My only flag’s a Celtic flag

492

I get that football thrives where it is a manifestation of tribalism. Across Europe and beyond club flags offer people more affinity with than any national emblem.

But, with one or two exceptions, it’s a largely innocuous brand. We get to wear tribal garb and indulge in our rituals without onerous economic consequence. The echo from the Great Recession, which we are still hearing today, has been a lesson in what can happen when a tribe perceives that its relative position has diminished.

That perception often bears absolutely no relation to reality, but widespread economic illiteracy makes us look like a primitive animals.

My only flag’s a Celtic flag.  You are my only tribe.

  1. No matter what side of the Trump/Clinton argument you come from I think we can say that neither of them are a shining example of humanity or offer a genuinely brighter hope for the future.

Democracy was the loser when they became the candidates.Sad.

    Everyone’s a loser baby,that’s true.

Hurry back Celtic and give us something uplifting to talk about.

  2. A lovely wee example of the sterling work of the MSM continuing.

Was out for a walk today with a couple of former colleagues and we walked from Strathclyde Park up to Rosebank, along the Clyde Walkway. As one of the guys was a former season ticket holder at Ibrox (one of those fans who is never a hun) I joked that we could have a late lunch in the Popinjay and that would help wee Bazza a bit with his tax bill. “His tax bill?” enquired my mate. “Yeah, you know, paying the tax on his EBT”. “But I thought they were declared legal” says he. After explaining the ruling that had taken place in the Supreme Court in Edinburgh he simply looked at me and asked “Are you sure? Is this one of your Timmy wind-ups?”

This is an educated, well read guy who had no idea of the current state of the EBT/HMRC case. But obviously in the media he reads/listens to he has not had any info at all. What the hell do these media clowns think will be the eventual outcome of the release of the final findings on this case, assuming HMRC win it?

  3. Jill Stein , the US green candidiate who would have been a brilliant president endored Trump as being the better choice. Things are changing in the world -the warmongers may have had their day . Hilary might soon be languishing in jail.

Can’t say too much about what you are talking about but can say this.

Before Rangers went bust they did contact the now President Elect. You may have heard that in his business he surrounds himself with the brightest and best people.

Unfortunately for the Govanites this at the most senior level includes a bunch of Irish American New Yorkers who happen to be Celtic daft.

Some might say they had a bit of fun stringing them along.

  5. RAY WINSTON oops that’s what I get for trying to Americanise myself with dates in the calendar !

    Good Evening.

The election of Donald Trump as America’s 45th President is the result of so-called democracy in action, yet I believe it also represents the failure of the American democratic system in particular and it represents a failure of democracy in general.

I don’t say that because I could not, and never would have voted for Trump, but because I believe that more and more the general electorate of this country, America and many other democracies are simply fed complete and utter bullshit by the candidates and the media who choose to back or “report on” this political candidate or that.

Of the two candidates, I personally would have voted for Clinton yet I am not a fan of hers and am not at all certain about her political credentials or bona fides.

Equally, I am not at all convinced that Trump ever intends to fulfill some of the campaign promises he has made over the past few months (thank God) and he strikes me as no more than an opportunist which hardly makes him unique amongst politicians.

What bothers me most is that it would seem to be easier and easier for politicians of all hues to make repeated ridiculous claims, spout inaccuracy after inaccuracy, break promise after promise and to be permanently contrary and contradictory in what they say to the electorate and to the public in general — and there is no honest, unbiased press which seeks to hold them to account.

Take, as an example, the claims about the Clintons and their foundation.

I have now heard numerous late night debates involving different people some of whom say that the Clintons milked the foundation dry, and others who say that these claims have been completely debunked, are wholly inaccurate and proven to be so, but that the allegations remain and get repeated as if true time after time.

Both these stances cannot be true, yet there they are, repeated day after day, with the public caught in the middle.

In this country, during the Brexit vote we received inaccurate claim after inaccurate claim leading up to the vote, and more or less immediately afterwards the politicians turn round and say “yes we lied and we can admit that now.”

I recall the story of the late Mo Mowlem who visited the home of a wee woman who said she was worried that if the Tories were elected the NHS would should down completely and the woman would not receive a much needed operation.

Mowlem, went back to see the woman privately and told her not to worry because despite the fact that the Labour party were openly saying that a Tory victory would immediately result in an NHS shutdown, the truth was that none of them believed this was true because they knew the NHS would still be there but administered differently. Accordingly, the woman shouldn’t worry.

In short, the campaigning was dishonest.

It is now the norm for all political parties to be dishonest in my opinion, and that politicians no longer stand in elections to serve or to provide “Government of the people by the people for the people” but to promote their own self interests and to advance their own career in politics and in business.

In achieving this objective, they are backed by a press which is controlled by a few, is highly compromised, lacks integrity and objectivity in the main, and has been shown to stoop to the lowest level of behaviour in their attempts to create scandalous and sesnationalist news.

In America, you either vote Democrat or Republican. While you can technically vote independent, when it comes to the President, you really have a choice of two. Accordingly if the press smears one successfully then there is a good chance people will switch to the other.

Allowing this circle of deception and inaccuracy to become the norm hardly represents proper or admirable democracy.

The professional political classes now rely on the press to do their bidding by way of supporting them or attacking the opposition with little regard to truth.

As a result, truth and honesty become immediate victims, as do the electorate, but the real victim is proper democracy which relies on enfranchised voters freely casting a vote based real knowledge surrounding the candidates and the issues.

Sadly, we now appear to be permanently divorced from that version of democracy and live in a world where deception and dishonesty by the political classes is not only acceptable but encouraged.

This entire electoral process represents an abject failure of what the process is meant to be, and it brings no credit whatsoever to either candidate or the USA as a whole.

As for the rest of us, there is only one place where you will be oblivious to the consequences of this political failure, and that is in Craiglang!

From what I’ve seen Clinton has received a majority of the popular vote but the electoral college system hasn’t reflected that. It’s happened before to the Democrat’s benefit.

    It’s not a great system.

The msm in the States did their level 5 best to destroy Trump, they failed big time, I wonder why ?

Maybes the people are really no that stupid, maybes the people don’t want more of the same, maybes the people are hoping for a glimmer of change, who knows, but the mainstream to a hell of a beating yesterday.

I personally doubt there will be much or any change, but if he does nothing else other than foster positive relations with the likes of Russia instead of wanting to start a war with them I for one will be delighted.

She was about 400K short of the popular vote, but for she had the vote in the east and west coasts where there are a whean of people in comparison to the rest of the country, it’s little wonder, but she still didn’t get more votes at the end of the day.

Not for or against one side or the other , but I think this is quite amusing….

    To Bombay

    A traveling circus came

    They brought an intelligent elephant

    And Hillie was her name

    One dark night

    She slipped her iron chain

And off she ran to Hindustan

    And was never seen again

Hillie the Elephant packed her trunk

And said goodbye to the circus

Off she went with a trumpety-trump

    Trump, trump, trump

Hillie the Elephant packed her trunk

And trundled back to the jungle

Off she went with a trumpety-trump

    Trump, trump, trump

    Night by night

She danced to the circus band

When Hillie was leading the big parade

She looked so proud and grand

    No more tricks

    For Hillie to perform

They taught her how to take a bow

And she took the crowd by storm

Hillie the Elephant packed her trunk

And said goodbye to the circus

Off she went with a trumpety-trump

    Trump, trump, trump

Hillie the Elephant packed her trunk

And trundled back to the jungle

Off she went with a trumpety-trump

    Trump, trump, trump

The head of the herd was calling

    Far, far away

They met one night in the silver light

    On the road to Mandalay

Hillie the Elephant packed her trunk

And said goodbye to the circus

Off she went with a trumpety-trump

    Trump, trump, trump

Hillie the Elephant packed her trunk

And trundled back to the jungle

Off she went with a trumpety-trump

    Trump, trump, trump

Hillie the Elephant packed her trunk

And said goodbye to the circus

Off she went with a trumpety-trump

    Trump, trump, trump

Hillie the Elephant packed her trunk

And trundled back to the jungle

Off she went with a trumpety-trump

    Trump, trump, trump

  19. Hang on. It happened to Al Gore, so it was to the Republican’s benefit, not the Democrats.

Just imagine if it happened to Trump. Would he have accepted the result , or claim the election was rigged?

  20. The establishment are not getting their way in recent polling. How dare lesser ordinary working people oppose the establishment and political elite. They should do what they are told to do, after all we ( the establishment) are far better educated than them.

How will the establishment fight back ? They will manipulate the voting system , they will gerrymander the system, they will put more restrictions on who is allowed to vote.

They may even think of allowing school-kids to vote if they calculate it will help them. Oh wait a minute.

I think it is a landslide for Trump, all the polls were telling us HRC was miles ahead, the fact he won is a landslide imo.

There was videos on Youtube earlier of people voting and their votes were getting flipped to Clinton, hundreds of countys were down due to this, the surprise for me is he won, a few will be getting their baws booted me thinks.

  23. THE EXILED TIM on 9TH NOVEMBER 2016 6:22 PM

I agree with you, when polling agencies right to the wire suggest that Clinton had a 96% chance of winning then the differential must be regarded as a landslide.

    Anyway,

On Saturday night myself and others are sleeping out in the cold with a view to raising some dough for the benefit of people who don’t give a kipper’s dick whether Trump won or not!

The Celtic Charity Foundation is hoping to raise enough money to support 250 locally disadvantaged families and a whole host of others including the homeless and those who just want a roof over their heads and a bed to sleep in.

Can I just a say a huge thankyou to those who have donated and sponsored me already. Your generosity has been outstanding and is greatly appreciated.

  25. Trump won fair and square. He was selected as the Republican Candidate and President-Elect through entirely democratic processes. I think it’s unfair to prejudge his Presidency before he even takes his seat at the White House. Lets see what he is able to deliver or not as the case may be. You know i think he might just make a relative success of it….Love him of loathe him, it is astonishing what he has achieved.
