Mulgrew call signals primacy ahead of Efe and Dedryck

612

With the arrival of Dedryck Boyata, Jozo Simunovic and Erki Sviatchenko over the last 12 months, Charlie Mulgrew must have wondered if he would be offered a new contract which his current deal expires next month. Especially so considering how little football he’s played in recent years.

An incoming manager would be excused for looking at his squad and thinking Charlie was surplus to requirements, but, as we have touched on in recent weeks, the story of Celtic’s defence is more complicated.

Erik has been an unqualified success, but Jozo missed most of the season through injury, while Dedryck and Efe Ambrose suffered unfortunate (cough) spells of form. Charlie is a few years past his Player of the Year prime, but he’s a reliable consistent defender, who I’d have in the team before Efe or (Euros bound) Dedryck.

We have a bloated squad and need to move players on, but it’s no surprise Brendan Rodgers let Charlie know he wanted him to stay. He’s the right player to occupy third or fourth spot in the central defensive roster.  We’ll wait and see if Jozo can grab second spot.

Stuart Robertson championing the nonsense narrative that Sevco fans invaded the park to protect players being attacked. The footage I’ve seen from the Newco end clearly shows a huge mass of celebrating Hibs fans on the halfway line. Between 50 to 100 Hibs fans Goading Sevconians well after the players had departed and about the same number if not more Newcoers invading wanting a fight.

“At least 6 were assaulted. We may have more but are still finalising the club policy and instructions for others to say that they were. 11 was based on our initial instruction, but Miller’s wife put the kibosh on that. Others like Shiels were also too quick to tell family that they weren’t. These players will be fined. We’re scouring social media for other contradictions and once the full sweep is concluded we’ll release the final number. But definitely at least 6.”

Getting hibs thrown out of the euro place ,is the name of the game here . Wouldn,t surprise me if it worked .

I believe that the SFA has already indicated that it has no power to have anyone thrown out of Europe.

Given the precedent it might set, the SFA would be reluctant to have EUFA poking its nose into Scottish Football affairs. Currant buns will just have to accept no Euro money this year.

After the last few days it might just be dawning on THEM that a low profile is the best course of action.

Ronny Deila`s team, in the top division, gained more points, won more games, lost fewer games, scored more goals and conceded fewer goals than did Warburton`s Sevco in the second tier.

Who was Manager of the Year? Who was shown the door?

    What a country.

PS Does anyone share my view that our expectations of Brendan are maybe a wee bit high?

    ————–

I was going to write that! Just been to busy to get on CQN.

A well documented Deila fan, me. No manager has worked out how to break down a team with 10 men behind the ball and win 100% of the time. Heck, we were successful with that tactic against the best team on the planet at the time with a Tony Watt goal.

To expect to achieve results and play the Celtic way in the SPFL over the season is unrealistic. I’ll come back to you on how good Brendan is when we reach the end of the season and compare league points, goals scored, goals conceded, winning margin, if he beats Ronnie’s record then he truly will have had a remarkable first season.

Cup successes of any variety would be a bonus.

It was a Rhetorical Question, wasn’t it?

  18. Thunder Road on

I see the narrative starting already that Brendan Rodgers will be judged on what he does in the Champs League!

It was used as a stick to beat Ronny so why not Brendan eh?

Surely now there’s a team playing at Snakemountain this season in our league then suddenly nothing is tainted and winning the title is the priority?

I think they do it to try and take whatever enjoyment they can from us.

They have had to sit there and watch us doing 2, 3, 4, 5 in a row and have been powerless to stop it and they are spewing at the sight of us racking up title after title and the only thing they can try to do is pathetic attempts to diminish any success we get.

Won’t be long before Brendan is being told he must win the treble as well.

Its always rankled with me that this goes on and in some ways it actually makes it even sweeter when we do unfurl another flag instead of them taking the gloss off it because their pain is oozing out of every rotten pore.

Had a look back at a few seasons in the dark decade that was the 90’s and low n behold……93-94……huns actually only win 22 out of 44 league games, drawing 14 and losing 8, yet because we were so bad and only managed to win 15, draw 20 and lose 9 we were languishing 4th.

They were pumped out of Europe as soon as they started by Levski Sofia but apparently it was a bonus then to be involved and perhaps didn’t matter?

Along with an awful league record, it certainly didn’t stop the cardigan getting manager of the year…..maybe the votes were won because of the cups?

Quite a contrast to Ronny’s 1st season that year really as the huns won the league cup and were denied a treble by Dundee Utd, while Ronny was quite possibly denied a treble by a shocking bit of cheating in the semi v Inverness……despite only losing 17 goals in 38 games, he was overlooked for the same award walter had bestowed on him.

94-95, we are gash again……4th in the league, winning only 11 games.

Huns actually lose 7 out of 36(worse record than Ronny) and get pumped out of Europe in the qualifying round after getting beat home n away by AEK Athens and although we won the Scottish cup and got beat by Raith in the League cup final(sorry for bringin that up) the cardigan still gets manager of the year?

Those were glory years though eh?

Some kind of wonderful time that it didn’t matter what state other teams were in or if there was even a tiny bit of progress was made in Europe.

Never stop loving every minute of this Bhoys because they hate every second of it.

Every time i see those benchmarks being notched for us i feel their pain.

Your right about RD’s record in the league but taking Europe, cups and the sideways style of play it drove supporters away in numbers.

I have noticed that the msm didn’t take long to telling us that Brendan will be judged by what he does in europe.

Obviously the huns arny gonna give us a challenge then.

As for the treble, he should play the weans and fringe players in the league cup, that would stop all talk of the treble in it’s tracks, and the utter joy when we win it will be all the sweeter :-)

We’ve had negative reporting since we were founded along with negative refereeing, it’ has always been something we had to deal with.

Reading some of the older posters Big Jock knew how to deal with it, hopefully Brendan will be the streetwise manager we have been waiting for since…not forgetting Martin o’Neil.

I do get your point though, the smsm went for the jugular with RD, by feck, it will hopefully come back to haunt them.
