Mubarak brings echoes of another adamant player

1779

Occasionally an innocuous comment left here can stay with you for years.  The day following the 2005 defeat in Bratislava someone wrote, “I suspect we’ll find an injury in Nakamura’s fitness test”.  The player was scheduled to sign imminently, but with Champions League income looking unlikely, doubts emerged that Celtic would pay the money.

Soon others expressed doubts that Shunsuke would want to come, but within 48 hours of that defeat, he was sitting in front of the media at Celtic Park.  I was there, among a gaggle of Japanese and Scottish journos, when one of the locals asked why the prospect of being without European football didn’t put him off.

Shunsuke handled the question perfectly, “I am not here for six games of football, I have signed for Celtic and hope to play here for many years.”  Rumour has it that not everyone in the dressing room back then was equally as enthusiastic about life in Glasgow.

I’ve heard lots about Wakaso Mubarak in recent weeks, he appears to be a genuine talent, as well as being spirited.  What is most appealing about him is that he wants to be here.  This deal would not have happened if the player was not absolutely committed to coming to the club, and making his stay a success.

Back in August 2005 we didn’t know what we were getting with Naka, and I’m not going to burden Wakaso with a comparison to a player who turned out to be a transformational legend, but we need players with big personalities who can walk into the dressing room with the determination to be there, just as Naka did.

Welcome to Celtic, Wakaso.  Be yourself and you’ll love Glasgow; Glasgow will love you too.

  1. Why buy hun shares on the stock market today for about 25p when you can get them soon for 20p?

Will the new share issue be for a different type of share or is it a “money doon the stank wan” like the rest?

I hope they crash and burn ,again, soon.

    Personally.

Seville was the Phoenix which arose from losing 3-3 away goals v Basle in the final CL qualifying round

My personal take on the season is that no Celtic fan entered the UEFA cup that season in a positive mind.

The 3rd round away goal win over Celta Vigo was nice and gave us post Christmas European football for the first time in 23 years. I was so convinced that we were going to the final that I booked a family holiday and missed Seville (which remains the biggest regret of my Celtic supporting life).

Domestically we were doing ok but with the games coming thick and fast twice a week MON effectively – to use the cricket term – ‘declared’ at the 60′ mark most weeks with the team invariably 2-0 or 3-0 up. Point of declaration was widely regarded as Jamie Smith and/or Ross Wallace coming on as subs.

A particularly mixed 10 day period saw us draw at CP with Liverpool on the Thursday, lose the LCF at Hampden on the Sunday (BBJ missed injury time pen to force extra time), followed by a win at Liverpool on the Thursday and a SCQF loss at ICT on the Sunday night.

Had the team been deployed at 100% in SPL matches they would have done no worse that win the SPL on goal difference.

There was a reaction to the Liverpool victory at Inverness with a very under strength 11 fielded, including regular benchwarmers Guppy, Fernandez, Smith and McNamara. The LCF defeat was a joke.

The 2003 full strength team was the best Celtic team yet that I can recall with any clarity and proper understanding (I was aged 5 in 1967). The way things are going it will be my best ever.

  4. Peter Lawwell just saying what he has been for the past three years, that the club are not in the position to go spending stupid money on big contracts, and the ones I that have came in ? Some you get right, some you don’t, he isn’t going to pull a rabbit out of a hat, it’s the same as, we won’t end up like others spending money we don’t have, and that to me is the bottom line, he is just keeping the moaners happy, and also looking after the club.

  5. Poor interview on Celtic TV

No new insight because there there is no need for change in Lawwell’s opinion, it’s ‘as you were’ till the zombies generate us more cash.

Poor (easy) questions from the guy with the mike allowing the same old statements to be trotted out, i.e. policy on signings is good, ye win some ye lose some and we, over the course of 5 or 6 years have won overall. (no drilling down questions about a lowering of quality overall, in particular the last 2 years)

Nothing on fan alienation, nothing on falling attendance, just ‘we are as frustrated as you’ tried and tested mantra

All in all, nothing to hear that hasn’t been done to death so expect nothing to change

Just on the point of expectations I think that what is unique to the current situation is that it has been preceded by 2 years of CL money and player sales that have generated £11 million plus this window. In that context signing nobody and consequently having to go with a striker who doesn’t fit the managers’s plans/style and who doesn’t score in Europe has left people angry and bemused. The team might not have qualified for the CL but the least the fans could expect under the current circumstances is that the manager would be given some support (as his predecessors had been).

I agree. It is truly puzzling why we would not invest from a position of relative strength. Some have suggested a lack of vision on the part of the CEO, others have suggested we are hoarding money in preparation for Sevco entering the SPFL and yet others have suggested that Celtic are actually sending money to Sevco via a back door.

Commonsense psychology suggests we look at behaviours and infer what thoughts might have caused those behaviours. I find all of the above explanations difficult to accept on that basis. I think this is just plain old risk-averse behaviour. Which is what usually happens when you have accountants in charge of strategy. In my experience.

The Seville run didn’t pick up until the Blackburn match.

On the morning of the draw, a couple of days after Celtic lost to Basle, there was no enthusiasm about being in the UEFA Cup at all.

    Understandable right enough.

    The £4m is before expenses.

The last share issue which “raised” over £20m had expenses in excess of 25% of that.

The rise of the accountancy geek and the hegemony of “management” culture in the UK over the past 20 years has been depressing to watch and be part of. Few businesses of any size have a “soul” where employees are made to feel part of something special. Shame.

  16. Wow. The PL interview. A man immersed in his own greatness

Any happy clappers there might change their views on him

Shocked and stunned at his comments

More right signings than wrong ones

Take a look at the squad now peter

Made a few comments on the Facebook link from Celtic fc and they blocked me No swearing no bad language just questions about his salary. Wow. Pravda is indeed alive and well

  17. Peter Lawwell answered all the questions he was asked and never backed away from any thing, but the usuall suspects in here will be up in arms as predicted, great to know the club is in great hands, and not in the hands of some of the phannies in here.

Looking forward to the draw now, well done Peter, and come on the hoops.

  18. Questions you wont hear asked on Celtic TV no.1

Peter, big Johann hinted at the frustration he felt when building a right good spine of a team, you punted the players as soon as big money was offered, how can Celtic progress in Europe when you keep cashing in, meaning we have to build from scratch every year?

Questions you won’t hear asked on Celtic TV no.2

Pistol, ma mhan, the Green Brigade say you promised them a section (forget your false promises about standing) what went wrong there, are they lying or are you?

Questions you won’t hear asked on Celtic TV no.3

Almighty one, Are there any CEO’s in a similar sized company as this on your salary who have failed to deliver success…….and some Celtic fans are embarrassed at your stance on a working wage for employees…..any comment?

I wondered if he’d be asked hard questions by the media, as that’s what we were told he was going to be doing today. I didn’t expect those hard questions, I didn’t expect anything but the same old tired, worn out answers.

There is not a hint or remorse or regret in that interview. There are some mouthed sentiments about us all feeling the same, but none of us is on a performance related bonus dependent on the balance sheet, and I think a half million or more in coming payments might even temper my own disappointment a wee bit.

No acceptance that things need to change. On the contrary. A bland defence of failure at every strategic level, and the same old crap about us playing in Scotland. We’re the only club that has money it CAN’T spend.

That interview offends me on every level. He thinks we’re absolute mugs.

Thank God I do not pay for this. Thank God I stopped funding it. I would be throwing something against a wall having watched that shameless dismissal of our views.
