Motherwell need to get emotions under control rapidly

327

Meeting a self-proclaimed aggrieved opponent is seldom an appetising prospect, but I would rather have Motherwell away tomorrow than any other opponent.

Our opponents have stoked a sense of injustice brought about when their defender impeded Scott Sinclair, and finished the final as a contest.

What Motherwell manager Steve Robinson should not be doing is polluting his thoughts with what has been and gone. He could find himself two goals down within 15 minutes if his players take to the field with anything more than a desire to stop the champions running amok.

Motherwell can go fourth in the table if they win their game in hand, but the experience of Dundee United in 2015 should caution them. United were flying high before facing Celtic four times in succession. A Scottish Cup draw was followed by defeat in the League Cup final, the Cup replay and the league. That period broke United, who were physically and emotionally wrecked by the experience. They slid down the table and into relegation the next season.

After tomorrow, Motherwell have four consecutive away games, all in the league. If they don’t get their emotions under control rapidly, Celtic will punish them and things could get out of control before Christmas.

Your point only makes sense if we assume that Neil Lennon and Chris Sutton have an innate bias against Celtic which determines, or at least influences, their opinions.

  3. We should expect a physical backlash tomorrow against the cluggers.

Colum is a perfect fit for the mssm and Wells agenda.

It’s no surprise we have drawn twice in controversial games where he ignored the laws of the game in favour of our opponents.

Hibs clear penalty not given and St Johnstone clear punch at KT’s head only deemed yellow.

    A career driven cheat.

I would play Ntcham and Kouassi who are no shrinking violets.

Are you makingf new laws to support your argument?

The law is simple he commited a foul and was punished. There is no such thing as soft or stonewall penalty.

Do not make up nonsence to support your argument.

  5. sure dont we all know that Andy Walker is a font of knowledge and his opinions on a game of football are more relevant than Ernies or even my own because he played football for a living..

You apply the laws to the facts.

To do that you have to firstly decide what the facts are.

In this case you have to determine whether there was contact sufficient to impede the progress of the player.

If you decide that there wasn’t, then there’s no offence. So no foul is awarded.

  7. Afternoon all

I think the whole penalty debate is a bit, well, pointless in a bald men/fight/comb sort of way and I am sure that Ernie Lynch has no need of assistance in arguing his points. But I agree with him. Sunday’s penalty was not a ‘stonewaller’ or anything like it. Worse decisions in the past though – all of an hour earlier there was a much worse decision which went yesterday As I said yesterday we should be magnanimous enough to admit we got a rare refereeing break in a final.

I never saw any of the punditry from Lennon and Sutton I would guess both men called it as they saw it. Perhaps we would prefer it if they were merely more articulate versions of Derek Johnstone.

We got a pen for that? I hope Fergie’s dug was hiding when its owner got home! (Pretty sure from my view behind the goal it actually was a foul by Bell mind you)

  8. Moussa Dembele is out for tomorrow and Saturday and is also doubtful for Anderlecht, now who should have a grievance?

  9. Could someone reassure me that we actually won the League Cup on Sunday? All I am seeing on here are statements about a penalty kick. Now convinced that it is a point scorers blog at present. In fact there has been more point scoring on here in the last two days than was achieved at Murrayfield on Saturday. Give up lhads and get back to supporting Celtic and rejoicing in our victory. We have a serious game on Wednesday, concentrate on that please.

There you go again making new laws up…

is there also a rule you must push a player really hard?

lawsof the game are simple did he commit a fould or not?

Referee when making a decsion does not decide how bad the foul is or how hard the push or the pull was,,that is not a law of the game.

The argument that the pull was not sufficent to impede SS does not detract from the fact a foul was commited.

  11. KEVJUNGLE on 28TH NOVEMBER 2017 1:29 PM

But, SS going doon like Andy Walker, left a, hunnish, back handed favor sort of taste in the mooth.

    ————————————————–

Sounds like it’s yersel that went down easily rather than AW or SS – not the first time you’ve had that hunnish taste is yer mooth?

Or maybe they looked at the horrendous tackle he got away with an decided he was lucky not to get a 3 match ban for serious dangerous play.

Ernie are you also calling our manager a liar?

Tell me exactly what he said ( ie verbatim quote ) that makes you think I’m calling him a liar.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers defended Sinclair immediately after the game.

“Scott’s not a diver,” he said. “There was contact. I’ve seen it again, it’s a definite penalty.”

Moussa Dembele is out for tomorrow and Saturday and is also doubtful for Anderlecht, now who should have a grievance?

    ————————————————————

Excellent point. The near leg-break is far more worthy of discussion. Potential career-ending “tackle”. Don’t see much comment on that – not even from Lasley’s wife…

  15. Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers defended Sinclair immediately after the game.

“Scott’s not a diver,” he said. “There was contact. I’ve seen it again, it’s a definite penalty.

“I think Scott was clever, there’s no doubt, but I think probably what the referee is looking at is that there was no intent for the ball. I think that was enough to award the penalty.”

You are accusing SS of diving. Our Manager insists he’s not a diver.

  16. ernie lynch on 28th November 2017 2:18 pm

You’ve never read the laws, have you?

every day and twice a day at the week end

  17. Victim will not appeal red card and faces a ban in league cup next year. Will be free tomorrow night to attempt worse on opponents with a compliant ref.

Real victim will be sidelined with injury that could have been career ending.

Guess where the mssm sympathy lies?

  18. BSR- Guessing so, he didn’t look too chuffed at being subbed ,but the assault be Kipre looked like he stretched ankle ligaments

  19. HOT SMOKED on 28TH NOVEMBER 2017 2:18 PM

    He’s expressing his opinion.

    I disagree with him.

He’s not exactly a disinterested party though, is he?

  20. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    ERNIE

You disagree with Brendan that it was a penalty?

Bugger me backwards, you should have said.

  21. So their manager says it would be a waste of time and money appealing the red card ……..

Motherwell’s Charles Dunne has won one of two appeals against the red cards he was shown last week.

The defender was dismissed against Ross County in the League Cup before suffering the same punishment four days later in the Premiership against St Johnstone.

The judicial panel rescinded his red card from the weekend, which was originally given for denying a goalscoring opportunity, after the club argued he had not made contact.

  22. Natknow

I hope BR highlights the horrific tackle by Kipre on Moussa that has put our player out and the perpetrator able to play, the Compliance Officer is a total waste of time money and has no credibility by leaving this tackle unpunished.

  23. BOURNESOUPRECIPE on 28TH NOVEMBER 2017 2:31 PM

Why is there no update from the takeover panel who ruled against GLIB?

    ###

The Court of Session hasn’t delivered its judgement yet. Tomorrow would be nice timing.

  24. “Scott’s not a diver,” he said. “There was contact. I’ve seen it again, it’s a definite penalty.”

I have to say that that does not read like `opinion` to me.

I agree he is not a disinterested party and neither, now, are you on this issue.

Does the fact that two ex-Celts were pilloried for offering their opinions really annoy you as much as it appears to have done?

    JJ

  25. Ernie,

Should we now value the opinions of BFDJ and Andy Walker more because they played the game,or should we just accept that they both talk pish ?

  26. There’s a difference between “diving” and exaggerating the consequences of contact, in my opinion.

SS didn’t “dive” . He was savvy enough to make the most of a situation which wasn’t of his own making. This is now accepted in the game – rightly or wrongly.

If there had been no contact, and he’d thrown himself to the ground in an attempt to mislead, or “trick” the referee, then he could rightly have been labelled a “diver”, and any punishment handed out retrospectively would have been merited.

Disappointed that Sutton and Lenny took the view that they did, and didn’t alter their view after seeing numerous replays. As former professionals, they should know the score, and be more than aware that SS did what any professional will do in the same circumstances. Hopefully they’ll call it the same way every time this happens, otherwise, they’ll look a little silly……..

They’ve made a rod for their own backs here.

My last words on the Penalty. We have a very important game tomorrow night.

  27. 2 tickets sourced for tomorrow night. Huge thanks to IT. And thanks to the others who were trying on my behalf.

    Woo-hoo, one more sleep!

  28. No retrospective action against Kipre for assault on Moussa’s ankle.

Not surprised but it would be good and came out and explained why.
