Mourinho and pleasures delayed

442

For those who like their pleasure delayed, there is something wholesome in the wider awakening to the traits and abilities of Jose Mourinho.  The Portuguese inherited a squad at Porto in 2002 that would achieve great things there and elsewhere, notably against Celtic in Seville a year later, then against Monaco in 2004, but Mourinho’s principle contribution to results was his indulgence in the game’s dark arts.

Later in his career he would achieve while out-spending competitors, or by ‘parking the bus’ while still outspending most.  His temperament has always had a question mark over it.  Never has he won a league after his second at a club, by then, the impression of brilliance has always unravelled.

He made a barbed comment aimed broadly in the direction of Brendan Rodgers last week, although the Celtic manager was not mentioned, before picking on his own squad this week.  All will serve to divert attention from the fact that his spending is eye-watering and comparable to anywhere, but he will never get close to Manchester City.

If being on the Home Ticket Scheme, and no email address, how will I know if I have been successfull,in getting a ticket or not…

    ..

Mate there was no ballot, you had to either buy tickets online by phone or go to the ticket office yesterday, if you haven’t done any of them then you dont have one.

Although there might be a limited number still to sell so watch the Celtic website for details.

  3. As CHs go,Boyatta is one of the best defenders we have had, including VVD,who was prone to make mistakes defending in his time with us.I have stated before, the problem with Boyatta is,the way we nanny around at the back in our build up.He is asked to make a ridiculous number of passes during a game, sometimes put in awkward positions by receiving some ridiculous passes from what can only be described as buck passing.

If he is asked to make 100 passes in a game, and two go astray,is it any wonder? His job is defending, which he does as well as any CH on the go,I include the EPL,as every week their mistakes are highlighted on TV.No one is perfect.Down to 10 men against the Huns,he was excellent in his defending.BR wants his players, including keepers,to play a type of game that does not come naturally. If you want a CH,of the quality that seems to be required on here,we would need to spend VVD money.

The same people moaning about the fee for Edouard, are the same ones complaining about Boyatta. You get what you can afford.Stop acting like the deluded across the city.

Haha KT is rarely mentioned in the collective shambles that some of our lost goals have been:))

He is our Golden Child and deserves to be, he’s a one off but only the Bould Hot Smoked in recent memory has had the audacity to question his positioning.

I really hope we improve the quality of our team in a few positions, centre half being the most obvious one, it’s an unforgiving position and I think Ibrox has seen the end to Boyata, like Efe before him there’s probably no was back from that but he did enter the Belgian squad on his performances last season in our Invincible team???

That and signing Big Eddy being the other in my most humble opinion are priorities, Wee Paddy says he’d love t stay at Celtic for the Ten let’s hope that’s on our summer menu as well!!

Well I was replying to a post where he was mentioned, by you! And I am reiterating that a benefit risk analysis on Boyata does not come up positive… unlike with KT. Nothing to do with background etc.

Boyata has had 4 caps in 8 years, at least two of which were as a sub. I wouldnt bet on him making double figures!

Certainly CB is a priority position, thats what frustrates me – we could potentially be the strongest we have been middle to front for a long time. I dont want costly mistakes to be our undoing or see us underachieve.

Quite a leap there TB and a very random link. Evidence please? So just to get this right… those who complain about Boyata by definition automatically think we shouldnt pay £Xm for Edouard?!

As for your first line and the rest of that post, maybe go and lie down for a while.

    Never noticed your CB frustration:))

I’m a wee bit wary if it seems to me anyway that certain players are above criticism, we all want the best players we can have at any given time..

Let’s see what Brendan has in mind, exciting times ahead I believe!

One good thing about our conversation today it’s dragged Turkeybhoy our of lurk mode..

Alright TB good to see ye:))

  10. Boyata is a decent defender if all you want him to do is the basics. Tackle, clear the ball, use his pace and physique to stop the opposition. He is not comfortable with the ball at feet and being asked to make a pass out of defence. He’s also suspect when put under pressure and is prone to error. The way BR wants Celtic to play out from the back needs defenders who are comfortable with the ball at feet and can do the basics well. That’s why, IMO, Boyata moving on is probably best for all parties. We have two young centre half’s who tick all the boxes, except experience, so it makes sense to move forward with them and sign an ‘old head’ to play alongside them.

  12. Boyata showed in the second half of last season that he is a more than capable centre half. He played extremely well.

He has had a few howlers this season and, as he is in the centre of defence, it shows up more than others.

BUT we also need to look at who else contributes to the defensive issues.

Lustig has had more than a few dodgy games and left us wide open at times; as Hot Smoked has pointed out, KT is often out of position leaving the left CB (usually Boyata) exposed. Jozo has been less than consistent this season and escaped universal condemnation for needlessly getting sent off at Snake Mountain last week.

Nir Bitton brought composure to the defence but his lack of defensive instinct has seen him caught wrong side on many occasions. Kris ajar goes to ground far too often and can easily be pulled out of position. Gamboa is a rocket going forward, but can also be a rocket when defending!

Over and above that, Craig Gordon and Doris De Vries put the defence (particularly CB’s) under pressure with poor distribution and failure to command their box, especially for cross balls.

IMHO, all in all our whole defence has been less than impressive this season, although our defensive record domestically I very similar to last seasons. To me it seems that Boyata has joined a long list of escaped goats who seem to take the brunt of all negativity.

It would be interesting to see if Celtic By Numbers could do a comparison of all our defenders in the same way he did for Lustig and Simunovic recently; that may (or may not) tell us just how poor Boyata is!

No such comparison I can see but a few comments from CBN:

    ===

The decision to play Boyata despite no match time since February 3rd meant that Celtic had Ajer out of position at right back and a debut in goal for Bain, who hadn’t played since October 2017. That doesn’t scream stability. But with the home sides strengths being down the flanks and a propensity to get lots of crosses into the box, a back three was probably unwise.

Boyata’s unforced error, hesitating then attempting to flick a pass to Tierney rather than the simpler pass back to his debutant ‘keeper, stoked the emotional cauldron after a mere 2 minutes. The Belgian internationalist spent the rest of the half displaying poor body shape and sluggish footwork. Mentally, he was often out of position.

To balance, and give credit to Boyata, his second half improved. Perhaps being down to 10 men simplified the game and allowed him to focus on defending 1st, 2nd and 3rd. But he still racked up another calamitous defensive error over anticipating and letting Morelos a free run on goal.

  17. Traditionalist 88,

Too busy trying to be a smart ads and trying to get a dig in to understand the post. You want a CH that is a great defender, brilliant passer of the bail, great pace, makes very few errors, you have to pay,VVD money. He is not all these put together either. What I was saying ,is so many ,not thinking that Edouard was worth the money quoted, now want this perfect, cheap,CH.

I am not saying he is wonderful, the answer, but he is what you get for the money. As is,Simunovic,Sviatchenko. He is that bad,he is in the Belgian squad.Maybe they think they can play to the guys strengths and not ask him to be a Beckenbauer.

2 Ts in his name.Shocking.But that’s what some on here are more interested in.Too many wanting great quality for little money

Too many just want to moan.If we go through the rest of the season unbeaten, with back to back trebles, and just 2 defeats in 2 seasons, what will you whinge about then. From past experience on here, plenty.

Me,I will just enjoy the success, and leave it to the manager to decide who he wants,or does not.
