Mubarak brings echoes of another adamant player

1779

Occasionally an innocuous comment left here can stay with you for years.  The day following the 2005 defeat in Bratislava someone wrote, “I suspect we’ll find an injury in Nakamura’s fitness test”.  The player was scheduled to sign imminently, but with Champions League income looking unlikely, doubts emerged that Celtic would pay the money.

Soon others expressed doubts that Shunsuke would want to come, but within 48 hours of that defeat, he was sitting in front of the media at Celtic Park.  I was there, among a gaggle of Japanese and Scottish journos, when one of the locals asked why the prospect of being without European football didn’t put him off.

Shunsuke handled the question perfectly, “I am not here for six games of football, I have signed for Celtic and hope to play here for many years.”  Rumour has it that not everyone in the dressing room back then was equally as enthusiastic about life in Glasgow.

I’ve heard lots about Wakaso Mubarak in recent weeks, he appears to be a genuine talent, as well as being spirited.  What is most appealing about him is that he wants to be here.  This deal would not have happened if the player was not absolutely committed to coming to the club, and making his stay a success.

Back in August 2005 we didn’t know what we were getting with Naka, and I’m not going to burden Wakaso with a comparison to a player who turned out to be a transformational legend, but we need players with big personalities who can walk into the dressing room with the determination to be there, just as Naka did.

Welcome to Celtic, Wakaso.  Be yourself and you’ll love Glasgow; Glasgow will love you too.

  1. setting free the bears for Res. 12 & Oscar Knox but saying no to CQN racists

hmmmmm …. champions league types (lets exclude the billionaires with debts that would frighten a small country though) so for example lets say Arsenal or Porto (to take away the EPL money issue – although for a selling club their £35m seems like it was well spent) …. or maybe Maribor

That lead article just reads like pure propaganda to me.

Sorry, but it tells us the square root of nothing.

I noticed that there is no mention of how much this new signing cost the club, or how long his contract is for, what sort of money is he going to be earning etc.

So I then went on to the NewsnowCeltic site, only to read that the player is here on a one year loan deal fs.

    Disappointed.

There’s nothing unusual about. The fact that there’s four home associations has been a contentious for years.

In any case if a no vote results in it being easier for us to get into the EPL what’s the problem?

Yet another example of the cheating that goes on in Scottish football in favour of Old and New RFC , the surprising thing is it doesn’t seem to bother people going by the lack of replies to your post .

Their situation should not result in Celtic being punished.

Answering yes or no would you be happy with Celtic playing in the English Championship?

Well first mate, I am very much in the Yes camp, so there’s that …

And secondly, I’ve never supported us playing in England. I wholeheartedly don’t. I want no part of that swollen, overblown, overhyped, morally bankrupt, financial basket case.

A European league, or gutting it out here in Scotland …

I already think we’re a club that’s lost part of its soul. God help us all if we ever end a bit-part player on that particular ship of fools.

And yet, the official named FIFA spokesperson said nothing of the sort. It was an un-named guy that was raising the alarm bells. And what would Jim Sillars be doing in providing quotes to a story planted by the No campaign? That don’t make any coherent sense.

Agreed – there has been an over-obsession with sell-on value. Sometimes you have to look at what a player can bring to the club while he is here (see Lubo!). An experienced head can be the difference on a big occasion.

  23. Talking of Jim Sillars, I was reminded of him when Salmond said that a yes vote would be a mandate for him demanding a currency union.

    Jim Sillars will vote yes.

Jim Sillars has said, repeatedly, that the idea of a currency union is ‘nonsense on stilits’.

So his vote can’t be regarded as an endorsement of Salmond’s position.

The same goes for Alex Bell, one of Salmond’s former advisers. He reckons currency union would result in the bank of England controlling the Scottish economy.

I’m beginning to think Salmond might be a bit of a chancer.

To be fair though, he has lost a lot of weight, so the referendum hasn’t been a complete waste of time for him.

Salmond’s written his own political obituary come what may, and he realises it himself.

I don’t think he’ll ever be Father of the Nation. I don’t have any personal animosity towards him at all, indeed I respect him enormously and I’ve always been glad Scotland had someone like him swinging the hammer on its behalf …

But I’m hoping (fingers crossed) that by the time the next Scottish elections come about we’ll have an independent Scottish Labour Party with the right people at the helm and the right manifesto … and then I’m going home, at last.

I admire the man hugely and I think he possesses special skills … but I am never gonna love the SNP, although I’ve come to respect them a little bit too.

Come 19 September, my heart will belong to the next phase of the struggle, and that’ll be to recapture the political party I joined at 17.
