 seed in the Europa is an important place to land.  Last week we spoke about how it was to our advantage that all domestic rivals also reach the group stage.  We didn’t want them having a week to plan games against St Mirren etc., while we traverse the Continent.  Not this season.

That kind of left hemisphere thinking was nowhere to be found once kick offs were underway last night.  You can’t fake this stuff, it is just not possible to subvert the tribal instinct (which is why nationalism is so potent, and why Celtic is my only identity).  But, in a crisp and sunny autumnal morning, logic is back on top.  No one will get an easy pass to the title this season, including Celtic.

Uefa’s methods of seeding have never been perfect, this is not tennis, but those pots are full of variance.  I’m hoping to avoid sides from the big nations.  Farewell, Copenhagen, Basel, Sporting, Rosenborg, Legia (sorry, Zbyszek) and yes, even Galatasaray.  Strong sides are out of Europe, the potential to join them was real.

Talk of another lockdown in Scotland, personally I think it will be 2 weeks starting with the School break a week on Monday. Boris might even make it 2 weeks as well for the Englanders.

Although it will be of the go to work variety, but shut down schools, pubs and restaurants.

We have been planning for it.

To a decreasing extent, we are still allowed to criticise our dear leaders. And rightly so.

We are in dangerous territory here with the Covid 19 emergency powers.

Look at the dictorial no sound on TV ruling. Scotland is the only country in the western world to ban sound. There is obviously no science in this decree or they would all do it.

That is why I fully support the campaign by Nicky Stewart and many other pub owners for a rethink.

I have expressed my opinion that the Celtic v New huns game on October the 17th is in doubt.

I agree, there are an awful lot of Euro Yoons on this site. 😀

Well done Celtic, but I never saw the game as I was in my local Pub…drinking many beers.

I am not too fussed about Europe this season to be honest but winning games is a good habit to get into. I have most of my focus on Celtic doing the Magical 10..(.like some others) thats what really matters to me this season…and then going for 11, 12 in a row.

  10. The Battered Bunnet is so much better at this than me, but i will give it a stab.

There is no doubt a circuit break was planned for 2 weeks, starting with the school Oct week. There is a lot of evidence, in certain jobs, where staff have been told to prepare.

However what has thrown a spanner in the works is the R rate.

Mr Leitch has said for a circuit break to work, the R rate has to be as low as 1.2/ 1.3 as a circuit break just gives a little boost.

Scotland R rate is, est 1.7 so circuit break is pointless, at this moment, as it was only get it down to 1.4 est, as we know, it has to go below one.

So Scot Gov are now in limbo waiting to see if R rate will reduce before next Fri.

That’s my understanding, as I say, TBB is so much more informed than me but I hope this helps, a little.

    Greenpinta,

I’ve no problem handing out criticism where due. Opening pubs and encouraging folk to eat out was a disaster waiting to happen and I said so at the time.

But to suggest NS is “itching” to lock us down again is just the type of stuff we hear from blind, Unionst ,JustNaw brigade who are incapable of engaging with a Yes-No debate other than “Just Naw”.

As for using up the UK’s furlough hand out. Dearie me, what scroungers we Scots have become. No wonder the Just Naw brigade are enraged. How dare wee Jimmy Krankie spend all her pocket money!

Anyway, thanks for your civil reply.

  14. Lot of talk recently, by politicians in the main it has to be said, of the use of “circuit breakers” as a tool to reduce the level of Covid-19 infection. Quite an old fashioned term these days, given that the current version is known as the RCD, and no it does not have any religious connotations. An advanced system could shut down a pub before Big Jimmy could order his second pint, it really is lightning quick. Older posters, okay Melbourne Mick, Gene and Philbhoy will be more familiar with the use of your actual fuse wire, 3 amp, 5amp, 16amp etc when more down to earth Dads would risk life and limb and the street lights to get the telly back on in the winter nights. I would say do not try this at home, but, where else are you going to try it? I hope against hope this loose kind of talk does not become, once again, part of the vernacular, though I hear wee Nicola did in fact blow a fuse when she found out that Margaret Ferrier MP had went to ground. A shock to all of us and no mistake.

I had a right good drink all day Wednesday in my local and then I had to meet my two old aunties in my local on Thursday morning, and they were drinking pots of tea and cake, while i had two Beers. It was quite an emotional reunion for us all, and after they had left i carried on drinking numerous beers til almost closing time. I didnt plan to go out yesterday ( Friday), but a mate phoned me at 11am on Friday morn to ask me for a favour.

So I just HAD to meet him in my local around 12.30pm. He had 5 or 6 brandies while I kept up with him drinking my usual beer LOL.

He left around 2pm…and ( shame on me)….I ended up staying to 10pm closing time….after another large quantity of Beers LOL.

I was going to “Dry Oot” a bit yesterday and I had no intention of going anywhere, but when my mate phoned at 11am….well…you know the rest LOL !

My horse Bets are on, and my Celtic bets also..with my Online Bookie, hopefully I will get some of the money that Ive spent in my Pub the last few days…Maybe not ? LOL

Im gonna have a wee lie doon right now, and have a nap til the Racing starts hopefully. No hangover as such…but my auld Body and Mind are tired.

  25. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Morning all.

Just got round to reading the Atlantic article on Covid-19 and the K number – posted on here recently.

Terrific piece. Respect to the CQNer who posted it (apologies – can’t recall who).

Regrettably – it reaffirms the largely shambolic handling of this crisis by UK political leaders.

(The “forest” analogy from the professor on Japan’s Covid-19 task force summed it up).

Meanwhile, this one caught my eye

    https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/sep/03/tory-peer-sandip-verma-accused-of-breaching-ministerial-code-with-uganda-deal

Yet another example of someone with precious little attainment in their career being “elevated” to a position of influence based on who they know.

Thank goodness for the four “F”s

    Family, Friends, Faith, Football

    Hail hail

    Keep The Faith

  26. JNP @ 9.41

Have we been told why the R number needs to be in the range of 1.3 for a “Circuit Break / Mini Lockdown” to work?

Why is 1.3 OK but 1.7 is not?

For the record I think Leitch is close to useless — his number range only goes up to 32.

Also Not-Jacinda seems to be getting terrible advice.

The SG testing programme is a disgrace — we must be the only country in the world to be shutting down testing capacity.

We should have tested the teachers before the schools went back to weed out the asymptomatic.

And did the 5th and 6th years while we were at it.

We should have tested the lecturers and the halls staff before the unis went back.

Sample tested the students moving into the halls.

Plus explained to our plooky youth that if you needed Freshers Week to get a social life then you are not ready for nickin’ aboot.

Tough love — that is what the youth of today need.

Plus exposure to leaded petrol to get the aggression levels up to the late 70’s / early 80’s.

That will reinforce the social distancing message.
