More wingers mitigate Celtic risk

314

Having signed two wingers in season 2022-23 (Jota – on a permanent contract, Haksabanovic) and four in season 2023-24 (Palma, Kuhn, Yang, Tilio), Celtic cut back on their most persistent transfer fix and limited the arrival of wingers to Jota during the season just finished.

We are again reported to be in the market for a winger; there are reasons.  Jota is out injured until the end of the year, Daizen Maeda has two years left on his contract, which he has so far declined to extend.  While Nicolas Kuhn will attract more attention than anyone else in the squad, in particular from his native Germany.

With Kuhn and Maeda under contract, Celtic have a degree of control ahead of the Champions League qualifiers in August, but that is not complete control.  Players who are attracting attention seldom perform at their best near deadline day.  Even if we resolve to keep both players for the season ahead, at this stage of the summer, there is reasons to be concerned about how focussed parts of the squad will be in August.

More wingers is one way to mitigate the risk.

I beg your indulgence on this one, scroll by if you’re uninterested.

A big celtic and family day for me today. My dad passed a few years ago and we could never find his Celtic share certificate. I wanted it to ensure someone in the family was able to use it. Anyway after many months and lots of back and forwards by letter with Computershare I got a copy. Then registered the death and eventually got them transferred to my name. I’m now a shareholder and can pass them to my sons. So a big day for me.

Fyi, the charges for this process were ridiculous. It cost me more than the shares are worth in the end. However it was worth it for the sentimental value.

    Shareholders meeting here I come!!

  2. A lot of Liverpool fans were unhappy with the owners last Summer for only signing a back up keeper who went out on loan and a reserve forward and making money in the window, and we all know how badly that turned out.

  3. If there are 3 positions to be in – strength, weakness and whatever the other one is, surely being in a position of strength is the one where strengthening is least necessary?

  4. ST STIVES Looking at the drone video on YouTube around Celtic Park, to me it looks if has seen better days ,and what was them Cranes hoisting up at both ends of the Lisbon lions ends,I couldn’t make out one of the workman when asked about what they were doing.

    Hope you are well.

I think the company who have the contract for Celtic Park also have the contract for Hearts.

That was last year. Might have changed.

  7. there was a good interview with someone at the liverpool training centre.

he hifghlighted that the manager told them no new signings last summer as he believed the players he had were good enough to do something that season, proved correct.

    and then,

that the incoming players had expressed to their clubs that they wanted moves to liverpool. no one else.

  8. heard today, tow rows of seats behiind the dugout have been removed, and season book holders contacted to change their seats, my opinion, that is a very naughty way to treat customers.

poor show, should have been contacted when renewals were open.

Celtic Park WiFi won a prestigious UK award in 2014

We were one of the first clubs in the UK to have full-stadium WiFi networks with a dedicated matchday entertainment app.

Mobile phone masts don’t transmit WiFi.

Its not celtic’s job to be moral crusaders in the world. No way should be refuse to play anyone in footballing compitition. Uefa should already have expelled teams from Israel from participating in european football tournaments.

  15. the long wait is over on

Celtic are a Plc – like it or not.

The Board are answerable to the shareholders – like it or not.

That responsibility will mean no Celtic board will refuse to play an Israeli team , nor withdraw

from a tournament involving one , at least not without a Special Resolution passed at an EGM.

Dermot Desmond, let alone any other major shareholder , will never IMO vote for such a resolution.

That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t vote for Israeli teams to be barred from the CL , as Russian teams were , but expecting anything more than that is unrealistic.

I wish in many ways that weren’t so but it is.

As someone pointed out earlier , to make things worse, we’d just be playing straight into the Huns hands.

  17. Word is that the new Hun Manager has been watching the Scottish cup final recording on a loop.

Which means that Celtic’s Management are not learning any lessons.

If the Huns park a bus in front of their goals like Aberdeen did, then wingers are not the answer.

Walter Smith parked the bus for 9 years and how many Manager’s did we go through who simply refused to change their tune?

Super Joe Miller was bought as a prolific striker from Aberdeen.

Super Joe was played as a winger who was expected to dribble round a parked bus….before long he was ready to chuck his jersey at the ‘unlistening’ Manager as we lost yet another Cup game to Aberdeen and their big new bus on the goal line.

Stuart Slater was made to look like Mickey Johnston.

Tommy Coyne had Adam Idah written all over his face.

John Collins covered for a million sins in the team until he went to the CL Semi Final with Monaco and Celtic still haven’t reached that level 30 years of ‘Celtic Way’ Managers later.

Wingers have been pish since Bobby Petta left the stage!

Next season the streetwise Livi team will show us how stupid we are to rely on wingers!

If teams watch celtic vs aberdeen in the cup final on a loop they will realise that only the width of the bar, post, a complete sitter missed and a blunder allowed aberdeen to win. That is a lot of things going wrong in one game for celtic.poor results happen.

One of the best ways to breakdown an altra low block is employing wingers who can go inside and outside. Helps if they have an attacking central midfielders to fed them in and to chip in with goals and assists.

We clearly need a good quality attacking midfielder to rotate/ share the load with hatate. Khun and diazan are very good with lots of pace but neither are particularly tricky or creative when low blocks is employed in wide areas.

We have upgraded the leftback position and: If rumours are to be believed we have solidified the gk position with a younger no.3, we are trying to bring in a highly rated young centre forward to act as no. 3 forward and we are trying to add an attacking centremid who can play right and left wing.

We will need another forward or winger depending on where diazen is played. We will need another leftback as well.

That’s 6 players needed before replacing 1st team players who wish to leave and the large list of players who appear to have no future at celtic.

It looks a lot but far from impossible.

Stephen, I don’t know if giving Brendan a huge bounty to spend in the next window is a good idea. For example, £11 million midfield player was invisible in the SCF, marked out of the game by Aberdeen level players, (Barry Ferguson’s players as well), and we had 4 wingers during the course of 130 minutes without any Managerial variation for the 2 sub wingers, who replaced another 2 wingers and you could count on one hand how many balls were crossed into the box by FOUR wingers for our exasperated ONE striker in a period of almost 130 minutes with players like Hamsters on wheels, and Brendan on the touch line clapping them to “Keep running – Run Faster” which obviously didn’t work.

Brendan in his first spell as manager famously said “We have millions of wingers” or something like that.

What are the players learning from this Groundhog day, EVERY day is the same?

Scott Brown as Ayr United Manager has the look of someone who learned Zero in over Ten years at Celtic.

But if a team wises up and puts their kitchen sink onto the goal line, we are done!

A Manager who seems to be incapable of getting over himself, won’t solve any of that.

Something that I have always wondered about.

What kind of career would John Colquhoun have had at Celtic if, we had a Tony Mowbray style of Managerial tactics like he had at Hibs were he virtually parked the bus on the goal line, and played a quick ball over the top to Hibs winger, Ivan Sproule, only with us using John Colquhoun in that way?

John Colquhoun could have been Legend material, so too would Tony Mowbray.

Tony Mowbray on his first media interview, as Celtic Manager, let it be known that he would FAIL as our Manager, because he dropped the Tony Mowbray way, and played the ‘fabled’ Celtic way = Doomed!

Why couldn’t BTM just say “Tonight I’m going to be – Tony Mowbray”??

The Celtic way is a curse that has to be ditched!

The Outstanding Wullie Maley song, has to be ditched!

This song has brainwashed 4 decades of Celtic fans, Managers, and Players.

TWMS must have been Walter Smith era Huns favourite song.
