Mubarak brings echoes of another adamant player

1779

Occasionally an innocuous comment left here can stay with you for years.  The day following the 2005 defeat in Bratislava someone wrote, “I suspect we’ll find an injury in Nakamura’s fitness test”.  The player was scheduled to sign imminently, but with Champions League income looking unlikely, doubts emerged that Celtic would pay the money.

Soon others expressed doubts that Shunsuke would want to come, but within 48 hours of that defeat, he was sitting in front of the media at Celtic Park.  I was there, among a gaggle of Japanese and Scottish journos, when one of the locals asked why the prospect of being without European football didn’t put him off.

Shunsuke handled the question perfectly, “I am not here for six games of football, I have signed for Celtic and hope to play here for many years.”  Rumour has it that not everyone in the dressing room back then was equally as enthusiastic about life in Glasgow.

I’ve heard lots about Wakaso Mubarak in recent weeks, he appears to be a genuine talent, as well as being spirited.  What is most appealing about him is that he wants to be here.  This deal would not have happened if the player was not absolutely committed to coming to the club, and making his stay a success.

Back in August 2005 we didn’t know what we were getting with Naka, and I’m not going to burden Wakaso with a comparison to a player who turned out to be a transformational legend, but we need players with big personalities who can walk into the dressing room with the determination to be there, just as Naka did.

Welcome to Celtic, Wakaso.  Be yourself and you’ll love Glasgow; Glasgow will love you too.

  1. There are tougher group draws but we are not yet in a position to look down on any Austrian, Croatian or Romanian top club.

They will all be close to the level shown by Legia and Maribor. We need to be better than the Celtic who turned up in those ties.

Salzburg’s front three (Soriano, Kampl & Alan) are very good but they have a new coach this year and have not started as well as they showed last year.

  2. The Battered Bunnet on

So, Salzburg, Zagreb and Astra eh.

Let’s face it, with Berget supplying Stokes, and Mulgrew covering Ambrose, we’re an absolute shoo in to qualify…

  3. It wouldnt be so confident bhoys.

We arent exactly world beaters at the moment.

The Green Man. Do you honestly think getting rid of one of the best CEOs in UK football and bringing in another CEO who would be answerable to D.D. would make any difference to the team on the park ?What surprises me is that the team are not getting it in the neck big time from our supporters they get paid a fortune and cant pass the ball. The new manager himself has admitted he has made blunders in his team selection.I want to see more effort from the players I want to see them learn to keep there shape I want them to take there chances and put the ball in the net.I cant see changing the CEO making making any difference on the park.H.H..

….and, unlike Tuesday, let’s get the fans backing the players as the games progress….booing during the game only contributes to sapping the players’s confidence, and ultimate defeat….

Astra are three places lower than Celtic in rankings.

They have a very cosmopolitan teamsheet.

    That will not be easy.

  10. I have just watched the PL interview.

    Oh dear.

    A few things become clear.

The so called strategy isn’t changing. The board are in denial about it not working. To evidence this we are now being asked to look at the last 10 years in an attempt to spin the story that it’s working.

PL quotes transfer of Shane long and McCormick as examples of it all being too hard. No one is asking us to spend that money. But hey let’s not let that get in the way.

Perhaps most worryinging was the wee slip around the board message not seeming to get through. This betrays the GAO between those who run the club and those who support the club. We are miles apart and simply no longer understand one another. Incredibly serious and my contention is that is because the board can’t explain a strategy that is flawed and failing.

Lots of talk that ronnie could have bought players. But reality?

And still the carefully worded statement around spending every penny ON the club. Note this very careful wording. Not on the team. Actually even that is not technically correct give that DD gets 600k in divs every year and doesn’t reinvest it.

This careful corporate wording is clearly nonsense given our ahem small cash reserve so it has to be added to with a nice vague “in the long term”.

So those who run the club are in denial and being economic with the truth.

And then we got a new line. That selling players makes up for the loss of the Hun????? Now on every level this is bizarre and twisted logic. So does that mean that we DO need CL income to survive cos if we got the extra CL income and so.d players wouldn’t that be too much. Or do we need both?

How much do we lose for the Hun not being around??? It’s not 10m that’s for sure.

You see here it is. The hankering for the Hun return. That’s what peter means here. The loss of around 4m (I am being generous here) is somewhat counterbalances by the massive amounts we have made inn the CL and in transfer fees. So where is it all going. Ah to. The ahem small cash reserve.

So he is hankering for them back to get that income back. It’s as we thought.

A final word about his we get it more right than wrong stuff. The players he quoted, all except 1, have left and he has patently not replaced them with what he described as better quality.

That’s simply a smokescreen and, when it boils down to it, a lie.

So where does this leave us. Utterly divided, heading quickly in the wrong direction, with executives that say one thing but do another, with a manger who apparently has lots of good ideas but on the pitch it’s a shambles. And with those who run the club simply unable to understand why the support are so angry.

Oh and they clearly have no intention to change but they will be happy because they THINK the return of the. Hun will increase income.

They only THINK that because the backlash hasn’t even started yet.

    All in all pretty disastrous.

I think I will get back to working. It’s currently more uplifting than celtic……

    Oh dear.

  11. Snake Plissken on

Astra knocked out Lyon to get into this.

Very hard side to beat I imagine.

Salzburg are a good club and have Soriano up front. Hard tie.

Dinamo Zagreb – Some South Americans as well as the talent from that region.

    Hard tie again.

They may not be big names but they are good enough to beat us given the mess we are in at this time.

A lot of work to be done.

  12. So a football team loses a football match and some people demand that the CEO of said club issues a public apology to the club’s supporters.

See supporters who have never supported Celtic through the bad times. Make me bliddy laugh so they do.

  13. So many moaners on here. Will they be at the Europa league matches or are they just Champs league glory hunters?
