Mudryk and defence enough to quell Celtic

317

For all Celtic are being criticised for their shoddy work in front of goal, it was Shakhtar Donetsk who missed the most glorious chance of this or any season.  They passed up an additional chance that was at least the equal of Kyogo’s effort that went straight to the keeper.

We knew the script Shakhtar would follow in advance: defend deep, seldom venture up field, then break with devastating pace.  Mykhaylo Mudryk was almost worth the entry money alone.  Josip Juranovic did well to get goal-side of him on 58 minutes but the Ukrainian no. 10 cut inside before unleashing a devastatingly good shot from inside the D.  The warning signs were there from a break down the Shakhtar left a few moments earlier.

Most of Celtic’s effective work came from their own left, where Greg Taylor and Sead Haksabanovic caused problems, especially in the first half.  Haksabanovic demonstrated his crossing ability when he whipped in a ball on 34 minutes.  Leil Abada again showed his predator’s timing by arriving in front of goal.  His shot deflected for Giorgos Giakoumakis, who made no mistake from 7 yards.

Kyogo should have put Celtic ahead soon after Shakhtar equalised after Giakoumakis slipped a ball through to him, but last season’s sharpness seems to have slipped for our talisman.

Although Abada was key in Celtic taking the lead, we were not as effective down the right until James Forrest came on, on 65 mins.  From that point, Shakhtar were more than happy to defend deep to protect their point and hope for chances on the break.

Matt O’Riley was again very impressive in the deep mid position.  He and Reo Hatate both tired with around 20 minutes to go.  The delay in bringing David Turnbull on until the 84th minute was odd, David’s energy tidied up what was previously an exhausted central midfield.

Lots of questions for another day as we take stock looking in the European mirror.

In the midst of the madness Drambowie Celt needed support & understanding but was ignored.

Drambowie not sure how bad the diagnosis was, I sincerely hope & pray that you can pull through and enjoy better times.

  2. USER1888, and whoever else he may be, must never be allowed to post again. I hope the Mod knows his other aliases.

    Morning all.

    DrambowieCelt – you’re a top man.

A piece of news caught my eye this morning.

Highland League team Banks O’Dee receive a 24 points penalty for player registration mistake.

    Surely some mistake, I thought.

A small fine is the precedent for deliberately “imperfectly registered” players, over a period of 9 seasons.

This club’s mistakes were *unintentional* … over ONE (?) season.

  4. Now the rants have been deleted, had a proper read back.

Drambowie Celt – you’re in my thoughts and prayers.

Hope to hear your on the mend soon!

Wee prayer said for a full and speedy recovery!

    Take care.

When Saint Stivs posted various list of posters past and present and, it must be said, some ghosts of Christmas past, I wondered why none of the bygone moonhowlers were given a mention. No names, no packdrill. But CQN has never seen a moonhowler, and no offence to moonhowlers the world over by the way, as seen in the wee wee hours of this early morning. Anti-Semetic, Anti-Catholic, Anti-Celtic, Anti-Scottish, and or Racist does not begin to cover it. Other Antis are available, I hope. Would make most posters appear models of virtue. Bring back Kojo, Kitalba, Canamalar, Tony Donnelly, SydneyTim, even PhilvisReturns a man who believed the poor are not working hard enough, (at being poor), all is forgiven.

The wee small hours are a strange place when times are tough . Quite a few on here have been through similar , keep posting your thoughts and your music choices .

Take care of your self .

  8. I missed the overnight rant , probably a good thing, not good for the old blood pressure .

If it was the same multi moniker they have now reached 55 that I’ve counted . Maybe enough enough ?

  9. Moderator – Well done but the key is not letting these sick individuals back on.

I do not think this individual is genuinely sick.

Sick in the head BIGOT/RACIST – aye, but not ill.

Cannot wait to see the bhoys of the old, old, old, old, old, old, old, old, brigade manana.

I am reliably informed that BRRB is on the bell for anyone turning up.

    D :)

  10. Good to see Alistair MacLean contributing. He makes a very important point relevant to thon deid team and how they were treated in comparison to that wee Highland league team who simply made a mistake in 1 game, not a season, of course, never mind 9…..

Didn’t see the ravings overnight. I presume they must have been really awful, since 3 pages have been discarded.

  11. No need to dwell of User1888. He is obviously in need of some love, attention and treatment.

Let’s hope and pray he receives it.

Drambowie Celt.Apologies for last night. I was just dropping off to sleep when the plug was pulled and you suffered the insults and indignities from someone in need of help.

Don’t take it personally and try to understand a troubled soul.

No point dwelling on the past. What’s done is done. We all have to move on. Or words to that effect. Though that might have been in relation to Res12. It’s hard to keep up sometimes.

AM chat — I think that you have been taken in by the excuses.

The three you list are all very different players.

RF is the classic player straight from the womb.

RL clone with timing / precision / fluidity / ease of movement.

    Brilliant temperament — great career.

RN was more a boy with a man’s body.

Limited player who played to his strengths / rationed his efforts.

Klubber Lang would be his mentor — won the fight then the match.

Looking back to the 70’s — he is RT re-incarnated — same one club golfer style but much more successful.

One dimensional but effective even if the rumours regarding his strengthening / gym regime will always dog him.

ND was the “Nice Guy Eddie” in this company — back in the day.

Behind AM in the pecking order but with the hunger / appetite / energy to succeed.

He made himself great to the point that he was just about unbeatable.

AM has the talent to be the equal of this very different troika — just a case that he didn’t have the focus.

Or he did have the focus — but measured in months rather than years.

His team — not quite up to the job if your comments were their plan.

None of the three mentioned would have left a flaw of this scale in their game — it would have been eliminated one way or the other.

First serve / second serve performance differential of this magnitude = start in the head and work down.

The pantomime around who his coach was / would be / who would put up with the challenges surrounding him suggests that he was behind the curve regarding preparation for far too much of his career.

AM — 2nd serve apart — had the talent / ability of RF.

Possibly even more given his return range / spectrum.

However he did not have RF’s appetite / mental toughness / universal desire to succeed and that is what has in the end let him down. In contrast ND had it and slowly built his game to equal and then overcome the player that was RF.

Midnight to 6 am are not the same for our overseas posters.

Last night must’ve been the first moon howling in years, used to happen every night.

I think last night was a poster from years ago as well.

No mods back in the day either

    Was sickening.HH

Thanks for that list of moonhowlers. I had been trying to remember the name Kitalba for a few days now. Always wrote interesting stuff

I knew Sydney Tim reasonably well from when he arrived in Sydney – I think on the morning Celtic beat Man U- until I returned to Scotland in May 2008 the week after he got married. We used to meet up for a beer and a steak’n’mash in Scruffy Murphys most Tuesdays. He was incredibly passionate about Celtic and was also probabĺy more optimistic about CFC than I was. He certainly changed.

Not heard from him in years – hope he is well.
