Monied leagues sweep all

219

It looks like Hibs will take 7,000 fans to Celtic Park for the Scottish Cup quarterfinal on Sunday, which will be the biggest travelling support to visit in many years.  It also equates to around half their average home supporter attendance; there is belief and commitment to the Hibernian cause, with good reason.

Bayern Munich’s progress to the Champions League quarterfinals looks assured after a 3-0 home win over Bayer Leverkusen last night.  The German league leaders relied on a last gasp equaliser at home to Celtic last month to reach this stage of the competition.

Four clubs from outside the big five leagues reached the last stage of the competition.  Each of them lost at home this midweek.  PSV Eindhoven take a 1-7 score to Arsenal on Wednesday.  We have our hard luck story in this season’s competition, but the reality is that the resources needed for a genuinely deep dive into the Champions League only exist in the monied leagues.

“Whats the CQN thoughts on reintroducing. ‘The bevvy’ at games?.

    for me a big NAW”

Not fussed either way. Guy beside me almost always sneaks in a wee bottle of buckie. This offends me far less than the many around smoking, vaping etc which gives me the dry boak at times when I am caught unawares and the wind blows the wrong way.

“I don’t see a mad rush from Celtic supporters to snap up the Hibs tickets.”

I’ve missed a few games recently due to lack of funds (company in admin so every penny is a prisoner atm) and one of the bus regulars has gifted me two free tickets for Hibs and says there are others on the bus not sold and plenty of seats available.

Will be good to be back at CP for the first time in what seems like way too long – has the makings of a proper game with Hibs hopefully confident and coming to play rather than just negate and also hopefully a good atmosphere with the numbers they are bringing.

The new UC League format has been a leveller in so many ways – the monied leagues Clubs playing against their peers before the knockout stage – yet with only two of the top eight failing to win away from home, and Leverkusen being one of them, ir does show the hierarchy has been shaken but not stirred.

Still Celtic played “five” teams from the monied leagues, six games.

Pld 6 Won 1 Drew 2 and Lost 3 shows the difficulty we faced.

However among our “peer group” we played four teams.

Pld 4 Won 2 Drew 2 Lost Nil

Shows the progress we have made. We made a great account of ourselves in the worlds top Club competition hitting all our objectives.

Can’t wait until next season, getting to the knock out stages will be a great again – maybe a bit luckier with the draw next season.

    Hail Hail

Qualifying for next years CL will be an achievement. We will play a peer group team and possibly better than any played in this years competition given the easy draw we enjoyed. Even our top league opponents from this year are having it tough domestically.

  6. Shakhtar and Kyiv playing in matches in Ukraine today. Both should win their games. Shakhtar seem to be gathering steam after 2 wins since resumption. Still a gap to close though. Kyiv drew their last game.

  7. Bevvy at games ?

I rarely drink outwith the stadium nowadays , never mind within .

A case in point is tomorrow when I’ll have to listen to the Shipbank Shipwrecks sober 🤪

  13. Friday 6th

There was no priest in last night or tonight. They stopped me from seeing my solicitor tonight, as another part of the isolation process, which, as time goes by, they will ruthlessly implement. I expect they may move me sooner than expected to an empty wing. I will be sorry to leave the boys, but I know the road is a hard one and everything must be conquered.

I have felt the loss of energy twice today, and I am feeling slightly weak.

They (the Screws) are unembarrassed by the enormous amount of food they are putting into the cell and I know they have every bean and chip counted or weighed. The damned fools don’t realise that the doctor does tests for traces of any food eaten. Regardless, I have no intention of sampling their tempting morsels.

I am sleeping well at night so far, as I avoid sleeping during the day. I am even having pleasant dreams and so far no headaches. Is that a tribute to my psychological frame of mind or will I pay for that tomorrow or later! I wonder how long I will be able to keep these scribbles going?

My friend Jennifer got twenty years. I am greatly distressed. (Twenty-one-year-old Jennifer McCann, from Belfast’s Twinbrook estate, was sentenced to twenty years’ imprisonment for shooting at an RUC man).

I have no doubts or regrets about what I am doing for I know what I have faced for eight years, and in particular for the last four and-a-half years, others will face, young lads and girls still at school, or young Gerard or Kevin (Bobby’s son and nephew, respectively) and thousands of others.

They will not criminalise us, rob us of our true identity, steal our individualism, depoliticise us, churn us out as systemised, institutionalised, decent law-abiding robots. Never will they label our liberation struggle as criminal.

I am (even after all the torture) amazed at British logic. Never in eight centuries have they succeeded in breaking the spirit of one man who refused to be broken. They have not dispirited, conquered, nor demoralised my people, nor will they ever.

I may be a sinner, but I stand — and if it so be, will die — happy knowing that I do not have to answer for what these people have done to our ancient nation.

Thomas Clarke is in my thoughts, and MacSwiney, Stagg, Gaughan, Thomas Ashe, McCaughey. Dear God, we have so many that another one to those knaves means nothing, or so they say, for some day they’ll pay.

When I am thinking of Clarke, I thought of the time I spent in ‘B’ wing in Crumlin Road jail in September and October ’77. I realised just what was facing me then. I’ve no need to record it all, some of my comrades experienced it too, so they know I have been thinking that some people (maybe many people) blame me for this hunger-strike, but I have tried everything possible to avert it short of surrender.

I pity those who say that, because they do not know the British and I feel more the pity for them because they don’t even know their poor selves. But didn’t we have people like that who sought to accuse Tone, Emmet, Pearse, Connolly, Mellowes: that unfortunate attitude is perennial also…

I can hear the curlew passing overhead. Such a lonely cell, such a lonely struggle. But, my friend, this road is well trod and he, whoever he was, who first passed this way, deserves the salute of the nation. I am but a mere follower and I must say Oíche Mhaith.

  14. BURNLEY78 @ 1:02 PM,

Totally agree, re: the UCL-Q challenge, it won’t be easy – the Champions route will be filled with their country’s Champions.

However, so was our UCL draw this season, which was anything but easy.

We managed to not only hold our own but we were unlucky not to beat Brugge, a bizarre own goal, and Dynamo Zargreb, the Crotian Champions playing for a draw.

So, nothing is guaranteed but we can go into the qualifiers quietly confident in the summer.

We showed against Aberdeen and St Mirren, even in our off days, we are a formidable opponent, who, like top teams do, win competition games with ease.

    For one I’m OpTIMistic….

    Join the Brendan revolution;)

  16. in a pure random encounter just now, I had the pleasure of meeting PAUL LYONS there walking round the corner from my house and with a pal.

I do not do any other form of social media, but it was just very good to actually talk to the chap and see him walking and healthy.

For anyone who doesnt know, the celtic supporting Glasgow Central historian, fell down ladders and broke his back some months ago.

He is back to work part time and had to suffer my daft observations about the Bishopton railway tunnel, the navvies who worked there and the bridge at west ferry.

    I probably came across as a fan-bhoy.

Anyways, and fittingingly when we have the Sands diaries.

What an indomitable spirit he is.

    keep it lit.

  17. Let’s not give up on the (relative) minnows yet, although the gist of what you are saying Paul is undisputable. Lille managed to buck the trend bagging a draw in Dortmund. Makes sense in a way though as France is a power in world football. Celtic had a good run in Europe and can build on it, our start of season is finally streamlined with the monied leagues after decades of pre, pre, qualifiers. Let’s just enjoy the next ride, we’ve won the cup before already!

    Saturday 2nd March 2019.

  21. The new format has definitely been a much needed change and improvement to a format that was some way past being stale.

The one thing I’d like to see change is the play off round after the groups – just go straight to last 16 and place the teams 17-24 into the europa league.

I’ve watched a lot of the europa league this season and I’ve no doubt that we’d be pushing for last 4 or better.

  22. The current champions league set up means teams like Celtic, Brugge, Feyenoord and PSVs for example can never realistically hope to win a European trophy while they win their league and get CL football. That shouldn’t be the case.

  23. See there is another warning regarding traffic for fans going to the game on Sunday, talk about redeveloping the main stand ,could our club afford to build a new stadium away from Parkhead area, there is plenty of land on the M74 motorway south or east near Daldowie .
