Mudryk and defence enough to quell Celtic

317

For all Celtic are being criticised for their shoddy work in front of goal, it was Shakhtar Donetsk who missed the most glorious chance of this or any season.  They passed up an additional chance that was at least the equal of Kyogo’s effort that went straight to the keeper.

We knew the script Shakhtar would follow in advance: defend deep, seldom venture up field, then break with devastating pace.  Mykhaylo Mudryk was almost worth the entry money alone.  Josip Juranovic did well to get goal-side of him on 58 minutes but the Ukrainian no. 10 cut inside before unleashing a devastatingly good shot from inside the D.  The warning signs were there from a break down the Shakhtar left a few moments earlier.

Most of Celtic’s effective work came from their own left, where Greg Taylor and Sead Haksabanovic caused problems, especially in the first half.  Haksabanovic demonstrated his crossing ability when he whipped in a ball on 34 minutes.  Leil Abada again showed his predator’s timing by arriving in front of goal.  His shot deflected for Giorgos Giakoumakis, who made no mistake from 7 yards.

Kyogo should have put Celtic ahead soon after Shakhtar equalised after Giakoumakis slipped a ball through to him, but last season’s sharpness seems to have slipped for our talisman.

Although Abada was key in Celtic taking the lead, we were not as effective down the right until James Forrest came on, on 65 mins.  From that point, Shakhtar were more than happy to defend deep to protect their point and hope for chances on the break.

Matt O’Riley was again very impressive in the deep mid position.  He and Reo Hatate both tired with around 20 minutes to go.  The delay in bringing David Turnbull on until the 84th minute was odd, David’s energy tidied up what was previously an exhausted central midfield.

Lots of questions for another day as we take stock looking in the European mirror.

What also surprised me is that we played at Home on Tuesday and our next game is on Sunday. Sevco played tonight and their next game is Saturday. I would say that, plastic pitch apart, those fixtures are very much in our favour. Also, Aberdeen seem to be hitting a bit of form.

  2. Thur desperate to shore up the huns, keep the knuckle-draggers on side lest things go south off and on the park.

  3. MMM…For the remaining 25 gemmes that is my mantra “A win, is a win”

    lol see you in april-May

  4. For me it is fine that the delusion continues for the newco.

Aberdeen at home will be very interesting even with the McLean and Walsh combo as ref and VAr.

We have 5 days to prep and execute at Livi. With 3 days after for The next CL game

They have 2 days to Aberdeen then another 2 to Ajax.

I will be happy that they keep Gio in place until the break. By then we will be 8 or 10 points ahead and the league virtually over.

  5. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Dearie me.

I can’t actually explain why I did it but I read the alleged Dundee United fan’s match report from Naples.

    Dearie me again.

Imagine if your life’s ambition was to be a Graham Spiers Wannabee?

    How pathetic is that.

    Attention both of you …

“Thesaurus gobbling meets Glasgow vernacular” is neither eclectic nor imaginative.

Posturing, vacuous rubbish from a clown who gets his money too easily.

  6. I’m in the back Ange to the hilt contingent. We are watching the most entertaining football from Celtic domestically in many seasons. We also have a decent account of ourselves in CL in terms of creating many real goal scoring chances. We didn’t convert anything like enough of them but I believe that will come with experience at this level.

“Morelos and Kent – will anyone sign them on a free?”

Most likely. They will get a couple of 1.5m players for a 250k sign on fee.

“Noticeable that between last weekend and next weekend, Rangers have 2 home games and Celtic 2 away games.”

I think the Sheep may take a point at the weekend.

    Still with you mate.

  9. You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

  10. So we only have 5 games left until the World Cup.

    This Sunday vs Livingstone away.

Wednesday 2nd November away to Madrid.

Home to Dundee Utd on 5th November.

Away to Murderwell on Wednesday the 9th then

Ross County at Parkers on Saturday 12th December.

    Walk in the park.

    ‘mon the sheep!

  11. OSB.

I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t be happy with Ange.

The turnaround he’s effected has been sensational.

We know that everyone on and off the park is giving 100%.

No more petted lips or openly expressed desire to move away.

No more dull football. Crowds are arriving with great expectations each week.

The football is exhilarating at times, the opposition is mentally expecting a drubbing and they are setting up to avoid it. No matter the lineup we are always assured that we will have a go and play

    THE CELTIC WAY

  12. Aipple

I think that’s a very favourable set of fixtures. I don’t see us dropping any points.

    But then I never do.

  13. ‘GG

I agree. Madrid game might just be a nice day out for the bhoys. Not belittling what they do and are as professionals but to step out there, to the spaghetti music and play the best…. What’s not to love. Great night for the team and development. Dare I say value?

Also, we all wanted Madrid in the draw and we got a solid toe to toe for 65 minutes against them in 1st leg. So a favorable and fun 5 games ahead.

    Mon the sheep!
