More quality combatants instead of Kolos

412

As Brendan Rodgers mulls over additions to his coaching staff, one possibility, Kolo Toure, has taken a position with the Ivorian Olympic team.

Kolo’s role at the club in the early part of last season, when he steadied a shaky defence sufficiently to see us through the Champions League qualifiers, could be reprised this season. Due to injuries, we’re short in central defence, while running with only two strikers until January (at least) seems tight. A Kolo-type figure may help both positions.

Scratch deep enough, however, and it gets more complicated. Kolo did well at the start of last season but was soon erring consistently, before being retired by omission. This was someone playing at the top of the game the season before.

Bringing in another experienced addition to the squad to patch gaps in defence or attack works on paper when you look at Kolo’s early work, but there are significant downside risks. The match fitness of anyone out of contract right now is unlikely to make them suitable to undertake hugely important games in the coming weeks.

Then there is the question of attitude – Philippe Senderos once looked like a good idea, but Phil took a red card instead of jumping for a ball, when his team needed him most. The small matter of money also has to be considered: Kolo was paid a fortune for his time in Glasgow; straight from the football budget.

Opportunity cost is another issue. Kris Ajer will not see a great deal of first team action this season, but his development would be hampered more with a 35-year-old team-mate on £35k per week as first reserve. And surely we hope to promote a striker through the ranks?

The final issue to consider is what will happen to the squad in the final week of the month, if Champions League qualification is secured and the transfer window gets into full swing. We were scourged for so long by squad fillers.

Sign quality combatants, able to last a season in the first time and with years of development ahead. This is where strategy has to be.

  1. Season 2002/03 and the ordering offs v Rangers got a mention on KDS.

Being the geek that I am I had some spreadsheet info that with the perspective of history tells us something just wasn’t right. apart from De Boer and Moore’s contribution that season. Have a swatch.

For my spreadsheet sins I kept tabs. It was bloody obvious the refs were making sure they were kept in the title hunt in 2003 along with another bite at the CL cherry that kept them “competitive” v Celtic.

Rangers finished 11 games against 10 men taking full points in all games bar one v Aberdeen which they drew at Pittodrie. They were awarded 11 penalties and scored 8 including the 1 from THREE v Dundee. In contrast Celtic never had a player ordered off against them that season and were awarded 8 penalties scoring from 7.

Rangers scored 18 goals against Dunfermline that season and in a 3-2 victory against Celtic both De Boer and Moore, recipients of unlawful DOS ebts that also had side letters scored. Both played regularly during that season with unlawful ebts and side letters whose existence Rangers denied to HMRC in April 2005.

All covered up by the SFA where dishonesty under Art 5.1 Obligations to Members by failing to

    (a) observe the principles of loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship in accordance with the rules of

    fair play

    (f) behave towards the Scottish FA and other members with the utmost good faith. were never at any time in the Judicial Panel that sanctioned Craig Whyte or LNS who proclaimed no question of dishonesty despite no evidence of it being presented because it was not in his Terms of Reference in the first place.

    Check BRTH’s argument on SFM

Whether the CQN podcast folk have a case or got tactics right/wrong on what is only one part of a larger jigsaw, should not stop us focusing on the big picture that the SFA are trying hard not to be examined which is on titles and trophies won whilst Rangers were in breach of Article 5.1

That is where a JR has best chance of success i.e. that the SFA were one or all of the four Ds viz: Delinquent, Dishonest Deceitful and Disingenuous when it came to investigating similar behaviour by a member club against fellow members.

  10. Back in the late ’80s,Bob Mills was compering at the Comedy Store in London. I’d gone along to see a new young guy building a reputation called Lee Evans. He stood out a mile from the others on the bill, some of whom were being cruelly heckled by a couple of loudmouths in the audience.

After one guy had suffered particularly badly, Mills came on and asked the hecklers where they were from.

    “Liverpool! Why?”.

    “Here’s a tenner, go buy yourselves a f*^*^*g house!”

    Comeback there came none.

Lee Evans was hilarious, by the way. . . Young and hungry back then.

  17. AULDHEID @ 8:46 PM,

Good Post… well worth keeping these stats.

Once had a wee lookey @ Barry Ferguson’s Disciplinary record; At Rangers first time round at Blackburn Rovers and his return.

Will not surprised you to know that Barry was on the “strenuous” side but a consummate professional in Scotland and a durty wee Bazza in England.

Now some may point to the difference in Referee tolerance… well you must remember in those days the “British” game was played in England and it was pretty industrial.

Anyways, even that would not excuse the large anomalies.

    These are all pointers.

As far as the 2002/3 Season goes, if CQN are to be believed and their evidence can point to Match Rigging – then with the Illegal Tax Scam and illicit payments and side letters and Financial Doping (BoS) all going on that Season.

How can the SFA allow their Treble Trophies to Stand. That Season may give us the leverage to ensure we prise open this lid.

That is where a JR has best chance of success i.e. that the SFA were one or all of the four Ds viz: Delinquent, Dishonest Deceitful and Disingenuous when it came to investigating similar behaviour by a member club against fellow members.

Well personally I’d love this to be the case but I think it would be a huge ask proving Dishonesty and Deceit. The CoS I’d imagine would expect a very high standard of indisputable evidence.

Highlighting the SFA’S failure to carry out their Duties due to error or incompetence would be the best we would get, throwing in Mr Heavily Conflicted, without necessarily suggesting wrong doing could be an additional route.
