Mourinho and pleasures delayed

442

For those who like their pleasure delayed, there is something wholesome in the wider awakening to the traits and abilities of Jose Mourinho.  The Portuguese inherited a squad at Porto in 2002 that would achieve great things there and elsewhere, notably against Celtic in Seville a year later, then against Monaco in 2004, but Mourinho’s principle contribution to results was his indulgence in the game’s dark arts.

Later in his career he would achieve while out-spending competitors, or by ‘parking the bus’ while still outspending most.  His temperament has always had a question mark over it.  Never has he won a league after his second at a club, by then, the impression of brilliance has always unravelled.

He made a barbed comment aimed broadly in the direction of Brendan Rodgers last week, although the Celtic manager was not mentioned, before picking on his own squad this week.  All will serve to divert attention from the fact that his spending is eye-watering and comparable to anywhere, but he will never get close to Manchester City.

Like others, we’ve been on the htcs for several seasons and have always purchased s/f and final tickets through that eligibility. Not a sniff at it yesterday.

By my arithmetic there are 36,000 seconds in 10 hours, so Celtic were shifting a seat in faster than 3.6 seconds for the entirety of the reported nine hour window just to sell 10,000. Jeepers, we’ve upgraded the TO worthies since my last wait in the rain there this season.

  3. What Boyata really said :

” “I’m not in a rush. Of course, being there, it’s good, but I don’t know what is going to happen in the future.

“It doesn’t really depend on them or even me, we will just see what happens.

“At the moment, we are still talking about it. For the moment, I am a Celtic player and I love Celtic.

“It’s a great team, I love to be there. Whatever happens next, we will see, but for the moment I cannot really say anything about it.”

He’s clearly holding out for a better offer, as is his right, and I wish him the best of luck.

We shouldnt even be considering prolonging his stay. Shudder to think about the defenders we have shortlisted if its true we are trying to get him to stay longer.

  8. Is the Boyata “headline” like Calmac “headline” rangers will fancy their chances and innumerable ole other “headlines” that bear no resemblance to what our players or officials actually said???

‘Boyata Contract Snub’ is what STV have gone with.

Possibly sensationalist, but thats their take on whats happened so far (and not a direct quote), which is talks having taking place with no deal agreed.

It wasn’t a direct quote, they’re no that daft. Well, actually, some of them probably are!

Tom Rogic, I think its fair to say, had other interesting alternatives on the table and is a player that has guile and poses an attacking threat. Boyata poses a threat too, at both ends of the pitch, but mostly to us!

This is a guy who is almost 28, playing in a defence with a 19 and 20 year old, and where is the leadership coming from! Not the big man.

Compare and contrast with the noises from wee KT.

We need a couple of big solid CBs with composure, good decision making and positioning. Why we’re even considering extending Boyatas deal is a mystery. Or maybe…we’re not… and this is more games from an agent.

My point wasn’t about Boyata as a player more how the press report our players contract talks and how they are picked up and reposted here and peoples reactions to the reporting which I think it’s fair to say is the purpose of reporting them in that way..

Sowing the seeds of discontent etc.

I think we will strengthen in the middle of the defence with both of our centres being unreliable or prone to injury.

For the record though I don’t think Boyata is any where near as bad as he is reported to be on here but he’s a obvious scapegoat as no one has the nuts to examine KT’s fairy regular shortcomings at the back post this season:))

Regards tickets for the semi-final, I got an email from Celtic yesterday at 11.45am telling me they were on sale, thanks to Cqn i was already aware and was standing in the que at the ticket office, after I got home (hour n half wait), I got a text telling me they were on sale.

Now l am fortunate that I’m in a job were I can down tools and head straight over , but many many thousands aren’t, like others I’ve been checking every day and did so yesterday morning, but I still missed the initial announcement, now here’s my point (at last), surely Celtic can tie up their computers with tickets that were used for the qualifying games and then send out a message to said people 24hrs in advance.

I am aware other factors stop people attending ie severe weather or family emergency, and no system would please everyone, but a bit of notice would appease most I think ( and lead to bigger ques).

Still shades Jnr was more than happy last night when I told him we had our tickets.

Hes an obvious scapegoat because hes a big clumsy CB who makes major errors at least twice a half on average and several unforced errors per game. 13mins into the Motherwell game and he has again misjudged a cross, lost his man and allowed a Motherwell player an effort at goal. 24th minute or thereabouts… that backpass?!!

These are not isolated incidents. They’re not because ‘hes just back from injury’. They happened at Ibrox and they happened at Fir Park. He got injured at Killie chasing a ball after his own unforced error gave possession away.

The point about Boyata is that the benefits he brings to the team do not outweigh the risks he brings.

KT is still learning, he has weaknesses, but the benefits outweigh the risks.

    By a long shot.

Ever noticed the ‘scapegoat’ is the guy making the highest number of mistakes?! Do you understand the effect this has on team cohesion/flow of a game?

You made the point about his unforced error at Killie several times, was he the only one caught out by the bounce of the ball that day?? As I remember the game many of our players struggled that day to control the ball and pass it well.

Anyway I didn’t post to make some firefighting defence of Boyata, who I think is a limited centre half in a long line of limited centre halves we had recently, I posted because you posted a sensationalist headline from the SMSM as a starting point for the discussion and because some of our players seem to be above criticism no matter how they perform…

  21. Big difference between a scapegoat, and a guy who constantly makes mistakes, a general point , not aimed at anyone

STARRY PLOUGH on 22ND MARCH 2018 10:48 AM

You can’t make a ridiculous point about KT not getting criticism simply because hes ‘one of us’ as you put it and not expect to be questioned.

McGeady was one of us and copped a fair bit of stick. I think we’re at the stage where we are talking about ability and not background – I certainly am. I will give examples like the ones at Ibrox, Fir Park, and yes Killie. Recent examples which are freshest in the memory.

You’re right about Armstrong, right off the boil, one good season(max) really. I am less concerned because hes found his place on the bench and most likely out the door in the summer.

Boyata remains in the centre of our defence making horrendous, unforced errors on a regular basis.
