More cunning than Tiger Woods at a cocktail bar

429

I’ve been meaning to speak to you about this for a while; thought I would wait until the new season, see if anything changed, maybe we could avoid having the chat.

There are different ways of watching football games.  There’s the way we watch World Cup games, as unpartisan observers, which is completely different to the way we watch Celtic games.  If I’m watching a game in the English lower leagues with a one-time Celtic target, I’ll watch him closely, usually paying scant regard to anyone else.  The same is true if I’m watching the likes of Wigan with Sean Maloney.

When I watch a game before writing a match report I often get a different perspective.  The game flows in the normal manner but I then have to look at my notes and compose a report.  It’s the notes that are often unexpected, they tell a story of incidents, not of what is essentially a pursuit which flows for 90 minutes.  For Celtic, the incidents overwhelmingly, often as much as 80% of the time, involve one player.

He’s not the quickest, the most industrious, or the strongest, but Kris Commons makes things happen at a level no one else at Celtic comes close to.  The evidence screams out at me every time I check my notes.

I’m sure Celtic will recognise this with a new contract but there’s reason to worry about this now.  What if he’s injured, what if opponents figure out they better stop supply to him, what if his form shades, as it did two years ago?

I like the look of the squad.  Lustig, Matthews, Izaguirre, Ambrose, Brown, Mulgrew, Johansen, Forrest, Biton, Stokes, Griffiths, Forster and van Dijk offer consistent standards of performance, most look comfortable in Champions League football, but the dependence on one creative talent feels like an unnecessary vulnerability.

As I said, football is not an incident-dependent sport, like golf, it is a flowing pursuit which requires industry, concentration and strategy, without which, the creatives would end up playing lower league football.  But to win games, you need someone to invoke six of seven incidents more cunning than Tiger Woods at a cocktail bar*.

*Kris Commons behaviour at cocktail bars is impeccable, he is capable of on-field cunning only.

Slightly different from training to succeed, I know many talk on here that Kris Commons appears to carry some weight.

Was really surprised at how Lean he actually is, when you see him off the park

IMO, Kris has been playing at his optimum for the last year or more, he has been fantastic. I just don’t think he is good enough to perform against the last 16 of CL teams, he then becomes a luxury that can’t be afforded. This is not a criticism, and I hope he gets a new contract, just like I felt Sammi should have been offered one – I, most of all, hope he makes me eat my words.

There is a lot more to things than anyone can realise. I knew Sammi was an amazing role model, for the younger players around him, I also know the Commons Couple have proper Hearts of Gold.

These types of players are Priceless.

    Good Evening,

As we approach the new season, I thought I might break an almost ten year old habit and delve back into a past life and proffer an opinion on matters legal.

I become increasingly concerned about the role and the practice of the police forces and Government in this country ( UK and Scotland ) and may well seek to examine certain matters close to home in the coming weeks.

However, events of earlier this week and last prompted me to pick up my pen so to speak and I have now published the fruits of my labours — although not much labour was involved if i am honest.

This is a long piece and it almost takes me back to a past life.

It would not be suitable for the CQN magazine and is far too long in any event.

Here I vent my spleen regarding events that bothered me greatly decades ago and played a big part on certain decisions that were made back then.

I believe that these events have suddenly become relevant again given current news reports — not that they had ever lost any relevance in the first place.

I am aware that this will take some reading, but hopefully it is written in storybook style and is easy reading as the truth is not widely known and has been wrongly misrepresented for some time.

To explain everything has taken some 20,000 words and at that I have still left out some explanatory information, potential theories and some conclusions.

I appreciate it will not be of interest to all, but will undoubtedly attract the attention of some.

Oh, tax avoidance , morally repugnant.

Agree with that, not fully on Sammi though :-)

It will be interesting to see what Kris may be offered to stay.

I believe he is in the top earners bracket (as was Sammi and Joe. L) so what do we do ?

Incidentally I also believe we should be living within our means as a club.

Not referring to Kris C here, but think we should be getting better for what we do actually spend in quite a few cases

This forum is, to me, depressing nowadays. Not to tar eveyone with the same bush, but, among some of the adjectives that spring to mind in describing the flavour of much of what is written are the following: Sycophantic. Conservative. Dellusional. Cliquey. Bigoted. Obsessive. Superior. Ignorant. Self-congratulatory.

I’m not perfect myself myself of course. It’s just an opinion in a moment of clarity. Feel free to bomb my beach in defence.

  18. Maybe I’m being a bit too judgemental but I feel that, according to one or two of his team mates, Tony Watt’s problem is that he thinks he knows it all is and is incapable of listening to anyone who tells him different!

I remember his ‘What the hell is a football star like me doing here?’ performance when the Thai Tims played for the Celtic team.

He has all the ability in the world but will RD be able to advise him of his many deficiencies and, more importantly, will he capable of taking this on board?

I genuinely hope so because he could well become a Celtic great!

So sorry at the loss of your mum. Most of us probably suffer that loss, although my wee mum was 94. So many people lose a mum or dad at a very early age, and my heart goes out to them who don’t have the privilege of experiencing their parents growing old. This is a wonderful experience for the parents and children alike. We have been so lucky in that respect. Hope this makes sense. KTF
