Mudryk and defence enough to quell Celtic

317

For all Celtic are being criticised for their shoddy work in front of goal, it was Shakhtar Donetsk who missed the most glorious chance of this or any season.  They passed up an additional chance that was at least the equal of Kyogo’s effort that went straight to the keeper.

We knew the script Shakhtar would follow in advance: defend deep, seldom venture up field, then break with devastating pace.  Mykhaylo Mudryk was almost worth the entry money alone.  Josip Juranovic did well to get goal-side of him on 58 minutes but the Ukrainian no. 10 cut inside before unleashing a devastatingly good shot from inside the D.  The warning signs were there from a break down the Shakhtar left a few moments earlier.

Most of Celtic’s effective work came from their own left, where Greg Taylor and Sead Haksabanovic caused problems, especially in the first half.  Haksabanovic demonstrated his crossing ability when he whipped in a ball on 34 minutes.  Leil Abada again showed his predator’s timing by arriving in front of goal.  His shot deflected for Giorgos Giakoumakis, who made no mistake from 7 yards.

Kyogo should have put Celtic ahead soon after Shakhtar equalised after Giakoumakis slipped a ball through to him, but last season’s sharpness seems to have slipped for our talisman.

Although Abada was key in Celtic taking the lead, we were not as effective down the right until James Forrest came on, on 65 mins.  From that point, Shakhtar were more than happy to defend deep to protect their point and hope for chances on the break.

Matt O’Riley was again very impressive in the deep mid position.  He and Reo Hatate both tired with around 20 minutes to go.  The delay in bringing David Turnbull on until the 84th minute was odd, David’s energy tidied up what was previously an exhausted central midfield.

Lots of questions for another day as we take stock looking in the European mirror.

  1. Tough read back!

Really looking forward to Friday when I can spend quality time with real Celtic supporters!

    BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. I was pleased with Turnbull last night, I feared he was disappearing but he did well and today I feel a lot better about how we are doing.

    In ither news….

It’s clear that Shortie are determined to catastrophise our Euro outing. Embdy would think they wur pleased.

    Aye.

St Stivs – I liked your “ponderings” at 3:14.

    Respect.

I’d disagree mildly on one point.

I am comfortable not making the Europa League for 2 reasons

    1. I think we’ll come back in December roaring. Most of the squad will have had a good break earlier than usual. Injuries will have cleared up plus Haksabanovic, Mooy, Seigrest, Bernabei and Applecart will have further integrated.

    2. Pedigree of clubs in latter stages of Europa League fluctuates wildly.

Last year was a low. Some tasty clubs in it this year. Happy to avoid.

  4. Shakthar are an enigma, unbeaten away record but a very average team who played like an SPFL outfit last night who drove the team bus onto the green sward of Celtic Park but they did have this guy Mudryk who moved like a sabre jet to score an identical goal to the one in Poland a couple of weeks ago.

It was reasonable performance interspersed with some sloppy passing and poor coner kicks. I expected a lot better from the Hoops and a victory in what I thought was a strangely subdued Celtic Park.

One tremendous save by Joe Hart and terrific strike by Giorgos. The Greek”s superb defence splitter of a pass to Kyogo unfortunately resulted in a shocking miss by the normally reliable Japanese goalador in these situations. European football after Christmas will be badly missed this season.

and a good respectufl response as well,

i get what your saying, i just feel another round at that level is helpful, even if its a good team, a few more games gives some more experience.

i feels like a longtime since we actually skelped someone in europe.

“I doubt many of our players would play noticeably better 6 months from now against the same opposition but what if they were set up differently?”

    ——————————————

    Who knows?

If your original point is accepted, i.e. they are unlikely to improve from playing the best (and I would dispute that with the example of clubs and players who have managed to get promoted a division and gradually adjust to the new higher level; I would also cite Virgil Van Dijk, amongst many, as a player improved by coaching and our ability to expose him to a higher level than Groningen provided) then you would still have the same inadequate players playing a system which is merely different, not provably better.

Do Park the Bus teams get bigger and better over time? who would you site as evidence of that.

Of course a younger player has more time to learn good habits and improve but their are both younger and older players who resist coaching and they fail as they don’t know as much as they think they do. Younger and Older players do improve with coaching and they improve by being exposed to a higher level of competition. Some will sink, no doubt, back to their level , as they cannot get there or cannot sustain it but if you can get half to three quarters of the team made better by testing themselves, you have improved the team.

Nobody learns by getting 10/10 on every exam they sit. Equally nobody benefits from getting 0 out of 10 on every exam.

On a scale of 1-10, if you are a level 5 player , you can lord it in the company of level 2 and 3 players or you can test your capacity to improve by seeking game time amongst the 7 and 8 level players. You may not make it but you won’t die wondering.

  7. BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL on 26TH OCTOBER 2022 5:23 PM

Spot on. It’s easy to forget that of the players who were involved last night O’Riley, Maeda and Hatate have only been here since January and played about 30 games each and Jenz Haksa and Mooy are on around ten games each. Add in Bernabei and Obligore. You’d hope that there’s potential for improvement in some if not all, with the exception of Mooy they’re nowhere near their peak.

I would hope the next two windows would improve the team as well.

  8. With the usual caveat about development not being linear, it’s pretty unlikely that our younger players won’t get better, even slightly over the next 6 months

As a group they won’t get worse

  9. ‘ Haksabanovic demonstrated his crossing ability….’ sounds like there was loads of them last night……..the crosses into the box, were as bad in 90 minutes, as i’ve seen for a long time, really need to work on this…..

  10. Of the 11 that started last night, only wee Greg was here just over a year ago? Add those from the bench and I make it 5 out of the 21 were here then? A massive rebuild. WELL DONE ANGE!

  11. Interesting comments on our UCL trials and tribulations, for me the campaign was very enjoyable, when results don’t go your way, it inevitably takes the shine off.

The results will come if we keep on as we are. Many of our peers compete in Europe, more don’t, the ones that do are normally the ones who qualify most seasons and have the experience and extra cash to make the difference.

For me we are short of a few players and European experience, we can rectify both and be a Pot 3 side next season.

It was a good game against Shakhtar but as players go no real standouts, so I’m going for the players that made the difference, CCV a tower in defence again, Giakoumakis for his work rate and goal and Hart for adding an air of confidence at the back and a great save.

So winging it’s way to JOBO’s POTY sencelpoty@gmail.com

    1. Giakoumakis

    Had a quick skim back…………………..lol

  13. SFTB – thanks for your thoughts and good points. Proof will be in the pudding I suppose.

I don’t think there are only two tactics – park the bus or all out attack. Angeball Vs Walter Smith. When you are playing against noticeably better opposition then adjusting your tactics is surely appropriate if it helps negate their strengths? Somebody used tennis as an analogy earlier. If Nadal’s strength is his forehand and he has a weaker backhand then you try to force him to that side. Slow coming into the net? Play drop shots.

Last night, at 1-0, we could have withdrawn Kyogo and Abada at around 50 mins and put on Turnbull and Mooy to bolster the midfield and push Haksabanovich up further with GG. More 442 in style than what looked at times like 424.

Instead we always replace forwards with forwards and as we tire, see the midfield being caught out up the park. The fact that we continuously lose goals in Europe to the counter attack suggests to me we are not learning our lessons. Rather we are making the same mistakes time and time again (whether it is Madrid, Bodo Glint or Shaktar).

I am not trying to be negative. I am more of a pragmatist than an idealist. I’d like to see us being more defensive when it is appropriate if it means we are more likely to hold onto a lead.

Cheers and here’s hoping there is no sense of a CL hangover come the weekend

Good evening all from Paddy Neesons. Looking forward to seeing all the Shipbank Shipwrecks on Friday at Saltmarket Boulevard. Smart but casual dress please, no onesies, tank tops, cravats or shorts. Buffet provided by me. Crappy jokes provided by BelmontBrian, a man who can clear a room quicker than a hand grenade. 12 midday onwards for fun and good times.

  15. Good evening, friends.

There’s been another decent turnout following last night’s game with 58 emails already in. And I can exclusively reveal that those votes have been spread across 10 different players so there’s clearly a wide range of opinions. As usual.

Results out just after 10pm unless events in Naples cause me to spill liquid over my workings! Fingers crossed for that, actually 🙂

So keep the votes coming lurkers, 2nd cousins and regular contributors. A few new voters for the last 2 games which is always brilliant to see. Never too late to join in. SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM

    Race to the bottom.

  20. My friends in Celtic,

Disappointment is natural and I would expect all connected with the club to be disappointed.

However we must move on and we MUST learn.

We belong . Europe is where we will be truly judged. We must dust ourselves down and attack the league. The league must be our primary focus. Winning convincingly will fuel our aspiration for European success which must be addressed next season with renewed vigour.

Our game in Madrid is still important. Money, prestige, confidence, marketing. Its all there.

I have been told we have had 68 shots on target in the CL to date. I can not confirm that stastic, but if true our goal ratio is shocking. One goal at home is also very disappointing.

My thoughts going into this CL tournament was , give it all and have no regrets

We have regreats and that is inescapable.

    However there are positives:-

Our manager will learn by European exposure.

    Our manager remains very popular

We have players with great potential

We will make pragmatic choices in the Transfer market.

Our European nights are still magnificent.

Our fan base is second to none.

    Our football is entertaining.

In summary: We can and will do better.

    HH, our journey will continue.

PS : Like the Andy Murray correlation. A couple of things. : Andy had to go to Barcelona to learn aged 15. His mother was totally focused, dedicated and inspiring. She never stopped.

And of course, Andy turned the huns down to train with them.

The highly experienced defender played almost 200 games in the Scottish Premiership where he won the league with Celtic four times.

He has also made just over 50 appearances for his national team — Nigeria — and was part of the side that lifted the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013.

  24. Origin

Neapolitan ice cream – also called Harlequin ice cream – is composed of three flavors. They are chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry that are arranged side by side without packaging in between them.

It is said to have originated from Naples, Italy. It derives its flavor colors from the Italian flag. Green (almond or pistachio), Red (cherry or pink), and White (vanilla). It was named in late 19th century presumably as a reflection of its Naples Italian cuisine origins.

The many Neapolitan immigrants who came to the United States are said to have introduced their expertise in frozen desserts. It first came to United States as Spumone in the 1870s.

It had a variety of flavors and if the three were brought together, they formed a common denominator that resembles the Italian flag. Note that Neapolitan ice cream was the first of its kind to combine three flavors in one container.
