More worrying than the result

897

I know we had nothing up front, but Odsonne Edouard has looked more of a passenger in some games this season than Patryk Klimala and Moi Elyounoussi this afternoon.  The game was lost elsewhere.

Newco’s shape allowed them to dominate space whenever we had possession.  They were able to swiftly double up on Jeremie Frimpong and Diego Laxalt when the ball went wide, while they were compact enough in the middle of the field to keep Celtic from penetrating their final third.

Games are won and lost on mistakes and yet again we are talking about the defensive line at set pieces.  Connor Goldson’s ploy of standing offsite in the hope that a defender would break the line and play him on, was not subtle, but it was effective.  It was an excellent cross from the free kick (which wasn’t a free kick, but no excuses), Duffy was an enabler and Valarie Barkas could have done better.  Questions remain for both.

Culpability was less clear at the second goal, which was well worked.  With so many Celtic players in the box, you would expect one to get in the way of the drilled cross, but it fell to Goldson; teams who create chances get these breaks.  It was a deserved goal (again, no excuses, but the handball!).

The last time we dominated Newco was two years ago in a 1-0 win at Celtic Park when Olivier Ntcham controlled the game and scored the winner.  Stephen Gerrard learned from that day as Olivier has not had a sniff against them since.

Being ineffective up front and shaky at the back are worries enough, but the biggest concern is that we were unable to do anything to change the flow of the game.  An inability to control the any part of the game is more worrying than poor defending or not attacking.  It is more worrying than the result.

  1. Any new coach coming to us would say we’re not fit enough – we lack energy – we don’t press the opposition

  2. The only positive from today is that they are no favourites for the league. Despite telegraphing how they play, we have been dominated in the last three fixtures and without guaranteed points against them we’ll have to hope their squad collapses after Christmas.

There’s too much going on for us at the moment; covid, post BR; the 10: team transition.

  3. Our Champions league exits , Copenhagen, and and the last 3 games against the sticky’s all add to the evidence that standards are decreasing.

If you hadn’t noticed before that Sevco are decent, then today was evidence.

They play to the same structure, but can alter it depending on how the game pans out .

    This requires coaching.

We have a bigger squad with more basic talent but don’t have a proper or steady structure.

    Good coaching would help .

Sometimes keeping so many players happy means changing personnel , but not the shape.

Sevco are decent but not anything else .

We should be better but we aren’t.

Covid and injuries played a part today, but it also exposed some harsh realities.

I hope our manager can learn from today but I have my doubts.

    Still as scunnered CSC

This should read: the last time we dominated Sevco was when BR was here.

  5. “We lost the game elsewhere” – In truth we lost it everywhere. Never have I witnessed such a half hearted Celtic side take to the field in a derby. We’ve been poor or average all season but in the big games, we’ve been found out. Lenny has to be under huge scrutiny now and that;s not to lay the blame all at his feet.

Eddie has done nothing all season and Griff ate for three months and wasn’t ready to pick up where he left off last season. So it’s not all Neil’s fault but it has to be said, his line ups and subs (or lack therefore) has been baffling. This season may be too much for Neil. But we’ll sink or swim together because like Lenny with his subs – Lawwell’s changes will come too late.

As an aside, Andy Walker’s gloating during the last 20 minutes was something to behold.

I sincerely hope he receives no special treatment or favours from the Club.

    Let’s all do the huddle

Most of you in this site need to wake up and smell the coffee

    —-

    most?

    so more than half then

you must have precise numbers to say that

so let us hear the exact split of folk on here who need to wake up and those who dont

im guessing you dont have them

but just on to abuse folk

This site was a breath of fresh air when started

I’ve long lurked and watched the best posters leave since Paul took his position with BOD

    Think what you will

  8. AC Milan top of the Serie A, with 4 wins, maximum points, 9 goals for and 1 against. Tough task for Thursday, given how unmotivated we were today.

  9. GEEBEE1978- yip definitely but think he wants back in the EPL.

    A Newcastle,villa type team

    listen

ive seen todays defeat coming for weeks.

ive said many times on here this season how pish we have been playing

and that we hadnt played anyone apart from ferencvaros who were only an average side and we lost

so in your language, i did smell the coffee.

even before i went to sleep, let alone wake up to it

but saying that phrase comes across as insulting fellow posters, as if you are better than them

there is just no need for it

    as for paul joining BOD

no idea who BOD is or why it matters on this site

BOD was a cartoon i watched when i was a wean. dont think paul was in it tho

Apologies for the intrusion on the blessed blog but I’ve seen enough now to know we’re going backwards

Really angry and want some change

  12. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Yep, the narrative going in to sheep game will be ‘Celtic looking to avoid 3 consecutive defeats’.

  13. The acid test is ask a sevco fan if they’d like us to change manager – if they say no it tells you everything.

Maybe but as O’Neill and Rodgers discovered, Celtic isn’t a bad place to build or repair a reputation. Get a few trophies under his belt, some European football then a decent Premier League job.

    Everyone’s a winner :)

The question to ask is what is he doing for us now?

  16. always thought the league would be decided this season in favour of the team who takes the most from the 4 games against them’s , we haven’t got off to the best of starts.

    Neil Frances Lennon,

    I ask you,

What has he ever done for Celtic?

    —–

That sums the huge complacency right across the club this season. Our group of untouchables cannot be critiqued given past glories. That’s fine if that’s what rocks your world but as the flame goes out with them don’t expect that to sustain success going forward.

Going for Ten has become a testimonial for the veterans and we have lost our egde by sticking with them regardless of their output this season. Cognitive dissonance galore as we expect this sentimentality to carry us to the title.

    It won’t.

    HH

  18. Anybody concerned about Milan aren’t paying attention. I don’t care about Milan. Play the under age team for all I care.

  19. onenightinlisbon on

And as for the Europa league?

I don’t give a flying fek for it but it gives a shop window to the players Lennon has convinced to stay this season. Get them to ****

  20. At least when we finish 2nd this year we go straight into the Europa and don’t have to face the annual CL qualifying embarrassment ;o)

  21. GEEBEE1978-agree but let’s not kid ourselves,BR was never going to stay here for ten .It was always a stepping stone and a few brownie points on his cv.He is career minded.Which I have no problem with by the way.Just be up front about it.
