Mourinho and pleasures delayed

442

For those who like their pleasure delayed, there is something wholesome in the wider awakening to the traits and abilities of Jose Mourinho.  The Portuguese inherited a squad at Porto in 2002 that would achieve great things there and elsewhere, notably against Celtic in Seville a year later, then against Monaco in 2004, but Mourinho’s principle contribution to results was his indulgence in the game’s dark arts.

Later in his career he would achieve while out-spending competitors, or by ‘parking the bus’ while still outspending most.  His temperament has always had a question mark over it.  Never has he won a league after his second at a club, by then, the impression of brilliance has always unravelled.

He made a barbed comment aimed broadly in the direction of Brendan Rodgers last week, although the Celtic manager was not mentioned, before picking on his own squad this week.  All will serve to divert attention from the fact that his spending is eye-watering and comparable to anywhere, but he will never get close to Manchester City.

I have for many a long year been trying to trace an old mate of mine, Joe Duffy. He was from the Dumbarton Road end of Hyndland Street. He used to play the guitar in the Chancellor in Byres Road, I think. Ring any bells?

Just one of the many facts that struggle to reach the light.

The fix was in from around 2010. The only thing not known is who was in on it and to what degree.

Only an enquiry of the type Celtic/SPFL sought last Sept would untangle it for sure but SFA as one of the tangled don’t want it. Neither would Rangers as it would reveal the full extent of their duplicity. Jury is out on SPFL even though request for enquiry came from them, some doubts on Celtic but even more on UEFA.

It’s a bit like Watergate, starts as a burgarly but ends up with the President. The difference there was Woodward and Berntein were not on the Succulent payroll.

Why raise the child abuse issue ?

For the reasons I outlined in my post- it was all there. Now, why NOT raise the child abuse issue?

Did Fergus not “hammer” the issue – at the time ?

No- he did not, otherwise some people would have been up on charges earlier.

In fact, let’s start Ticatrader.com? If guys need work done, why not ask on here? Any work gained, Mary’s Meals gets a donation, and we look after fellow Tims, and possibly get work for Bhoys who are idle. Just an idea…..btw plumbers are never at your front door,as quick as some movies would have you believe…:)

Heard sleekit Guidi tonight on Superscoreboard telling the nation what family he is off. I have known he is a nephew of Jack McGinn for years. He telt the nation that he is the cousin of the McGinn bhoys fae Clydebank

Strange indeed. John and Stephen McGinn were on talking to their cousin Mark Guidi. Was a bit surreal. I hope John McGinn fulfills his ambition and signs for us.

Why should Brendan not listen to our opinions on something as mundane as football tactics, but the Club should listen to us on something that as important as the abuse scandals?

Most of us have played football, and see it every week ….

Hopefully, considerably fewer have had experience with the sort of abuse we are talking about.

Brendan is a football manager at a senior level and I believe you are in the legal profession. If you are looking for guidance on how to be a better lawyer I would assume that you seek guidance from your legal peers and those more learned or experienced than yourself. I don’t think your first port of call would be the serial offender who has been inside more courtrooms than yourself. Nor would it be the guy or gal who has an eidetic memory for every episode of LA Law or its Canadian equivalent (Due South???). That’s what most pros would do.

If Brendan can chew the fat with Swalex, Mourinho, Wenger or others who have been there and done that and earned the right, why seek those pearls from guys who have never had to manage senior professional footballers at a serious level? I think a wise manager should be aware of terracing feedback but they cannot afford to give it too much headroom as the feedback is volatile, contradictory and is a circle that cannot be squared. So you smile politely and nod your head at amateur advice and review your plan with those better informed and more level headed.

On the subject of Child Abuse, I believe CQNrs and the club managers are on a more even footing. Some CQNrs and some within hte Club will be quite well informed on the issue, others in both settings only moderately so , and many of us with , thankfully, nothing but book learning or hearsay to guide us.

In short- Football experts should consult with other football experrts to learn and grow as football experts, but football experts should consult with Child Abuse experts in order to better protect their current youth footballers and to make amends to those whose situations were mishandled in the past.

As for supporting the Celtic, I have always supported them, and will do till my dying breath.

What will not be allowed to develop, is “me” being cowed by a culture who’s modus operandi is,….

….”We pay for a season ticket, so, “we” are Celtic supporters, but, you don’t / can’t, so, you aren’t a Celtic supporter.”

I’m not saying that your saying that, but, that is the culture that I detect.

I’ll call you out of your fitba snobbery mhate!! ;-)

Football’s not some mystery or deep science or dark art. It’s the most readily understandable and accessible sport on the planet, hence its popularity.

In the words of Bill Shankley. ‘Football is a simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, of controlling the ball and of making yourself available to receive a pass. It is terribly simple.’ He was an expert. Perhaps that gives him sufficient credence in your eyes!

  26. My wife tells a recent story, no names no pack drill supplied by her, about a guy who tried to pull the wool over his wife’s eyes by telling her that he caught a recent bout of gonorrhoea from wearing his mates underpants and not from a professional lady from a neighbouring island. ACGR, you’ll ken this island – by reputation of course ;-)
