Multi-season consequences of Hearts win

158

We can debate which result last night would have been best for Celtic’s chances of winning the league was, although we don’t have enough information to answer the question completely yet.  Forward projections is a different story.

Win or lose the league, Celtic will remain solvent without a drastic cut to expenditure, as will Hearts.  Not so much Newco.  Winning the league would almost certainly see them progress to the Champions League proper without having to go through qualification (the same is not true for Celtic and Hearts).   For an organisation which has been subsidised by loans and capital injections practically every year since its inception, that would be a rare respite.

Losing the league means their current budget is unsustainable.  That will have an impact on what happens next season and beyond.  Last night’s Hearts win will have multi-season consequences.

    I don’t normally hold a grudge for 23 years. :)

I suspect John Lawrence took less time to forgive Roger Hynd for costing him a knighthood whe he missed a sitter in the 1967 Cup Winners’ Cup final.

Anyway, league is still there for the winning.

  2. What a lot of people tend to forget re that 2002/03 season is that we signed Javier Sanchez Broto from Livingston. He had a nightmare on his debut and we all wondered what we had signed. He then went on to demonstrate that he was an absolutely brilliant keeper.

The tragedy was that he couldn’t play for us in Europe. Why? Because for the only time in their lives Livi had also qualified for Europe and he had played for them in an early UEFA Cup qualifier and so was cup tied. Had he played in Seville there was no doubt we would have won.

In many respects a unifying factor for a whole host of diverse communities in North London. Jeremy Corbyn’s constituency too both as a Labour MP and now an Independent MP. Long time supporter into the bargain.

  25. my tuppence worth…Hearts have been winning by a single goal in most recent matches, and nothing to suggest they will play any differently in the next two games. A single goal victory v Motherwell gives them +6, a two goal margin vs the huns gets us back to -4, both us & Hearts getting single goal wins midweek leaves us needing a 2 goal winning margin on the last day to win the league….no sweat!

  28. Folk always forget that during Charlie Nicholas 1st and 2nd terms at Celtic, we had upwards of 30 o 35,000 crowds at Parkhead, with 30% of every home attendance allowed in for free.

And fans weren’t even paying £1 to enter the ground.

So that leaves 70% of the gate receipts to be split down the middle with the opposition.

So 35% of gate receipts of every home game during the Kelly & White era went to Celtic.

How much of the 35% went to police, staff, and then the manager and players, then the board????

And yet Lord Nimmo Smith still found that EBTs did not provide any sporting advantage , leaving Rangers immune to any sporting sanctions , such as the stripping of titles.

The commission was live while the Tax case against Rangers was at a stage which allowed the Commission to “proceed on the basis that the EBT arrangements were lawful.”

It remains , for me , a scandal and a blot on Scottish football’s name.

At the very least the Commission should has been reconvened and asked to review its findings in light of the final Supreme Court decision that EBTs were disguised remuneration and therefore illegal , in the civil but not criminal sense , and therefore subject to taxation.
