Mulgrew call signals primacy ahead of Efe and Dedryck

612

With the arrival of Dedryck Boyata, Jozo Simunovic and Erki Sviatchenko over the last 12 months, Charlie Mulgrew must have wondered if he would be offered a new contract which his current deal expires next month. Especially so considering how little football he’s played in recent years.

An incoming manager would be excused for looking at his squad and thinking Charlie was surplus to requirements, but, as we have touched on in recent weeks, the story of Celtic’s defence is more complicated.

Erik has been an unqualified success, but Jozo missed most of the season through injury, while Dedryck and Efe Ambrose suffered unfortunate (cough) spells of form. Charlie is a few years past his Player of the Year prime, but he’s a reliable consistent defender, who I’d have in the team before Efe or (Euros bound) Dedryck.

We have a bloated squad and need to move players on, but it’s no surprise Brendan Rodgers let Charlie know he wanted him to stay. He’s the right player to occupy third or fourth spot in the central defensive roster.  We’ll wait and see if Jozo can grab second spot.

Midfielders? We’ve got half a million of them and most of them I like and want to keep. I know we need to get the number down to about 8 but that’s going to be some task. As far as I can see it might come to choosing names out of a hat in some cases to see who stays and who goes.

    Brown, Bitton, Johansen, Rogic

I mean of the 15 I’ve named, who do we let go to get the number down to about 8? There are 2 or 3 I would choose right away but I haven’t got a clue how to further refine the list. I’m glad I’m not Brendan and I bet you lot are glad I’m not too.

  8. Read an article on BR in which he talked about his prefered system of 4-3-3 saying that the guy in the middle of the 3 was the most important player in the team as he sat in front of the back 4 and dictated the tempo of the team…….BR played Joe Allan in that position,so if he does same again then i dont think we will be seeing the Strong defensive midfielder(VIC67 type) that many expect…….Tom Carroll of Spurs was mentioned as BR seems to really rate him….

Great to see the excitement about BR. I think he will do well.

But lets not take our eyes off what is most important: cleaning up the game in Scotland, or,at least, making sure that Celtic aren’t part of the problem.

I have said that I cannot continue to support a Celtic that, at the very least, acquiesces to the cheating, and that the Club must come out and say or do something about the state of the game in Scotland before the season starts, or I will not watch another Celtic game until they do.

BR’s appointment does make this difficult, as I think he will put together a fun team to watch…. but sometimes principles call for tough decisions.

So, my drop dead date is the start of the SPL season … August 6 (we all have to draw a line somewhere, and each of us will decide where that line is for themselves) So, about 10 weeks. it looks like I will have a few games to enjoy before then, and, hopefully, this will give those running Celtic enough time to do something to demonstrate that they have even a modicum of integrity. If not, for me, the game is a bogey.

Come on Celtic …. get the finger out and do the right thing!

Great. Thanks for your reply. Agree with most of whom you’ve chosen but not Allan or Rogic. While I would let the others go mainly because of poor passing ability, (Brown, Johansen) and unacceptable behaviour (Commons after Molde) we are leaving ourself open to lack of experience in the engine room of the team unless Brendan brings in better players to provide this. Brown has great leadership qualities but Brendan requires players who can accurately pass a ball. I don’t know if anyone remembers but Swansea were in the top four highest passing teams in Europe in Brendan’s final season there. Right up beside Pep’s Barca.

Of course expections of BR are sky high. No more than we would expect of one of the top managers in the UK.

This managerial appointment is almost beyond our wildest expectations and the people at our club instrumental in bringing him to Parkhead deserve praise.

It was brilliant to witness a crowd that most teams in Scotland can only dream about, turn out to welcome BR. It’s been a long time in coming but hopefully a manager that will really bring the thunder back to Paradise.

Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson has vowed to take action against any Ibrox supporter found guilty of disorder at the Scottish Cup final.

But the Robertson has reiterated the club’s belief that the finger of blame for the chaotic and violent scenes witnessed at Hampden on Saturday should still be pointed at the Hibernian fans who swarmed onto the pitch.

The Hibs faithful flooded on to the playing surface in their thousands to celebrate their first cup triumph in over a century.

But the jubilant scenes which followed the Leith side’s 3-2 win quickly turned sour when a section of the Easter Road support headed straight for the Rangers end to taunt and goad their rivals.

Several of the Light Blues’ players were targeted while fights broke out as Gers supporters also spilled onto the pitch.

Rangers issued a statement on Sunday night admitting a “tiny minority” of their fans had entered the playing surface but only to “protect our players and officials”.

However, speaking at the launch of the Club 1872 supporters group, Robertson said: “We don’t condone violence and we will wait to see what comes out of the investigations. We will deal with any Rangers fans in the appropriate manner.

“But we have to remember is was the Hibs fans who came over the wall. It was the Hibs’ fans who ran over the half-way line towards the Rangers fans. They provoked, they goaded, they taunted.

“In no shape or form do we condone any fan who came onto the pitch.

“But I don’t think we can get away from the fact that it was Hibs fans who came onto the park and provoked them.”

Easter Road chairman Rod Petrie has promised to work with the authorities to ensure “those who have transgressed face the consequences of their actions”.

Police Scotland – which has so far made more than a dozen arrests – has launched a criminal investigations into the shocking scenes, while the Scottish Football Association is also setting up a independent commission to examine the causes of the trouble.

But Rangers remain angry that the safety of their players and staff were put in jeopardy.

Now Robertson hopes the enquiries being carried out can also help to pinpoint a solution that guarantees there will be no repeat next season when his side return to Scotland’s top-flight.

“The scenes we saw afterwards were horrendous, disgraceful,” he said. “For the Hibs fans to come over the wall the way they did and for the attacks on our players and staff to happen the way it did, that is something no-one should experience when they are at their work.”

Rangers will do what they need to keep Mark Warburton – Stewart Robertson

    Jeff Holmes

Posted on Thursday 26 May 2016

Rangers will do what they have to do to keep hold of boss Mark Warburton, according to managing director Stewart Robertson.

Reports on Thursday morning claim the Ibrox side are so keen to ensure the Englishman is not tempted back down south that they are ready to offer him a new deal which doubles his wages.

Robertson knows the former Brentford boss’ stock is high after leading Rangers to the Ladbrokes Championship and Petrofac Training Cup during his first campaign in Glasgow.

And he admitted if the Light Blues do not act, it will only encourage rival clubs to enquire about the availability of the Rangers manager and his number two Davie Weir.

He said: “Mark and Davie have done a fantastic job. We want to see them both stay here for as long as we can.

“In any walk of life, if somebody is doing well they attract suitors. We need to address that so we will do what we have to do to make sure Mark and Davie stay here for a long time.”

Robertson hopes this week’s signing of midfielder Joey Barton from Burnley will also help persuade Warburton his long-term future should lie north of the border.

And he promised there will be further investment in the Ibrox squad in the coming weeks as Rangers limber up for the resumption of top-flight hostilities with Celtic.

“It’s a big statement of intent from the club,” he said.

“We always said the season just gone was about promotion. That was the key objective.

“We now need to add quality and some depth to the squad that is there to make sure we have a proper go at competing for the Premiership title next season.

“The club is on a journey and every single player we bring in we have be able to justify that there is value.

“There is no doubt Joey Barton brings huge value to Rangers and it will be the same with any other player we bring in, they need to represent value.

“There will be a few new faces coming in, hopefully before pre-season, because we know a few have left. We need to strengthen because we’re going up a level now.”

Clyde Sport understands that Barton’s weekly wage packet will contain as much as £20,000 but Robertson insisted that does not mean Rangers have put all their eggs in one basket.

“Our recruitment is very much done on a player-by-player basis,” he explained.

“Mark comes to us and lays out the value he believes his targets will bring to the team.

“We don’t have a budget as such. We wait for the players to be brought to us and assess whether we want to go for them and get a deal done.”

Defeat in last weekend’s Scottish Cup final to Hibernian also cost Rangers a return to European action.

With the club still losing around #5million a year, the cash generated by a run to the Europa League group stage could have come in handy.

However, Robertson insists missing out on the UEFA jackpot has not limited their ambitions for next season.

He said: “The club is being run very tightly. It’s been run on a very tight cost base.

“We have got the investors there and they are standing behind the club, to the extent of any funding that is required.

“The Europa League would have been a bonus but it was never part of the planning. If we’d got in great, it would have been a fantastic step forward for us.

“But we’re on plan so that’s fine and we will move forward to next season.”

Robertson was speaking after helping to launch Club 1872, a new united supporters’ group.

Formed following the merger of a number of smaller groups, Robertson believes the new body will allow the Ibrox faithful to speak with a “unified voice”.

He added: “The fans are there to hold this board to account and make sure what happened before doesn’t happen again. They are totally independent of the club but we will be working closely with th
