Most scouted player in years, new keeper, Balzers wreaking havoc

755

A big Celtic welcome to our new goalkeeper, Logan Bailly, who joined from Belgian side Leuven yesterday, and to Nadir Ciftci, who was confirmed a Celtic player this morning, Ronny’s third and fourth signing of the summer.  And it’s only 9 July!

Craig Gordon will be difficult to shift as Celtic’s first choice keeper but Celtic rested him regularly last season, his first back in action after three years recuperating, so Logan will expect a chance to shine and stake his claim.

Nadir Ciftci should be expecting the most difficult preseason of his career.  The weeks ahead will be an intense step up from what he was used to at Dundee United, but if he responds he stands an excellent chance of leading the line on the third Champions League qualifying round, should Celtic overcome Icelanders Stjarnan.  Next week’s second round game might come too soon.

Ciftci’s every move, kick, pass and, erm…. disputed event, has been watched by Celtic for months.  They know as much about the player as it’s possible to know without actually employing him.  They will also have had the opportunity to take references from Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong.  In short, if we have another Pukki-Balde-Scepovic on our hands, we have more acute problems than simply another striker who didn’t work out.

For this reason, I’m sure Ciftci will deliver what’s expected of him.

Delighted to hear former Fifa executive committee member Chuck Blazer has been banned for life by the game’s governing body.  Blazer ‘came to a favourable arrangement’ (I think that’s the appropriate phrase on these occasions) with US prosecutors when convicted of tax evasion, money laundering and bribery.

Unfortunately, Fifa’s structure, which gives the Cayman Islands, the Cook Islands and Comoros more combined voting power than Germany and Spain, encourages corrupt patronage to thrive.  The money flushing through tiny countries in order to ‘develop the game’ ensures wealthy people are created, given powerful positions, from where they can be relied upon to vote the ‘right’ way.

Still, at least no one with Blazer’s rap sheet would be allowed to exploit the patronage to hand out blazers in order to wreak havoc on a vulnerable Scottish club (laughs away to himself for weeks).

  1. Humility is not about think less of yourself, it’s about thinking about yourself less.

I have just watched the Ciftci Press Conference. Apart from the the Big Fella`s smooth handling of the pack, I was struck by the number of questions which were asked to elicit a controversial headline. If these people were less sensationalist seeking and more honest, they would, I believe, gather much more interesting information from which informed opinion in their articles would be the result.

I don`t agree. If a person seldom thinks about himself but , when he does, does so in an elevated fashion, I would not consider him humble.

    Kitalba,

Meant to add that I didn`t have time to look when you posted your earlier links but that Nir Biton one above is an absolute cracker. Thanks.

Something about today’s article doesn’t sit well with me. Quote:

“The money flushing through tiny countries in order to ‘develop the game’ ensures wealthy people are created, given powerful positions, from where they can be relied upon to vote the ‘right’ way.”

First, I think it would be fairer to say ‘some’ in relation to tiny nations. Otherwise your brush is disturbingly broad.

More importantly, I think you are falling into the trap of many righteous westerners who ignore the fact that Large Western Nations have long been places where ‘wealthy people are created, given powerful positions, from where they can be relied upon to vote the right way’.

Stanley Rous? Chuck Blazer? You are concerned that tinny countries have more pull than Germany and Spain. Yet, Germany appear to have been up to their otters in World Cup fraud. England? Russia?

Just remember that, for every seller, there is a buyer. Returning ‘rightful power’ to the big, first world countries is not the answer.

The answer is in improving governance, oversight, and transparency to such an extent that corruption becomes difficult, and convictions become easier. No matter what part of the world the perpetrators come from.

I could throw in the names of a few locals, but I don’t think that Bryson, Farry, Ogilvie or Smith are needed to make this particular point.

Mate the way I take that is: by all means be good with yourself, like yourself, but be good to others more, like others more.

(by the way I screwed up the original post, but if nobody else got the sentiment… you did – good man)

  7. Just watched Nadir Ciftci’s presser on CTV.

Articulate, thoughtful, funny, inclusive and wants to be here.

Good in front of the camera and easier to understand than Paul Lambert. :o)

Scott Brown gets a nod too – :o)

Now where did I put that left back list…..

Big question is what are WE going to do on F5 day when fax lines are burnt out as some are trying to rush papers to the SFA.

Now has anyone got any advice about how to avoid being bitten by sharks on the NC coast next week?

Starry, thanks for posting the Ciftci press conference, I was in the no camp when I first heard we were after him, but if he can handle himself on the park like he handles the media he will do fine. I especially liked the part when they asked him about Broonie and he said he did not mention any names, the bhoy is intelligent and can think on his feet, I like that

    Welcome Nadir !

  9. Nider looks like a big lump of a lad, offers more physicality up top than we had last season and going by stats brings others into game (assists). That can only help the middle 3. Griff offers more goal threat and likes a pop at goal but less of a team player.

Exiled Tim – I assess Scepovic on his time at Celtic – he HAS been a dud, and please don’t give me “number of chances” – Izzy, VVD, Denayer, Johansen, Armstrong, GSM, Lustig, Gordon, Griffiths, and more, forced their way into the team; Scepovic has not, after TWELVE MONTHS – in his appearances he has been a DUD, also he cannot be ‘setting the heather on fire’ in training, otherwise he would be getting more chances.

On your point on doing it in “better leagues”, I will say only, Gravesen and Juninho, both duds at CELTIC.’ – nuff said.

Unfortunately Chuck Blazer’s life long ban is going to be short, as the poor soul is dying of cancer.

Maybes the scottish game isn’t suited to many players, if the footballers were allowed to play football, maybes we would see the game improved 1000 fold, cos the way it is presently, we will forever be a footballing backwater, never again to reach the heights of yonder year, when scottish football was a decent standard.

    What went wrong ???

On TommyG, he was a dud before he came to Celtic IMO, Real bought the wrong baldy fella, and Juninho was past his sell by date when he came to us, he did nada after he left, no the best examples to use.

    Still, football and opinions eh.

    weeron,

I have disagreed with you in the past, mainly about the quality of Celtic TV but on this occasion I think your post at 1620 is outstanding, the Germans in particular have a few mirrors to peer into. Fair play to them that a few have held their hands up and taken their punishment, unlike our opponents in Alba.
