Mooy and Maeda master Hibs

178

After a shaky opening few minutes when Hibernian threatened to swamp Celtic, the champions took control and recorded their third and best win at Easter Road since a similar result nine years ago.  Aaron Mooy scored his first goal for Celtic, shortly before adding a second from the penalty spot, but his overall performance was deserving of the Man of the Match award.

With Josip Juranovic due to return to right back on Monday, Ange Postecoglou has a decision to make in central mid.  Callum McGregor will start, but Mooy, Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley will compete for the other two slots.  Mooy is normally stand-in, but he has made a case to start.

Daizen Maeda seems to have gained confidence in Qatar.  His return to domestic action has seen a lift in effectiveness.  The game was determined last night by two first half runs he made.  We were surprised when he was taken to the World Cup to play striker, with Kyogo left in Glasgow.  Having watched how important pressing is to Japan, their squad selection looks right.

Make no mistake, our rivals were hoping to see a chink in Celtic’s armour last night.  9 points is a commanding lead, one that can suffer a defeat and remain commanding.  Instead, the champions looked every inch that status.

  2. 1958…Gilmar, Didi, Nilton Santos, Garrincha, Vava and Pele. Those were the names that stuck out for me as a ten year old kid. Suddenly they were up there alongside my heroes Puskas, John Charles and wee Bobby Collins, who scored for Scotland in that same world cup against Paraguay. But Pele, perhaps because he was so young, became the flaming star of a team who didn’t so much kick the ball but seemed to stroke it around. It was football as I hadn’t seen before and it was sensational. The 1970 final was the pinnacle of a fabulous career. I had the good fortune to meet him in 1989 at Hampden before the start of the U-16 World Cup. As a person he came across as gracious, as a footballer he was simply, for me, the greatest of all time. May he rest in peace…

  5. I went to the 1982 World Cup in Spain. I was one of a convoy of Scots who took the train from Malaga to Seville on the day Scotland were to play Brazil.

When we arrived at our destination we couldn’t get out of the station as the exits were congested with Brazil fans. After much cajoling we finally managed to get outside and discovered what the issue was. The street was cordoned off with barriers and the Brazilians were lining the street five deep on both sides.

We asked what was happening and one said ” Pele – he is coming!” We stood in wait and ten minutes later a motorcade came into view. In the middle of this convoy, sticking out through a sunroof was Pele, holding aloft the World Cup! I think the Scots reacted more hysterically than the Brazilians – which amused them. But then, how many Scots have ever got to within 10 yards of the World Cup!

It was just a brief moment and then he was gone. And sadly, today, he has finally gone for good.

When he moved off the Brazilians asked us for a match prediction. Typically, we Scots were holding up fingers suggesting that we would win by two or three. They seemed concerned at our confidence. Unfortunately, this was loosely based on alcohol intake and the fact that we’d just put five past New Zealand. Not much to go on as it turned out – David Narey’s toepoke apart!

Never having seen Pele play I’m always re!uctant to get into the whole GOAT debate. I think its very difficult to compare players of different generations. I don’t think anyone would ever discount him though.

RIP Pele – a true legend of the game.

  10. *SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2022-23*

    RESULTS FROM GAME #27 – HIBS 0 CELTIC 4 (MOOY(2), MAEDA, KYOGO)

Good morning, friends and a Big Happy Friday to you all!

2 consecutive games where we score 4 times suggests that we are in just the right vein of form to kick off 2023 in style. And yet the first 10-15 minutes suggested to me that it was more likely to be a high scoring but tight encounter. But once Aaron Mooy took control of that midfield the result was never in doubt. 4 really good goals (I include the penalty in that!) and another 3 or 4 ‘how did that not go in’ chances made for very enjoyable viewing. Bizarre moment of the evening was whilst the game was goalless and Hatate decided to take a long throw into the box. Our box! Bizarre comment of the night though was provided by Andy Walker after Hibs scored a clearly offside early goal. The linesman flagged and the referee agreed and so in pre-VAR days that’d have been that. So for Andy to then say “ Well, VAR got that one right” a few seconds after play restarted was a real D’oh moment!

Domestically we have now played 21, winning 20 and losing just 1. We have scored 69 and conceded 15.

Thanks to the 82 who emailed me with their 3 nominations.

Very exciting voting for last night’s game with 2 players each getting over 95% of the nominations. But there can only be one winner. So, the total votes cast for each player with my own choices asterisked are as follows –

    Hart: 0

    Hatate: 17

    Carter-Vickers*: 3

    Starfelt: 37

    Taylor: 2

    McGregor: 23

    O’Riley: 0

    Mooy*: 79

    Abada: 0

    Kyogo: 6

    Maeda*: 75

    Forrest: 0

    Giakoumakis: 0

    Bernabei: 1

    Jota: 0

    Vata: 0

And so the players receiving POINTS for the game against Hibs are –

    Mooy – 5 pts

    Maeda – 4 pts

    Starfelt – 3 pts

    McGregor – 2 pts

    Hatate – 1 pt

And after 27 games the overall standings are as shown below –

    58 points – Hatate

    38 points – Taylor

    36 points – Carter-Vickers

    34 points – Jota

    28 points – McGregor and O’Riley

23 points – Abada and Mooy

    22 points – Jenz

    20 points – Kyogo

    15 points – Haksabanovic

    13 points – Giakoumakis

12 points – Juranovic and Starfelt

    10 points – Ralston

9 points – Bernabei and Welsh

    8 points – Forrest

    7 points – Maeda

    5 points – Turnbull

    4 points – Hart

0 points – Abildgaard, McCarthy and Siegrist

*Player Of The Month for December*

There were only 4 fixtures played during December, all of them in the league. A reminder that the Player Of The Month award is based purely on the TOTAL votes given to each player during that month’s games.

The winners for the earlier months of this season were Jota (August), Hatate (September and October) and O’Riley (November).

For December, in 3rd place with a total of 97 is Aaron Mooy. Runner up with 98 votes is Liel Abada. And the Player Of The Month for December 2022 with 103 votes is Calum McGregor.

We now have the weekend to enjoy before our next league encounter, a 12.30pm kick off on Monday for our trip to the home of Triggers Broom FC. Just like every other league game there are only 3 points at stake. And also, just like every other game, our best performing player will get 5 points. But given that we are playing our closest rivals the game gives Celtic the chance to open up a 12 point gap at the top of the table.

The voting arrangements should be back to normal for that one – vote by 10.00pm on Tuesday evening and the results should be out shortly after that.

    Hail Hail!

PELE’s FANTASTIC DUMMY of the Uraguan Goalie…..

One of the TV ‘s ” EXPERT PUNDITS” was the complete IDIOT…” JIMMY HILL”.

Whilst the vast majority of folk described PELE’s Dummy as being BRILLIANT, FANTASTIC etc….

” JIMMY HILL”…..Claimed that ” PELE had BOTTLED IT from the Goalie” !

What a CHUMP Jimmy Hill was.

Iv often wondered what Jimmy Hill would have said IF it had been an ENGLISH Player who had ” DUMMIED” the Goalie ?

It was FANTASTIC Quick Thinking by PELE, who sadly put the ball just past the Post after going around the Goalie….What a Goal it would have been.

The next day at School in Glesgas East End….we were ALL saying ” How Brilliant is was from PELE”.

None of us Teenagers had EVER seen a Player ” DUMMY” any Goalie before…SHEER BRILLIANCE from the Great Man.

    R.I.P. PELE.

The English Pundits on TV and their Media in general were full of praise for 2 Bobby Moore” during that game and for his remaining years….

What they NEVER MENTION….is their precious Bobby, being NUTMEGGED by a Brazilian Player in the Build Up to the Goal

I cant remember who the Brazilian Player was that took the Piss outta ” Bobby”…maybe ” TOSTAO” ?

I never really rated Bobby Moore, I thought he was very OVER RATED…IMHO.

  21. The ONLY English Players that I rated as a young man from 1966 and 1970, were Bobby Charlton and Gordon Banks…their Goalie

The English Queen gave Geoff Hurst a Feckin KNIGHTHOOD for scoring TWO Goals in the 1966 world Cup Final !

Apart from Bobby Charlton and Gordon Banks…the English World Cup team of 1966 and 1970, were ALL pretty AVERAGE Players imho.

Apart from those Two…. Bobby Charlton ( SUPERB Player)…and Gordon Banks ( SUPERB Goalie).
