Narrative is clear: Celtic improvement is profound

1001

When you and I write, whether you are aware of it or not, there’s always a narrative.  Behind the words the subtext explains why we think a game was won or lost, why events on the park reinforce our world view, or, for some, just that they are angry people.

For most, our narrative is bound by the constraints of realistic parameters, although some are so afflicted by a heavily prejudiced world view that no amount of evidence to the contrary would convince them, for example, that they are being led by the nose by charlatans.

As the game drew to a conclusion last night, this troubled me.  I was proud of the way Celtic played.  They attacked a team from one of the top leagues in a way we’ve not seen since Juventus visited in 2001.  It was glorious and gutsy, skilful and dramatic.  But with 92 minutes on the clock, it was heading towards defeat.  No matter the circumstances, defeat binds any narrative as a failure, glorious or otherwise.  It didn’t feel like failure, but this was how we would remember this game.

John Guidetti’s 93rd minute equaliser changed the result and created some memories, but the underlying narrative would stand, with or without that goal: the improvement in Celtic since our August debacle is as profound as anything we have witnessed in 49 years.

Delighted to announce that our treble winning captain, Tom Boyd, will be attending CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  We also have big Packy, wee Joe and conventionally-sized Tommy Coyne.  And Archie Macpherson’s going to talk about the transformation which got underway 50 years ago that week!

Fill your boots at what will be a great celebration of our club and heritage, with a wee song or two from Patricia Ferns, and you’ll also help to build a school kitchen in Malawi for kids who often go without a proper meal.  For tickets and details, email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Congratulations to the SPFL, Hamilton Accies, Georgios Samaras, Celtic and Scottish football fans for last month’s Goal of the Month award, which was won by Jay Beatty for his strike at New Douglas Park.  Up with this sort of thing.

    hello bud.

i took a trip to the corner just after 7 last night in the hope of seeing CRC. I did meet PaddyBhoy and Dena29, which was a nice wee hello.

Funny thing was AndyR53 holding up a bit of cardboard saying something like

    “AndyR53 looking for CowieBhoy”

when i couldnt find the bold CRC, i decided t head into the game as I wanted to see the GB Tifo, hurridly telling 33 year old nephew, mon lets hurry up in.

So we gets in, its half seven, i thinkquick pie, bet, and seat.

bg fella says “whats your hurry kick aff is 5 past eight”

Another majestic European occasion at Celtic Park – and the outcome was just about right. A fair result over the piece.

Exciting times ahead under Ronny Deila with the majority of our current squad. Eight players aged 25 or under on the pitch for Celtic last night. And the progress since our last European game is glaring.

Not much has been made of it, but there were 15 passes in the build up to the first Celtic goal, composure all over the pitch in that move. The third goal was a cracker as well. The pass and the finish both sublime.

As I said, great times ahead for Celtic.

Sorry, not buying that, he failed as a manager at a lower league English club….and we’re to believe his tactical assessments of a European tie between 2 giants.

Oh aye, and there’s the chucking it at ibrokes, never forgiven in my eyes for that.

    He is an irrelevance.

What is more amusing is that bar the two ex pros in the studio every other professional or ex pro asked about the game said it was excellent.

My world view of our custodians love affair with the Old Firm is well documented. As is our silence. The conclusion I have come too is that they are indeed charlatans. The biggest bare faced charlatans in our history and their silence confirms it as does yours on this subject Paul67

  11. At 0-2 for Inter last night, I began to feel that we were heading for disaster and then I noticed Brownie gesturing to all the players indicating that we had to begin to fight back. How they responded to that call and every man played his part.

Other things I will recall for many a day was the performance from the GB. What a tremendous artistic display and their continuous support in song of the team must have helped those on the park.

Our support for Craig Gordon was a truly Celtic moment. He will know now if he did not know before that he is valued by us.

Someone else mentioned the young ones as they emerged from the game. Just to see the look on their faces, many of them living the European dream for the first time, was truly amazing. Hopefully they will have many fond memories of other similar nights in the years to come. If they have only half of those that I have over sixty years, then they are about to experience something special.

Hamilton Tim. The heart stood the test in that atmosphere. Only complaint today is a sore throat and pain in the back when the guy next to me nearly crushed me to death as we celebrated John Guidetti’s goal.

Wee Jay. Well done wee mhan. We are all proud of you.

  12. Afternoon all

Enjoyed watching that Roy Croppie put up. The big brunette who was snickering every time we scored looks as though she would be fun at a night out. Or indeed a night in.

he wasnt a homer for sure, and he did favorite the bigger league team on a number of niggly fouls.

particular couple, missed a penalty for us, and didnt play advantage as izzy broke toward the box.

i couldnt believe we were 2-0 down, out of nothing, i notied broonie giving it heaids up to all the bhoys, and a few gees up.

the will to win is back, its there, from that point on , i thought we battled magnificently.

other key point, when gordon loses the goal, bitton came all the way back and gave him the paton the back he needed.

i thought the team spirit was all over the park.

and the 2 new bhoys, well they look like they always been there.

it was a great night, and we deserved a win.

daft point, but i thought their keeper looked more nervous and capable of a rightblunder than gordon ever could.

maybe he will reciprocate in the san siro

  22. great night, still hoarse thought we were brilliant at times. Criag Gordon made to bad mistakes but without him we would not be in the last 32. With him we still have a chance of the last 16. I too am looing forward to the 2nd leg and the next few games. Lets hope we keep improving bringing in 2 centre half’s who want to play for us is a must..

  23. In the life of a football club, as in our own lives, there are many trials and tribulations and, if we are lucky and have good habits, periods of success.

The wonderful moments of success at Celtic Football Club are etched deep in our souls and there is a warm glow whenever we think back, read back, or as is more common nowadays, view back on all the many platforms that are now available.

What we must never forget is, that over the 127 years of our history, there have been many periods when success has eluded us. However we have always found a new path a emerged back into the limelight.

Since the Fergus intervention in the nineties, we have tasted more good than bad, although never reaching the heights of the halcyon days between 1966 & the early seventies, when European success
