More quality combatants instead of Kolos

412

As Brendan Rodgers mulls over additions to his coaching staff, one possibility, Kolo Toure, has taken a position with the Ivorian Olympic team.

Kolo’s role at the club in the early part of last season, when he steadied a shaky defence sufficiently to see us through the Champions League qualifiers, could be reprised this season. Due to injuries, we’re short in central defence, while running with only two strikers until January (at least) seems tight. A Kolo-type figure may help both positions.

Scratch deep enough, however, and it gets more complicated. Kolo did well at the start of last season but was soon erring consistently, before being retired by omission. This was someone playing at the top of the game the season before.

Bringing in another experienced addition to the squad to patch gaps in defence or attack works on paper when you look at Kolo’s early work, but there are significant downside risks. The match fitness of anyone out of contract right now is unlikely to make them suitable to undertake hugely important games in the coming weeks.

Then there is the question of attitude – Philippe Senderos once looked like a good idea, but Phil took a red card instead of jumping for a ball, when his team needed him most. The small matter of money also has to be considered: Kolo was paid a fortune for his time in Glasgow; straight from the football budget.

Opportunity cost is another issue. Kris Ajer will not see a great deal of first team action this season, but his development would be hampered more with a 35-year-old team-mate on £35k per week as first reserve. And surely we hope to promote a striker through the ranks?

The final issue to consider is what will happen to the squad in the final week of the month, if Champions League qualification is secured and the transfer window gets into full swing. We were scourged for so long by squad fillers.

Sign quality combatants, able to last a season in the first time and with years of development ahead. This is where strategy has to be.

  3. Night all, just wanted to finish by saying how pleased I am that Shaun Maloney is back at Paradise, however not as pleased as seeing big Roy back.

Hugely under-rated as a player, great captain and leader and lovely guy as well.

    Welcome home Roy.

  5. Hibs and Aberdeen look to have assembled decent squads. I don’t know enough about the Sevco new chaps – dorrans might be an improvement on what was there, Jack never impressed me at Aberdeen and solves practically anyone they got was going to be an improvement on their centre halves – so I think it is too close to call 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the league. I’d go with Dons for second and hope hibs can be consistent enough to finish 3rd. Watched last half hour of Sevco on Sunday and didn’t see much to worry anyone in the top half of the league.

I don’t think we’ll go unbeaten again but I’ve been wrong many times before.

This documentary is a great start and a good platform to bring to a wider audience the corruption and complicity at the heart of the Rangers/David Murray scandals. Paul Larkin deserves to be commended. Not necessarily all is new in this vid, but it will engage a wider number to discuss and take action. Too many have got away with crimes in this.

I hope Stuart Armstrong stays. I’ll admit that i’ll be gutted if he goes. Remember, he was our new future Celtic Captain before any mention of Kieran Tierney. But if he doesn’t; we shrug our shoulders, heave a heavy sigh, and move on.

Celtic coach John Kennedy admits the Parkhead club will have to be patient in their pursuit of Patrick Roberts.

The 20-year-old played a key role in the Scottish champions’ undefeated campaign last year, scoring nine goals on their way to claiming the treble.

Roberts’ form had attracted interest from Southampton and free-spending Nice, however the French club killed off their interest in the player, instead moving swiftly to snare Monaco star Allan Saint-Maximin.

Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers has been persistent on Roberts throughout the summer – admitting he has a desire to re-sign the midfielder – and it is believed they have moved ahead of the pack with Celtic Park his preferred location.

But Kennedy confessed Celtic will just have to keep their fingers crossed and remain patient while City weigh up their proposal.

‘We just have to be patient on it,’ he said. ‘We’ve made them aware that Patrick had a fantastic time here and there is a lot of admiration for him from our end.

‘But Manchester City have him under contract and Patrick has to be involved in that decision as well.

‘We just have to be patient and see if something materialises, but at the moment nothing is really happening on it.’
