Morals and hypocrisy, McCoist nails it, then asks you to bend over

1156

Do you remember the early days of Celtic Quick News when one wit suggested this was a blog for accountants?  Our early years did a great deal to bring a wider understanding of accounts and finance to Celtic fans – which was a good thing.

Today your fan of Scottish football needs to know about more than the game and amortisation, a semester or two in law school is an enormous advantage.  We touch on legal matters here but last night I enjoyed reading the forensic analysis on the wonderful Duff and Phelps on the Web 3D Law blog.  It’s worth 10 minutes of your day, each day, the most recent blog especially.  I also assume you are all keeping an eye on the substantial thoughts on Paul McConville’s blog.  If not, I want to know why.

So much for accounts and the law, today I want to discuss philosophy with you.

When football-types talk about morality and hypocrisy they are usually worth listening to, if only for comedic value.  Anyone experiencing the Scottish media will not doubt that morality is subjective and chameleon in nature.  This question has exercised great minds for centuries, if only they had the benefit of our effervescent radio luminaries.
Despite being metaphorically surrounded by morally opportunistic hypocrites, Ally McCoist felt so secure in his demands for Rangers that he didn’t dodge the issue yesterday.

When asked if Rangers should be kicked out of the SPL he accepted it “might be the right thing to do morally and people will have their own opinions on it, with differences far and varied.

“There’s an argument the right thing to do is for Rangers to go down to the Third Division and that might be the case if it’s a Newco after liquidation.

“But is it the correct thing to do for Scottish football?  Probably not. Everybody’s got a dilemma and that’s why there are so many opinions on it.

“Whether people like it or not, Rangers and Celtic are different because of the size and magnitude of the two clubs.

“Supporters of other clubs and some Old Firm supporters say you can’t have rules for some clubs and not for others.

“In an ideal world, that would be 100 per cent correct. I would absolutely and totally agree with that.

“But the fact of the matter is we’re asking if it would be good for the rest of the SPL if Rangers went down to the Third Division? The answer has to be no.

“I don’t envy the people who have to make that decision. I can understand the hypocrisy of it but Rangers and Celtic are different.”

Rangers are different – no dispute about that, Ally.  Celtic are different again, but if it is hypocritical and morally wrong to provide support for these clubs which has never been extended to a smaller club, we cannot subvert our sport – and remember, the word SPORT implies that outcomes are determined on a level playing field – Rangers must be treated no differently than Gretna.

And just one correction for Ally: liquidation-and-phoenix would not see Rangers drop to the Third Division.  A Newco in the Third Division would not have dropped from anywhere, it would be a new company and new football team.  Rangers would, in these circumstances, go pop!

One* team in Glasgow,
There’s only one team in Glasgow.
One team in Glasgow,
There’s only one team in Glasgow.

Pop!  And they’re gone!

Aye,I was there for that one too.

Two down at HT,and then the rumours came through that Dundee were beating Dndee Utd.

    It was a lie,of course.

I had been at Celtic Park on the Wednesday to see us lose the game, amd probably the league, thanks to a late toe-poke from David Narey

To win 4-2 from two goals down FOR NOTHING was just one last boot in the baws.

    We had some team then,btw.

    Celtic just win

Someone – make sure McCulloch has a REAL reason to write around on the floor (hopefully someone does him in the 2nd minute to avoid a red card)

Make Sure Aluko is stopped and they have nothing but the long ball.

Play our game but please make sure McCulloch has a reason to fell pain in his legs other than avoiding a red card for himself.

My money is on that diddy Whittaker getting a red card as well.

    Mon the hoops.

I can’t agree mate. I’m doing a lot of work with my class just now based on a book called Divivded City which deals with sectarianism and racism in Glasgow.

Last week we ended up discussing the possible demise of the huns and many of the weans were ribbing me that I would miss the games (we always say a wee extra prayer on Friday on the weekend of a derby game!).

I had to tell them that I genuinely wouldn’t. Mostly I don’t get too upset while at the games these days but they do still bring out the worst in me. I don’t like feeling that way and I look forward to the day that I won’t.

    Funny.

Not so funny was the Dallas game at CP.

I’ve never experienced anything quite like it.

    And hopefully never will.

My abiding memory is the guy falling from the top deck in the north stand.

The penalty was at the Celtic end wasnt it?. Think Lennox scored 2 that night. Is there anyway of checking it?

  8. Hello Hoops.

Had to climb a mountain in Wales this afternoon. Somebody had to do it.

Anyway, I have a really big football question to ask and I hope all the visionary people who post here about tactics and football strategy will give me an answer. I respect their opinions.

As most CQN people know, I am a big fan of Spanish football. I confess to having seen nothing of Bayern Munich this season until Wednesday’s game against Real Madrid. I was blown away. And to think they are not the champions of Germany. Wow.

I loved Mario Gómez. I have never seen him play like that. What a performance. What a performance, too, from Bastian Schweinsteiger. We had already seen his transition from wide attacking midfielder to deeper, meneur du jeu during the World Cup in 2010. On Wednesday night you would never have known he hadn’t played that role for 20 years. A masterclass.

The player that really caught my eye, though, was Toni Kroos. My goodness. This is a Jock-Stein-kills-catenaccio moment for me. What a performance. Absolutely unbelievable.

A few times, when Celtic were playing a very flat formation with two banks of four in midfield and defence, with whatever strikers we had lending a hand to defend from the front, we have seen guys like Neil Lennon and Scott Brown as our most advanced player. But we knew they didn’t really belong there, that they didn’t really mean it. In Toni Kroos, that role seems to me to have a new definition for a new type of football. He was often the most advanced, but it was totally deliberate and he absolutely meant it.

Real Madrid’s central two of Xabi Alonso and Khedira hardly kicked a ball. Toni Kroos was so quick to cover the ground, to anticipate where the ball was going and to block the passes that Real Madrid simply couldn’t establish the possession patterns they are used to. It was amazing.

Next night, we had Athletic Bilbao against Sporting Lisbon. I loved that game too. And in the Toni Kroos role for Bilbao we had the magnificent Iker Muniain, still only a boy. Wow.

Defending from the front à la Henrik Larsson is gone. It’s a new dawn. Teams can have guys like Mario Gómez or Fernando Llorente as a main point of attack, but the role of being the first point of defence by defending as far up the field as possible is not theirs. It belongs to a dedicated midfielder, Kroos or Muniain in the case of these teams. Wow. Amazing stuff.

Is anyone in England doing this? Is anyone in France?

If Celtic are to do it, I think we need to make a signing and spend proper money on it. If we are to try to do it from within, I’m not sure who would be the best Celtic player to take up the role. It needs to be someone amazingly athletic, but also someone who is a great footballer and knows when the ball is there to be won back and what to do with it when we have it back. I’ve seen the first team and the U19s this season and I’m not entirely sure I’ve seen any ideal candidates.

I think I have seen a player in Scotland who could do it, who could emulate Toni Kroos and Iker Muniain. It’s Johnny Russell. He would need a lot of coaching, but he could do it.

I bet lots of teams in Euro 2012 try to do this. I bet the Republic of Ireland (hélas) and England are not two of them.

The game is a living thing. It changes. All thoughts welcome.

  9. ParkheadcumsalfordwhoisNeilLennonand PaulMcBrideandTrishGodman

As would I, but I will miss the games, I have been watching them for nearly 50 years.

I suppose when next season comes around and they are not there, I will have forgotten about them.

I want them gone, of course I do, but just being honest, it will be very different without them, better but different.

  10. Thommos goal was maybe ten minutes from end just seemed later

(remember commenting later watching utube I thought that was last couple of minutes)

It was just that we were expecting to win and it wasnt looking like happening as a under strength hun mob looked like holding out.

Sutton was last minute or injury time just as hello hello broke out

    whitewash 03/04

My favourite ….every single one of them

From the first I saw(live) shuggy Edvaldson LC final

1978 to last I was present at Ledley at Christmas

Everyone whether a Graveson tap in or Naka Maloney or Nicholas new year at the pox (think was our first neerday win at Ipox since the 30’s)

was special and hope to add a few more tomorrow.

I remember watching one of those games at the time and there was a point in the game when Arteta threw a punch at at Peasron and completely missed, I never heard anyone comment on it, can anyone recall?

I honestly don’t know how it will be without them, I want them consigned to the history books, their hate and bile has no place on god’s earth.

When we lose to them, it’s a feeling I do not like, and for that alone it will be worth it, the feeling when we win is good, but the feeling is not as good as the bad one is bad, if that makes sence.

Agree the Glasgow derby brings out the worst in us.

But the buzz when we score and win is undeniable.

However for the greater good we will need to sacrifice that.

  18. Third goal against them in the 69 cup final, my fav game against them, same 4-0 tomorrow would be great. Megrahi asking if they’re dead yet. Up the Celts

  19. Celtic first

I watched the game the other night, but toni Kroos didn’t really catch my eye, but , it seems like an interesting tactic.

One that you may be interested in was big Dolph in a Sweden jersey. He often played as the most forward midfielder, and I am sure that when he scored against Engerland , just before we signed him, he played in that position.

I think the logic was that by having a big aggressive guy as the most forward midfielder, it prevented Euro teams playing from the back …think about most Euro teams where the most forward midfielder is a smallish guy who offers little resistance. By having big Dolph as the most forward midfielder, the opposition goalkeeper was forced to kick the ball, which in turn was met by Patrick Anderson or another of the Swedish defenders.

Very clever tactic, and a great example of how teamwork, committment and a gameplan could beat a team of superior players.

I was the midweek game against utd, correct me if i’m wrong. did we lose 3-2 after leading 2-1?

I remember we beat them 2-0 a few weeks before at CP, as I was in Valkenburg in Holland with the school and me and my big mate absconded to the town at around 10 oclock at night to find a phone box to phone home for the result. When we got back there were teachers and cops everywhere, and they had the cheek to try and ground us.
