Mubarak brings echoes of another adamant player

1779

Occasionally an innocuous comment left here can stay with you for years.  The day following the 2005 defeat in Bratislava someone wrote, “I suspect we’ll find an injury in Nakamura’s fitness test”.  The player was scheduled to sign imminently, but with Champions League income looking unlikely, doubts emerged that Celtic would pay the money.

Soon others expressed doubts that Shunsuke would want to come, but within 48 hours of that defeat, he was sitting in front of the media at Celtic Park.  I was there, among a gaggle of Japanese and Scottish journos, when one of the locals asked why the prospect of being without European football didn’t put him off.

Shunsuke handled the question perfectly, “I am not here for six games of football, I have signed for Celtic and hope to play here for many years.”  Rumour has it that not everyone in the dressing room back then was equally as enthusiastic about life in Glasgow.

I’ve heard lots about Wakaso Mubarak in recent weeks, he appears to be a genuine talent, as well as being spirited.  What is most appealing about him is that he wants to be here.  This deal would not have happened if the player was not absolutely committed to coming to the club, and making his stay a success.

Back in August 2005 we didn’t know what we were getting with Naka, and I’m not going to burden Wakaso with a comparison to a player who turned out to be a transformational legend, but we need players with big personalities who can walk into the dressing room with the determination to be there, just as Naka did.

Welcome to Celtic, Wakaso.  Be yourself and you’ll love Glasgow; Glasgow will love you too.

  1. Celtic Blog talks about Celtic signing shocker! He has shown a desire to come Paul, going by his Twitter account. Had to deal with pretty poor behaviour in Russia, apparently.

    No and no.

They applied for tickets which would have got them into both games. The tickets weren’t issued so they couldn’t attend. Therefore no boycott took place at either game.

  3. Agree Cultbhoy.

Seems in-depth research and big long words from the thesaurus are only used when things are ok but right now the blogs attempt at trying to big up another loan signing who is a reject and not getting a game is a sign of the times.

Another dud winger to join Berget and Borrigcter. An area where we have plentiful options but yet a striker still eludes. Scepovic deal still being drawn out over personal terms no doubt. Watch the crowds dwindle until the money put in is invested back into the product.

Why? I have NO doubts they died!

Do you have doubts that they are dead? por cierto

  5. A warm welcome to Wakaso Mubarak.

Make sure you hit the ground running from your very first minute on the pitch and never ever ever ever make any mistakes because that won’t be tolerated. Perfection is required from the get go.

    Good luck man!

Let me also say Happy Slovak National uprising day.

On this day Slovak militias rose up and fought the Nazis in the mountains and forests around Banska Bystrica.

Most if not all were slaughtered.

    Never to be forgotten.

I’m with you I consoled my 8 year old the other night by telling him I’ve seen far worse days. Rangers wining 9 titles in row and Celtic nearly going to the wall were as dark as it’s ever got football wise.

With the greatest respect your post @ 12.45hrs stated that you and your 5 mates chucked it years ago.

  12. Two years ago – no doubt under the increasing influence of Peter Lawwell – the SFA made it mandatory for any SPL/SPFL player over the age of 20 to have a minimum of 37% tattoo body coverage.

If the likes of ‘boy nextdoor types’ Craig Patterson, Fraser Wishart and Owen Archdeacon were playing at the top level in Scotland today they would be covered head to toe in ink. FACT!

Please do just one thing for me. Name the five, ok three, players that you would have guaranteed to sign if you had been running Celtic this summer. If you are stuck, name one.

There was an article the other day, probably yesterday, with real quotes, attributed to the player about us wanting him. Might have been the Scotsman.

P67 article – Paul buys into what we are doing, thats the main difference, its entirely up to him to pen what he likes. We need players with a point to prove, and for those who continually say we cant attract players due to the EPL, it is because of the EPL and our proximity to it, that will attract players with something to prove.

Personally, think R&J wont work, they obviously dont learn from their mistakes, if they do its always far too late. But how oftern have we seen the same mistakes from managers of our once feared club. NFL playing 2 in midfield most of the time, and one of them being Mulgrew etc etc.

If we sign this Serb/Slovenian and have both “new” wingers fit then we will have a better indication if it is going to work. The difference btw good sides and the rest is pace and quality up front, maybe just maybe what will make a difference to our european performances this year. Still think Ronny, whilst talking a good game, is a pup.

  19. Much preferred the end of the last blog. It appeared that we were beginning to have some grown up adult banter for the first time since Tuesday.

I think we’ve gotten a little bit hysterical this season. Yup, there’s a problem with our downward slide, and we’ve run out of fingers to count the missed opportunities where the board could have stopped it.

But I grew up supporting this club when we couldn’t expect to win the league. Had you told me then we’d have our rivals buried, be on course for 10 in a row and feel let down because once every couple of years we didn’t get into the Champions League?

The very fact that we’re so upset right now is evidence in itself that we’re doing brilliantly over the long term. Keep the board and management on their toes, absolutely, but always keep the faith.

    ________________________________________________________________________

Are we really doing brilliantly over the long term? In that case how many trebles have we won over the past ten years? How come average attandances continue to fall. How come the quality of player declines so that the shirt has to be shrunk to fit the players and not the other way round.

I agree pressure needs to be kept on the board and management but “keeping the faith” is the very last thing we should do right now. In the eyes of the board, KTF is about buying ST or match days tickets and the over-priced rubbish in their shops. What they fear most is supporters who suspend the faith and deny them what they need most, i.e. the Green Pound. I spent some of my hard-earned cash on a season ticket for my student son and now bitterly regret doing this. They will not get another penny from me till the club changes and realises the plc is there to support the team and not the other way round. If my son is looking to me to finance his Europa League ticket package, he’s in for some bad news. Organise and Boycott. Reclaim the club and defintely not KTF.

I think it’s fair to ask for what you are asking but it may also be fair if Paul decides not to offer it. I agree that the articles encourage initial discussion, however when the true insight on the blog comes from the collective (again with all due respect to Paul).

  24. Those leaving cos they don’t like Paul’s approach and think he is a mouthpiece for The Club, would be better making their constructive criticism and encouraging debate. If they just leave and Paul is indeed working to an agenda he will continue to do so with less opposition. TD67 is doing his side no favours either, continuosly acting the buffoon with his GIRFUY etc comments is tiresome and adds nothing to constructive debate. I hate to be critical of Paul67 because (a) I have got great pleasure & reward from his blog and (b) I have been told by lads who know him personally that he is a diamond of a guy. At present it does seem that he is not reading the blog and is out of touch with the general level of frustration that is no longer confined to negatonians but has spilled over to normally positive posters. CQN is not much fun these days but it still provides an outlet to allow people to vent their feelings. Do not underestimate how important that is.

  25. Oh I see the same old cliché is rolled out again.

If you criticise PL and the board….then you aren’t a true Celtic supporter.

The Celtic Aristocracy look down on their own supporters, treat them with contempt.

A wee bit of class hatred eh…

No company, not even an accounting firm, should be run by an accountant/finance person. They can only think one way. PL most certainly should have a seat at the top table but it should not be at the head of that table.

This will not change while an accountant is at the top, no matter who it is.

  28. Scullybhoy,

Does Swordfish have access to the well invested and funded scouting resources that Celtic do before giving you 3 names ? I’m sure there are 3 players from their list that we could have bought if willing to spend the money from selling Forster/Ledley/Wanyama/Hooper etc etc. Seems like when they do buy it is a token £2million panic buy to quell the fans rage. o much for planning ahead :) Disastrous management
