Mr Green and his invidious meetings

739

Information leaked from Charles Green that he is due to meet Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell today.  I’ve no idea if it’s true (sooo many wrong steers from over there) but, if accurate, it puts our man in an invidious position.  Mr Green appears generous when reviewing the success of meetings.

At his infamous ‘Blood on their hands’ press conference, would-be-pope-of-Ibrox, Brian Kennedy, told us “HMRC will not agree to a CVA until the very last minute”.  Why would they?  We believe Green has offered £8.5m but he has spoken about having raised £20m.  If HMRC are negotiating at all (and I have my doubts) they will want as much of that £20m as possible, and I’m sure they will, as Mr Kennedy suggested, wait until the very last minute before agreeing to anything (they won’t, b.t.w.).

None of this matters to Mr Green, he can say HMRC told him they’ll scrub the debt if he paints the Blue Room pink and no one can contradict him.  He is likely to be looking for some comfort from Mr Lawwell but I am sure he will be told that Celtic are unable to support any measure to parachute a Newco into the SPL (after his CVA fails, which it will).  Mr Green, who is also trying to maintain the support of the backers needed to commit cash by Friday, will almost certainly emerge from the meeting uttering words like “constructive”, “helpful” or maybe even “very positive”.

He is wasting his time.  Words like “sobering”, “alarming” and “downright obstinate” might be closer to the truth.

After all the hype about Green meeting Peter L, wouldn’t it be funny if Celtic put out a wee PR saying PL is on holiday , but , instead the tea lady or our in house solicitor would be pleased to meet with Mr Green

I really like this bit from Mark Daly’s interview with the hearald –

“The Insolvency Practitioners Association is launching its own investigation into Duff and Phelps. Grier and Clark now say they are taking advice from their solicitors on the programme, while they also claim they offered Daly evidence that would disprove the allegations but, smiling, he refutes this.”

    ‘GG:

The poets might believe in unconditional love, but we live in a world where betrayal is common currency, and I’ve learned to be more circumspect.

Unconditional love, frankly, is a fools paradise. I refuse to wear blinkers.

There is an IDEA that is Celtic, much as there is an IDEA about the Labour Party. I have already left the latter and it took years of soul searching, and I still have to constantly fight against returning. Then I read about Gordon Matheson addressing the Orange Order and I listen to Johann Lamont and I know the thing I love no longer exists. And that keeps me from further heartache.

I have said before; if our club settles for being the Better Half of Old FIrm PLC then I am done with not just Scottish Football but Celtic Football Club. I will no longer have any interest in the sports team which plays in this league, and I will hold the directors of our club personally accountable for destroying it.

The institution of Celtic I will always love, and I will find a way to honour that institution and still be part of this family, because the founding stones of our club mean more to me than trophies won or lost. I have thought long and hard about how I can maintain being part of this family even as I turn my back on the central thing at its heart. I will not play a part in Old Firm PLC. That is not what I signed up for, and not something I wish to endorse.

I love Celtic, as an institution, as an ideal, much as I love the Labour Party as an institution, and as an ideal. But I am not a mug, and unconditional love is for mugs. The idea holds no appeal, no romance for me at all, because my soul is not for sale and I have a stronger sense of self than that.

In the end, I have to be able to look in the mirror every morning, and the notion that the social phenomenon of Celtic has given up part of its own soul so that Rangers, the antithesis of everything we are, can live is intolerable.

  23. An Fear Dearg on

    Gordon_J backing Neil Lennon,

that’s a bit like the system that operates here in the Irish Premier League. if you want to play in Europe, you need a UEFA licence. If you’re a club that doesn’t expect to be qualifying for Europe you still need a ‘domestic licence’. There are some key differences between the two in that the amount of work required for a UEFA licence is a bit more, and there are some additional information requirements and some higher standards in some areas, but most areas are the same in both. Including the requirement to submit accounts.

And not only that, but each year UEFA send an assessor over to the Irish FA to review how they have handled the licensing process and to carry out a mini audit of their procedures. I would presume the same will apply with the SFA, so I would be intrigued to learn how the SFA would attempt to justify giving a bye ball to a club that was trying to publicly walk away from potentially over a hundred million pounds of debt. Especially when that club was also in breach of UEFA/FIFA rules relating to legal action against national associations.

  24. Thanks to Michael Gillen, DBBIA, James Rooney & BakuBhoy for your generous donations to my charity appeal.

BakuBhoy, if you are a UK tax payer (unlike RFCIA), you can indicate this on the JustGiving site and the charity will be able to claim an additional £5 as a tax rebate against your kind donation. However, I don’t know if you can mark yourself as a tax payer retrospectively. Thanks again either way.

I am now toying with the idea of attempting to complete the Leeds Country Way in a single day (next June). The LCW is a long distance footpath that circumnavigates the Leeds Metropolitan District. The LCW measures 62 miles (c.100km) in length.

Given how tough the final quarter of my 32 mile walk was last week, I suspect that 62 miles in a day is about 20-25 miles too far!

I totally respect you’re point of view but it does come across that you’ve already formed an opinion that even if we do all we can to prevent NewClub but the rest of the clubs allow NewClub into SPL, then from then on we’ll do nothing.

You might be right, and let’s hope you’re not, but I wouldn’t expect us to threaten to resign because the governing body can’t apply it’s own rules, until such time as it comes to pass.

    James

I believe in your passion which, as always, you articulate so fluidly.

However, I dont believe that you will give up on Celtic because:

“Being a Celtic supporter is the only role that gives me any sense of communal identity, that gives me a feeling of being part of something bigger and more important than myself, that links me in any kind of deep emotional bond with other human beings. What are the alternatives? To be Scottish, or a Socialist, or an existentialist, or a nihilistic misanthrope, or an alienated atheist? Being a logical positivist is a source of some comfort, but only intellectually. In the final analysis being a Celtic supporter means that I am not and never will be totally alone, or beyond the understanding of similar beings.”

    lennon’s passion:

And where did you hear me say that?

I said quite the opposite. I said “unconditional” love is for mugs.

I believe I’ve made myself quite clear. If, as you argue, Celtic is more than a football club, then why should I be unable to divorce myself from the football club and continue to love Celtic, the institution, the family?

I will find a way of doing it I can live with. I don’t care whether I’m missed or not. This will be a deeply personal decision, a hard one, a painful one, and neither your opinion or that of anyone else will make a scintilla of difference to me when it comes time to make it. I don’t seek your approval.
