Motherwell need to get emotions under control rapidly

327

Meeting a self-proclaimed aggrieved opponent is seldom an appetising prospect, but I would rather have Motherwell away tomorrow than any other opponent.

Our opponents have stoked a sense of injustice brought about when their defender impeded Scott Sinclair, and finished the final as a contest.

What Motherwell manager Steve Robinson should not be doing is polluting his thoughts with what has been and gone. He could find himself two goals down within 15 minutes if his players take to the field with anything more than a desire to stop the champions running amok.

Motherwell can go fourth in the table if they win their game in hand, but the experience of Dundee United in 2015 should caution them. United were flying high before facing Celtic four times in succession. A Scottish Cup draw was followed by defeat in the League Cup final, the Cup replay and the league. That period broke United, who were physically and emotionally wrecked by the experience. They slid down the table and into relegation the next season.

After tomorrow, Motherwell have four consecutive away games, all in the league. If they don’t get their emotions under control rapidly, Celtic will punish them and things could get out of control before Christmas.

RobinsonErnie Lynch stokes the Siege Mentality at Motherwell.

He started it after the game on Sunday by implying to all that it wasn’t a penalty & that Kipre was in tears.

He continues with his implieded criticism of the SFA’s Appeal panel by telling all that it would be “a waste of time & money”.

We are entitled to infer from RobinsonErnie Lynch’s words some or all of the following

    a) he has a seeing disability

    b) he doesn’t know the FIFA Rules of the Game

    c) he doesn’t understand these rules

    d) he believes the Appeals panel will follow these rules when they consider appeals

    e) he knows what Kipre did but after his postmatch comments can’t walk back to dignity

Just beat win your next two games Celtic.

OK. So you’re suitably astonished. I’m glad we’ve cleared that up. Eventually.

As I understand your original post (this one VFR800 IS NOW A MONSTER 821 on 27TH NOVEMBER 2017 3:12 PM) you had concluded that the foul was awarded for holding, not for impeding, because a penalty was awarded.

Can’t fault your logic because you assumed, wrongly, that impeding could only be punished by an indirect free kick. You were wrong in that regard, as we’ve now agreed, because the separate offence of impeding by contact (which you were unaware of) is punishable by a direct free kick.

So the basis for your belief that the offence was for holding falls apart.

  3. If Sinclair had dived, I could understand the outrage over the penalty.

But it’s as clear as day he didn’t. There was a tug on his arm. How severe, only he and Kipre know. But if the referee sees it he has to consider it a foul and award the penalty.

Thomson is a dreadful referee, but he got this one correct. Sutton is good on calling out vested interests in the Scottish game, but he seems to have a real bee in his bonnet about Thomson – he loves criticising him, no matter if it appears the ref was right (or at least was not catastrophically wrong).

Motherwell now look very foolish in not appealing. As I understand it, the grounds are that Kipre’s ban doesn’t kick in till next season and he is so good he might be in the EPL by then.

    As they say… Hmmmmmm…..

Not the SPFL website, that’s for sure. No sign of it on there, unless they’ve run out of room on the site, with the listing of the 100+ major honours conferred on that young whippersnapper club Sevco by the Scottish football “authorities”.

Or maybe they’ve decided that, having got away with awarding so much to a club whose years are so few, they’ll just ignore any Celtic honours from now on, thus ensuring that Sevco’s status as Scotland’s “most successful club” remains intact.

And why not? It’s not as if Celtic or any other club would challenge them, is it?

The ‘tug’ didn’t cause him to fall to the ground. He chose to go to ground. If he hadn’t made the conscious decision to go to ground he would have stayed on his feet.

I think that is caught by the definition of simulation.

You apply the laws to the facts.

To do that you have to firstly decide what the facts are.

===> In this case you have to determine whether there was contact sufficient to impede the progress of the player.

If you decide that there wasn’t, then there’s no offence. So no foul is awarded.

    ===================

This might help decide the force of contact. :)

    https://sciencing.com/force-momentum-affect-object-motion-8600574.html

Whilst Lennon and Sutton might have more mass individually on Sinclair that would affect their velocity so I’m not sure they are the best judges.

Velocity will be a factor as it requires nota lot of impact at speed to knock a speeding object off course and the rules appear to take this into account although the ref is the judge..

  12. It will be a major worry if Moussa is not fit for Anderlecht game. I think he is the better otion over Griff in European games

There is not a lot between Celtic & Anderlecht, the 3 nil away scoreline is not an accurate reflection on first game.

If they get a goal ahead it could make for a very uncomfortable night.

We need all our big guns available, Dembele now doubtful & a visit to their midden coming up tomorrow night when they are likely to be at their dirtiest.

  13. glendalystonsils on

How come Kipre’s ban would not apply until next season when we’re not even halfway through this season?

Does the ban only apply to the league cup? If so, what a nonsense.

  14. to anyone who knows me, and has my phone number, its been stolen, so apoligies if you texted or called in the last 3 days. lost lots of good football memories in the phone, family treasures as well, absolutely gutted.

    on to the fitba.

i did get to the match on sunday, and enjoyed it, again.

watched it all twice today, as confined to home. what is very noticeable is the motherwell players constantly pulling at any celtic player who went past them, or in dembele and sinclairs cases, arms rapped around them when backs to goal. the man who was sent off did it on 3 occasions before the penalty. and whats his greetin all about ? 15 stone, 6 feet plus, but he is greetin. man up.

next, jamesy continues to astound me. what an improvement in this guy in the last 12 months, fulfilling all his potential, braver, more intelligent, determined, even getting tackles in. well done gold star.

paddys last 15 minutes, just a master class of trickery, wonderful to watch.

we could have, should have scored 6 or 7.

oh, and the phantom whistler is back, the man is a pest, pure spoils the soundtrack of the game.

These are the good times. Enjoy them while we can.

Yes, ban is carried over to next season.

Only violent conduct would have resulted in him missing next game(s).

  18. CORKCELT,

You’ve just preempted what I was about to say. We have still to play the same team, who relish the robust (kicking and hacking) approach to the game.

We can be pretty sure that their manager will have them wound up to face us. I am very worried that not just Moussa will not be fit to face Anderlecht; there may well be others. As Corkcelt says, 3-0 away wasn’t a true reflection of that game.

I hae me doots whichever MIB is in charge of one of our Scottish games but Willie Collum….The worst of the worst.

  19. ERNIE LYNCH @ 4:11 PM,

Where did Scott Sinclair gain an unfair advantage?

He was in the box, bearing down with the goal to his right, only the keeper to beat, in a position where he has scored on many occasions.

How do you deduce that falling as a result of being tugged back on his left side gives him an unfair advantage.

The Referees there, it’s up to him to make the decision. If there sufficient contact by the defender to impede the attacker in the referees opinion he has to give the foul.

If he gives the foul then Law 12 on denying a goal scoring opportunity comes into force.

That Law was designed for exactly this type of scenario.

I.e. A “professional foul” does not give the defending team the advantage in a potential goal scoring scenario.

That’s what Kipre did, no matter how subtle he thought he was being, he committed a “professional foul” and paid the consequences for it. That’s how the Law was designed, that’s how it was interpreted.

    Hail Hail

  20. Did the person who decided that the tackle on Moussa did not need retrospective punishment give any reason for his decision ?

Almost certainly Griff for The Moose but what other changes will Brendan ring?

KT might well be targetted so I would consider leaving him out. Calvin Millar looked pretty decent. Likewise, Ralston for Lustig might be an idea as he ( Ralston ) , looks a powerful package.

Brown, Ntcham and Kouassi would take no prisoners but would all three remain on the park ?

It is wrong that I am thinking of player safety before a game but Motherwell`s `style` leads me so to do. An interesting two games coming up.

Not so sure about your selection for tomorrow’s game, unless you are playing some fringe players to stop others being battered onto the treatment table.

The plot requires us to play well enough at home against a Pot 3 team so that we have Europe League Football after Christmas, so..the SFA/SPFL have us playing the same team of hammer throwers in three consecutive games just before that European fixture.

We will lose more than Dembele for that fixture.

Maybe Celtic’s medical team used Cyber Monday to order a few more treatment tables.
