Narrative is clear: Celtic improvement is profound

1001

When you and I write, whether you are aware of it or not, there’s always a narrative.  Behind the words the subtext explains why we think a game was won or lost, why events on the park reinforce our world view, or, for some, just that they are angry people.

For most, our narrative is bound by the constraints of realistic parameters, although some are so afflicted by a heavily prejudiced world view that no amount of evidence to the contrary would convince them, for example, that they are being led by the nose by charlatans.

As the game drew to a conclusion last night, this troubled me.  I was proud of the way Celtic played.  They attacked a team from one of the top leagues in a way we’ve not seen since Juventus visited in 2001.  It was glorious and gutsy, skilful and dramatic.  But with 92 minutes on the clock, it was heading towards defeat.  No matter the circumstances, defeat binds any narrative as a failure, glorious or otherwise.  It didn’t feel like failure, but this was how we would remember this game.

John Guidetti’s 93rd minute equaliser changed the result and created some memories, but the underlying narrative would stand, with or without that goal: the improvement in Celtic since our August debacle is as profound as anything we have witnessed in 49 years.

Delighted to announce that our treble winning captain, Tom Boyd, will be attending CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  We also have big Packy, wee Joe and conventionally-sized Tommy Coyne.  And Archie Macpherson’s going to talk about the transformation which got underway 50 years ago that week!

Fill your boots at what will be a great celebration of our club and heritage, with a wee song or two from Patricia Ferns, and you’ll also help to build a school kitchen in Malawi for kids who often go without a proper meal.  For tickets and details, email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Congratulations to the SPFL, Hamilton Accies, Georgios Samaras, Celtic and Scottish football fans for last month’s Goal of the Month award, which was won by Jay Beatty for his strike at New Douglas Park.  Up with this sort of thing.

Accurate attendances are hard to find in Italy. I have watched all of their European games this season .Stadium looked less than half full..Their official website is still offering packages, deals and tickets for next week.No way will it be a sell out .Serious crisis in Italy , serious unemployment , serious poverty .Interest in football is declining – poor quality football, crumbling death trap stadiums, corruption , politics , violence , the fear of violence etc etc.

Your analysis regarding Inter was spot on.

I don;t know if you remember earlier in the week I said after you mentioned they would attack because they had a poor defence I said I would bet 4-3. I can tell you I was panicking at half time because I didn’t!

Correct big man. I will speak to you Sunday when the wee man is there and you will be less likely to lamp me or give me a lecture.

  7. I rushed out of work, picked up friends and family, jumped a taxi, drank some beer, walked along the gallowgate, sang some songs, hugged my son, sang walk on, hugged my brother, held my head (once then twice), screamed pass it for f*** sake pass it, they passed it and scored, and again, hugged my son, hugged my brother, hugged my wife, had looked away at their third. WTF!! second half that lasted for ever, was it the songs, the atmosphere, loved every second, pointed out to those rats sneaking out that the game was not done, couldn’t believed we had scored, took forever getting home, didn’t care, up to back of one, no voice in work (not great when teaching) still got a smile on my face. thanks Celtic, thanks Ronnie and hail hail to everyone.

  8. jamesgang-just seen Sammi’s message to Jay on SSN, well done to Hamilton Accies, great gesture.

Loved this post – your story about the scarf swapping totally summed up for me the honour and privilege of being part of the “Celtic family”. Very moving post. Lovely experience for your son and his friend. Lucky wee Bhoys.

My wee Bhoy needs to understand that it’s not ‘normal’ to have a season seat 10 rows behind ronny. This is my first ever and I’m 45 years old. I Am that excited Bairn every time I walk up the steps and the view explodes before my eyes.

Eddieinkirkmichael wrote about that feeling in here a wee while back. He was poetic in his words.

I can’t imagine your wee mhan ever taking it for granted- your enthusiasm is bound to rub off. I took my younger son to his first game when he was 4 and he was sitting beside me last night, aged 20, about to have a seizure from the excitement!! They don’t lose the thrill!!!

Another day, another tiresome Rangers Trust press release that brings our club and our fans into an issue that has sod all to do with us …

You know what I think? These people are obsessed.

    http://www.onfieldsofgreen.com/an-obsession-with-celtic/

    ————————————————————————————————————–

I must admit that I do not always fully ‘support’ all of the writings on your blog, although I rarely find an article that does not have me ‘nodding in agreement’ at some point.

Just so this one – the RST, like almost all the satellites that have been launched to orbit the ‘dead star’ called Rangers FC, is an obnoxious ‘head in the sand’ rabble.

Everything the utter consists of defending the indefensible’, to one degree, or, another.

You are right to highlight the ‘night and day’ difference between the RST and The Celtic Trust, when it comes down to how they choose to deal with the press.

However, and it is a big however, you say they don’t undermine the operation of the club – that is because they are not allowed to undermine the operation of the club – from all I have seen and read about them, they would very much like to ‘bring the club to heel’ to their agenda.

There are part of the various groups and individuals that I refer to as ‘game theorists’ – they ‘talk the talk’, promote the utopian ideal, however put the in a position to run the club on a practical basis – they could never ‘walk the walk’.

Running any organisation, indeed running your own life, is a road full of comprimises, half-done deals and ‘cutting your cloth to suit’; and if you are sensible, you NEVER ‘put all your eggs in the one basket’

The Trust’s constant sniping at the board on some issues, shows an immaturity in their thought process and their realisation about how the ‘big bad’ world functions.

I continue to be interested in what you write about, and, what you write about it !!!!!

    Folks

Hugh MacDonald is one of us- he was in my class at Primary School, for what that’s worth!

He is an excellent journalist who has a distinctive and thought-provoking writing style. I’m sure he is sincere in his view of last night’s match – and I don’t always agree with his point of view by the way!

Is Stuart Armstrong the first player to score in both his home and away debuts? If not does anyone know of other players who have achieved such a feat?
