More worrying than the result

897

I know we had nothing up front, but Odsonne Edouard has looked more of a passenger in some games this season than Patryk Klimala and Moi Elyounoussi this afternoon.  The game was lost elsewhere.

Newco’s shape allowed them to dominate space whenever we had possession.  They were able to swiftly double up on Jeremie Frimpong and Diego Laxalt when the ball went wide, while they were compact enough in the middle of the field to keep Celtic from penetrating their final third.

Games are won and lost on mistakes and yet again we are talking about the defensive line at set pieces.  Connor Goldson’s ploy of standing offsite in the hope that a defender would break the line and play him on, was not subtle, but it was effective.  It was an excellent cross from the free kick (which wasn’t a free kick, but no excuses), Duffy was an enabler and Valarie Barkas could have done better.  Questions remain for both.

Culpability was less clear at the second goal, which was well worked.  With so many Celtic players in the box, you would expect one to get in the way of the drilled cross, but it fell to Goldson; teams who create chances get these breaks.  It was a deserved goal (again, no excuses, but the handball!).

The last time we dominated Newco was two years ago in a 1-0 win at Celtic Park when Olivier Ntcham controlled the game and scored the winner.  Stephen Gerrard learned from that day as Olivier has not had a sniff against them since.

Being ineffective up front and shaky at the back are worries enough, but the biggest concern is that we were unable to do anything to change the flow of the game.  An inability to control the any part of the game is more worrying than poor defending or not attacking.  It is more worrying than the result.

A FIVER FOR YOUR THOUGHTS on 17TH OCTOBER 2020 5:47 PM

Long time lurker only posted couple of times

Don’t give a flying fxxk what vitriolic replies I receive

I’m 58 supported Celtic all my life lived and worked abroad last 20 years

    Love Celtic

Want them to be as successful as possible

We have wrong board of directors and wrong manager of team

    Going nowhere

Brendan Rogers was first manager since Tommy that could have taken us to a different level of football

    Board fuxxed him

Seen this shit coming for long time

Most of you in this site need to wake up and smell the coffee

    ………….

    A Fiver:

You’re going to get a verbal kicking on here for talking sense! 😳

Having so many players gives Lenny something to hide behind. I would have no faith it would have been any better with a full squad. Players look unmotivated. Not trying for the manager. Manager presents as disengaged. He was preparing for defeat. Obvious from his pre-match press conference when he said defeat wasn’t that problematic. He knows he’s outmatched.

If no rapid improvement – and I don’t see where it’s coming from – it’s a just a matter of time till Lenny goes. I predict it will happen after the league is lost.

  3. Celtic’s approach to football matters is much the same as it was to the huns going bust. Muddled, conflicted and lacking candour.

And it’s the one individual who calls the shots who is responsible for that.

  4. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Criticism of the manager is totally valid imo, for if you look to the teams on paper there are still very few of their players who I would take over ours.

I’d say they have a better keeper than ours, their left back is way ahead of Taylor and Kent is better than Forrest, Frimpong, Mikey Johnson and Elyanoussi.

That’s it. 3 players (and the keeper is marginal. I’m hoping Barca’s grows in to his shirt).

  5. Watching Man City vs Arsenal. Looks like a completely different sport to what I had the misfortune to watch at Celtic Park today – energy, speed, movement, a home team attacking with 8 players in the final third, frequent attempts at goal. I am still gobsmacked that we could not achieve one single, solitary shot on goal today. And remember, this against a team consistently written off on here by many posters and our bloghost. Just an appalling apathetic performance. It is shocking that our management team failed to do one single thing to change the course of the game by an iota at any point.

Either Neil Lennon isn’t getting the input from his backroom staff or he isn’t listening to it . He is not addressing the problems Sevco are setting us for whatever reason.

WGS would be more engaged and I would welcome him in that dugout right now . Whether Neil would is highly unlikely.

I just don’t get this defeatist attitude of ‘who are we going to get that’s any better than what we have’.

Come to think of it , maybe that’s why PL and DD offered him the job without looking further afield .

  7. I do worry when we have team leaked for some time now but Neil decides today is the day to make it a focal point. It smacks of deflection. One other thing – the next time a Celtic player gets fouled they need to go down – getting fouled and trying to stay on feet only does the opposition favours and let’s the ref off the hook.

  8. Looking at the way our team play I dont think much thought is going into things, something or several things are wrong morale looks non existent and the team are going through the motions, time for change in the football department is now, the CEO should be off in the summer .

An outraged Rangers fans chief personally scrubbed off graffiti at a Celtic supporters club after vandals struck on Old Firm day.

David Black, chairman of the Irvine Rangers Supporters Club, rushed to his rivals’ aid this morning after kerbs outside the No 1 Celtic Supporters Club in Irvine, Ayrshire were painted red and blue.

Armed with a brush, David made the two minute walk from his Gers base and scrubbed the kerbs while others cleaned off slogans daubed on walls.

A massive ‘RFC’ was sprayed at the entrance to the building in the town’s Bridgegate.

Where would NL be today if the opportunity at CP never arose?

Does anyone seriously think he’d have a gig anywhere near the level of Celtic?

Maybe he wouldn’t have one at all.

    Thanks

I’m a realist don’t give a flying what comes my way this blog

Waited to long for BOD to get it right but their not interested in higher level football

  12. I think some folk on here are conveniently forgetting WGS last Season with us .The most boring football we’ve played up until now that is

  13. Celtic are a team of takers and passers. Only frimpong has the ability to beat a player. Moi is supposed to be that type of player but its bang average. Every midfielder today did the same thing, take and pass. No one looking at Klimala runs and griff was fuming when he came on.

You can write the script for a failed season already. it all started with “players who don’t want to be here can just leave” – good management is getting rid of players who don’t want to be here – instead Lennon want them to do what he does and for HIS motivation.

Classic example, Ntcham is faced with a training ground situation. A quick one two – instead of turning and matching the runner , he turns and watches with his joint! he is so lazy and surprisingly that is acceptable for Lennon.

I’m sorry – I’m fed up getting up at 4am to watch this utter nonsense. EVEN IN SCOTLAND we cant play attacking football, wing play, guile and creativity. We should be out of sight of this rangers team.

We have better players , now find a coach who will get the best out of them.

One striker against that’s flat footed defense is a real shocker for me.

I’m ok losing but I’m not ok losing in that gutless thoughtless manner !

manager out now – drastic measures for drastic performances

We have been playing total garbage for some time now, to deny that is head in the sand stuff, the only reason we are winning, just, is we have better players that the rest, sevco excluded for the winning, all it shows is how badly we are coached, imo of course.

We are regressing at an alarming rate.

More disappointingly is that the Port Vale game was infinitely better. Each team having 14 shots and 7 on target.

  16. STEBHOY

Only frimpong has the ability ?

Errm No he doesn’t IMHO opinion another in a line of flatters to deceive players we have had of late – goals assist per game for a forward?

  17. DESSYBHOY-Don’t get me wrong I like listening to WGS but his time is gone now and so has Martin’s in my opinion.

correction to last comment meant ‘a forward attacking player ‘

  22. Let’s not kid ourselves either, that mob have bossed the last few matches against us, that alone is a worry. Also is the fact that we look a disengaged team with players unwilling/unable to get stuck into the opposition

  23. lets all do the huddle on

We have better players , now find a coach who will get the best out of them.

but do we have better players?

    i dont know any more

they have outplayed us the last few times we have played them

can it all be down to tactical pish from the management

    as i said

    i dont know now

  24. Maybe another factor is the amount of loan players we have rather than players we have signed and are our players, there is bound to be a large variation in salaries in the squad and egos abound in professional sport.

  25. A fiver for your thoughts on

    Anyway

I’ll come back here and congratulate NL when we actually destroy a shit team with 10% of our budget

That’s every team in our league

    FTF

    That’s all we expect?

  26. GLENDALYSTONSILS

Agreed. Slippy spent most of the match in conference with his coaching team, discussing and evaluating. Lennon spent most of the game muttering to himself slumped in his chair. Rarely these days do you even see him barking orders or trying to rally the team.

The team is a reflection of him – flat. I wonder whether all is not well.

  27. I know you shouldn’t comment when drunk and I usually try to be posiitive but my God Celtic are clueless this season – Neil Lennon hasn’t a clue and SG has totally (McAllister)outwitted him for 2 years now. Klimala is poor and Moi is scared Barcas looks like a wee boy lost and we lack a midfield creator. dare I say it is too late? Saw this defeat coming. I would have chosen Michael O’Neill over Neil all day long – but I have had a drink and am really negative SORRY
