Mouyokolo and the Perrier-Doumbe path to immortality

768

Steven Mouyokolo’s last two permanent contracts were for clubs playing Premier League football in England but after joining Hull City as a 22-year-old and making 21 appearances in their relegation season, his move to Wolves bombed amid a multitude of injuries.  The player has made four appearances for Wolves and four for Sochaux in the last three years.

He no longer has the profile which would be considered in the English Premier League; which is why he’s pitched up in Scotland.  If his knee passes a medical this week, he’ll become the latest 6’3” defender on the Celtic books, competition for Kelvin, Virgil, Charlie, Efe and the rest.

Competition is good but Steven’s chances of edging out the competition to become a first team regular must be considered slight with his injury record, whether he passes the medical or not.  It’s more likely he’ll follow the path of Jean-Joel Perrier-Doumbe, although Champions League football and a Cup Final winner is not a bad return.

    Just imo:

    Centre backs in starting order

    1- Wilson

2- dik (think he’s bought to partner Wilson)

3- mulgrew (the hardest piece of the lenny jigsaw. Where does he fit)

4- ambrose (like mulgrew his versatility could be his downfall in commanding regular spot)

5- lustig (maybe a better right back. But with Matthews a top quality player in the role it opens up the possibility to play centre half.

6- Steven Mouyokolo. ( do we need 6 centre half?? And if we did should the sixth option not be a young lad doing well in the development squad?)

Now im not running the lad down but cant see the sense in it to be honest.

Another theory could be lenny looking to deploy the 3-5-2.

    Welcome Steven.

We have been screaming out for a few seasons for decent centre backs, we have them now, and still folks are moaning.

If we had anyone coming through, I could understand, but apart from young Fraser, who has been crocked, there is no one.

    Off oot with the dugs.

  15. I wonder where Sevco will end up playing…

Reports suggest that the Football League is

set to approve a move that will see Coventry

City play their home games at Northampton

    Town’s Sixfields in a ground-sharing

    agreement.

The Sky Blues look set to leave the Ricoh

Arena and travel 34 miles to play their

    home games in Northampton after

negotiations between club owners SISU and

Arena Coventry Limited – the owners of the

Ricoh Arena – broke-down, forcing the club

    to look at alternative options.

The club were recently bought out of

    administration by SISU-backed Otium

    Entertainment Limited, and immediately

talks began with Northampton and Coventry

chief executive Tim Fisher about the

    potential to share the ground.

Should the deal be ratified by the Football

League – which it is expected to do so in the

next 24 hours – it will see Coventry leave

their 32,609 capacity stadium and move to

the 7,653 capacity Sixfields for the

    beginning of this season.

    Northampton Town have refused to

comment on the speculation so far, but it is

believed that they are awaiting official

confirmation before they confirm the deal.

  17. A Celtic fan who was jailed after trying to start

a fight with Hearts supporters following a

football match had his sentence quashed on

    appeal.

Steven McGowan was previously found guilty

of committing a breach of the peace near

Celtic Park by forming part of a disorderly

crowd and shouting, swearing, inciting and

    challenging others to fight.

The 24-year-old was jailed for a year and

given a five-year football banning order after

    his conviction.

However, McGowan was freed after 19 days in

    custody and successfully challenged the

sentence imposed on him at the Court of

    Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh.

On Thursday, appeal judges ordered that he

should carry out 100 hours unpaid work in the

community and imposed a limited football

    banning order for two years.

The court heard that the trouble flared

between Celtic and Hearts fans on October 28,

2009, after the Parkhead side lost 1-0.

Lady Paton, who heard the appeal with Lord

Mackay and Lord Drummond Young, said: “As

the Hearts supporters walked along Springfield

Road outside the stadium, shouts of ‘Celtic

Casuals are here’ could be heard.

“There was some panic. Hearts fans, including

women and children, tried to get out of the

way. Some turned and ran back up Springfield

    Road.”

A group of about 20 men, including McGowan,

who were not wearing football colours, were

seen walking up the road. They were making

“come on” motions and shouting and swearing

    “Come on then Hearts w******.”

    Football hooliganism

Mounted police arrived to help officers on foot

and the horses formed a barrier across the

road. The group was ordered back but no one

obeyed. They turned and headed off when

    police reinforcements arrived.

Defence counsel Claire Mitchell argued that it

was “inappropriate and excessive” to impose a

custodial sentence and football banning order

on McGowan. She said he was aged 20 at the

time of the offence and in full-time

    employment.

The appeal judges were told that there was no

evidence at his trial that he was “a known

Celtic risk supporter” or that he was a member

of the Celtic Casuals or Celtic Soccer Crew.

The sales adviser had remained out of trouble

since being sentenced last year and helped

care for his grandfather who was suffering

    from Alzheimer’s.

Lady Paton said: “In our opinion, this case

was a good example of the frightening and

    destructive nature of football hooliganism.

When supporters of a particular team join

together – even spontaneously – to present an

    aggressive, foul-mouthed band clearly looking

for trouble, the potential for fear, panic,

violence and injury is very real.”

She added: “On this occasion, but for the

presence and intervention of the police,

    matters would undoubtedly have escalated.”

But Lady Paton said the appeal judges had

reached the view that in McGowan’s case

there were important factors which were given

insufficient weight, including his young age at

the time, his stable home circumstances, his

lack of previous involvement in football-

related incidents or violence and an

assessment that he was a low risk of future

    offending.

Lady Paton said the appeal judges endorsed

the view that if members of the public choose

to become part of an aggressive menacing

crowd of football supporters intent on doing

harm they could expect little leniency from the

    courts.

    She concluded: “Nevertheless in the

    appellant’s particular circumstances we are

persuaded that the aims of retribution,

deterrence and protection of the public can be

    met by a non-custodial disposal.”
