More worrying than the result

897

I know we had nothing up front, but Odsonne Edouard has looked more of a passenger in some games this season than Patryk Klimala and Moi Elyounoussi this afternoon.  The game was lost elsewhere.

Newco’s shape allowed them to dominate space whenever we had possession.  They were able to swiftly double up on Jeremie Frimpong and Diego Laxalt when the ball went wide, while they were compact enough in the middle of the field to keep Celtic from penetrating their final third.

Games are won and lost on mistakes and yet again we are talking about the defensive line at set pieces.  Connor Goldson’s ploy of standing offsite in the hope that a defender would break the line and play him on, was not subtle, but it was effective.  It was an excellent cross from the free kick (which wasn’t a free kick, but no excuses), Duffy was an enabler and Valarie Barkas could have done better.  Questions remain for both.

Culpability was less clear at the second goal, which was well worked.  With so many Celtic players in the box, you would expect one to get in the way of the drilled cross, but it fell to Goldson; teams who create chances get these breaks.  It was a deserved goal (again, no excuses, but the handball!).

The last time we dominated Newco was two years ago in a 1-0 win at Celtic Park when Olivier Ntcham controlled the game and scored the winner.  Stephen Gerrard learned from that day as Olivier has not had a sniff against them since.

Being ineffective up front and shaky at the back are worries enough, but the biggest concern is that we were unable to do anything to change the flow of the game.  An inability to control the any part of the game is more worrying than poor defending or not attacking.  It is more worrying than the result.

What’s Arsene Wenger doing these days? Mibbe lookin for a wee fun job?

    —————————-

I know you are joking but wouldn’t it be good to have someone in transforming the whole game like him? A Joe Venglos type in the backroom perhaps?

  2. seriously does anyone know the first team coaching staff apart from

NL first team manager ( who doesn’t do coaching)

    JK first team asst. manager

    GS first team coach

    SW goalkeeping coach

so if that is it who the hell is organising the team

NFL threw in the towel an hour before the game live on BBC Scotland. Said we could live with a defeat today. That in itself is a sacking offence in my book. No Celtic employee let alone a manager should ever give an inch to der hun scum.

NFL has won every trophy going since being appointed Pontiff. Deserving of respect.

John Kennedy distancing himself from the team selection and formation today was noticeable.

  4. Bobby,

With no Supporters, as long as the pitch is OK, Home or Away makes little difference.

We simply have to step up after today & turn it on.

I’m still shell shocked after today’s display but I have to believe we are a lot better than we showed today.

We must win those 3 games, we can’t legislate for what the Huns will do, we just need to rack up win after win in the SPFL & see where the cards fall.

  5. Henry joy. It is very noticeable that john

Kennedy does not interact with Neil

    During a game

Then again John Kennedy has zero top

Flight experience at tactics and is only there as he is Peter lawwel man

  6. Lets exmine our starting team today –

    Barkas – new

    Welsh – young and new

    Duffy- loanee

Ajer – Constantly linked with other clubs

    Frimpong – young

Brown – coming toward the end of a great career

    Ntcham – not interested enough

McGregor – plays far too many games each season

    Laxalt – first game

Klimala – young and very little first team experience

    Elyonoussi – loanee

And we thought we could win with that team?

    Our Missing players

    Eddie – Inconsistant this season

    El Hamed – Steady

    Bitton – Always injured

    Christie – Wants away?

Jullien – What is wrong with him ?

Forrest – Tries hard hot and cold

Ajeti – Looks a good player

Griff – Get him sorted out

    Turnbull -Get him playing

    Taylor – Steady

Rogic – What is going on there?

Appologies for any ommisions but when you look at that we are a team in transition.

  7. Today was the first time I never watched aCeltic game when there was no reason too

I went to the beach and had a nice walk , after watching last weeks game against St Johnstone I feared the worse

Watching Neil Lennon I the dugout is soul destroying, please put him out off his misery release him now

Thanks Neil for being a great player and wanting to play for our club but all things come to an end HH

“John Kennedy distancing himself from the team selection and formation today was noticeable.”

That’s the second time you have posted this, can you elaborate on how you know this as I am intrigued.

I have also read that a few players reckon that JK is a quality coach, I have no idea if this is correct or not, but I can’t see why they would say it if it were not true, whatever, if JK is as many seem to think Pedro’s inside man, he may well be for a promotion sooner than we think……could he do better, who knows, but I would doubt he would do any worse against thems.

  9. TET

I’d have had Griffiths, Templeton and Taylor on from the start. Noisy talented Scottish players lead by Brown shouting the odds.

Wouldn’t have gone down, suffering a defeat, quieter than a mouse.

  10. Something is wrong. I agree with some commenters that there is whiff of a disconnect between the coach and some players at least.

Something is wrong. Often said but worth repeating…there isn’t even an appearance of game management going on. Neil just looks like he’s sat pissed off in the pub like the rest of us.

Something is wrong. What’s this about Jullien? Why does Édouard look unhappy at the moment? Who is leaking the team? Our players are so much better than that effort today.

Something is wrong. Fix it Neil before this crisis grows wings.

  11. No Bobby Does It Petta on

    Cork

Hear what you’re saying, but still it’s away games, to top six teams, three in a row.

If we get 9 from 9 then what a tremendous lift and sign of intent that would be.

    HH

  12. If we are really as bad as we looked today we are truly screwed.

I believe we were hit with a perfect storm, 5 or 6 of squad missing, players like Duffy returning after 3 International games & a lot of air mileage.

Huns had our number & took us apart.

We are a lot better than what we showed today,

Next few games are vital, I’m worried , of course I’m bloody worried but I have not given up on the team, we can recover from this.

  13. I remember meeting lenny in a pub many years ago and thanked him for a wonderful season. He asked me what part did i like about it….i said James forrest at rugby park, he said yes that was a turning point. Sadly i’m not sure he has a rugby park after that today. Hope i’m wrong.

Huns had our number & took us apart.

Sorry amigo i dont agree……we were just garbage and rudderless…they were at best average spl tbh

‘You and Ernie might be right but how does losing the league, CL chance and the cost of replacing the coaching staff (plus increased transfer spend) make financial sense to Celtic PLC??’

    ###

The only way that The Great Desmondo makes a return on his investment is if Celtic get into the EPL.

That’s probably much more likely to happen as part of a double act with the huns.

If Celtic win the league this season the huns face an existential crisis, particularly given the pandemic.

If the huns go bust they won’t come back again with the credibility they got away with last time.

At which point The Great Desmondo’s plan is derailed.

We are this evening pretty much where he said he wanted the two clubs to be when the huns went bust.

How much of a Celtic fan is he? When was his first game? Were his parents or extended family Celtic fans?

Where was John Kennedy today? Nowhere near NFL.

would it have made any difference????

  17. No Bobby Does It Petta on

Small point, but I liked the look of Ajeti when he came on today – very determined.

Didn’t make any telling contribution (not enough time) but I liked his attitude.

    Every little helps.

Think about it, one second, Celtic played a home game without a single shot on target, may as well have played against Cowdenbeath

When your manager throws in the towel in a live BBC broadcast an hour before the game and his team and assistant are nowhere to be seen thereafter. Aye, that makes a difference alright.

  22. Fourstonecoppi. John Kennedy is just one of the many reasons we have a poor football department

Doesn’t help the main manger to have an assistant with so little experience With tactics

Add Neil being a bang average boss and then bring in another Peter lawell appointment i Grahame Strachan and end up with a football department more fitted to hibs than Celtic Fc
