Nawrocki, good in air, passes through the lines, focussed

222

Celtic confirmed the signing of German-born Poland youth international central defender Maik Nawrocki (22) this morning.  The player emerged through the Werder Bremen youth system and featured only seven times before going on loan two weeks after his 20th birthday to Warta Poznan in the Polish topflight.

He spent half a season at Warta where he made only two starts and one substitute appearance before Legia Warsaw made their move and took him on loan for the 2021-22 season.  Still 20, this was his breakthrough season and Legia made the transfer permanent last summer.  The player has made 43 starts and four substitute appearances in senior football, well below our typical harvesting point in the mid-60s.

Zbyszek, our man in Warsaw, firmly endorsed him.  Maik is “great in the air…. Focussed on the game… Good at passing through the lines”.  Legia were fending off bids for him from Galatasaray that were close to double what we paid them for Josip Juranovic two years ago, indicating how much more they value Maik.

And wait for it……….. he’s two footed.

Our settled central defensive pairing has a clear hierarchy.  Cameron Carter-Vickers rivals the great Virgil in status, while Carl Starfelt sits somewhere beneath the clouds.  This is harsh on Carl.  Both players are right footed, but Carl carries the burden of playing on the left, presumably because this suits the pair’s merits and weaknesses.

With Cameron not yet match fit, I would expect to see Maik on the left in the games against Wolves and Athletic Bilbao, allowing Carl to play on his natural side.  Brendan Rodgers has not worked with any of these players.  It will be interesting to see who he selects for the important games in September we discussed earlier.

Virgil was a week shy of his 22nd birthday and had started 50 matches when he joined Celtic.  Maybe the sweet spot for central defenders is a little lower than mid-60s.

Welcome to Celtic, Maik.

  1. Good morning from a damp drizzly North Staffs. Not sure all the excitement about newclub losing a friendly – we lost 6 to Yokohama.

Good to see the energy companies continue to cash in on people’s struggle to afford the basics.

  2. Can’t understand the argument about attendances at friendlies – does is count towards the preseason trophy.

  3. R.I.P, SINEAD.

What a fantastic lady and what a fantastic voice. I always found her voice to be very ” HAUNTING”….Truly great.

My DA’s favourite Irish Reb Song was ” The FOGGY DEW”. He always claimed that he first heard the Song in 1957/58 while doing his National Service in Egypt.

I dont know when ” The Foggy Dew” was written, as there are differing years/versions offered up ( From 1804 thru to 1940 ). His Pals in his regiment were all CELTIC Men and apparently it was sung by them while they served in Egypt.

My favourite version of the Song has always been SINEADS with The Dubliners from when I first heard it some time after 1995 ?

    Sinéad O’Connor ..

Early life. O’Connor was born in the Cascia House Nursing Home at 13 Pembroke Road, Dublin, on 8 December 1966. She was named Sinéad after Sinéad de Valera, the mother of the doctor presiding over the delivery, Eamonn de Valera, and Bernadette in honour of Saint Bernadette of Lourdes.

My DA MAY have been aware of the ” FOGGY DEW” before his National Service in 1957, however I think it was his Celtic mates in his Regiment in Egypt who MAY have taught him the Lyrics in full ?

  5. Charlie Tully loved to play up to the crowd and loved nothing more than hearing the crowd roar their approval as he left another embarrassed defender trailing in his wake. Nothing typifies the skill and impudence of Tully better than his goal in the Scottish Cup at Falkirk on 21 February 1953. With Celtic awarded a corner the Irishman surveyed the scene in the penalty box before whipping the ball straight into the back of the net. The perplexed referee insisted that Charlie Tully had taken the kick from outside the corner markings and ordered a retake. Charlie Tully duly obliged and again whipped the ball straight into the net – goal! This goal from a corner was no fluke as Charlie Tully repeated this feat in an international for Northern Ireland against England.

Celtic player Charlie Tully was on good form at Glasgow University’s Charities Day in 1952, when a bunch of students captured him and held him to ransom.

As our picture shows, he was beaming broadly as the prank unfolded, happy to help the young learners raise some much needed dosh for local good causes.

“The skirl of the bagpipes, blasts from bugles and whistles, and the raucous screech from ricketies warned the good-natured Glasgow folks of things to come,” said our newspaper on the day.

Tully had moved to Parkhead in June 1948, from his hometown side Belfast Celtic and his cheeky personality and penchant for publicity made him one of the first ‘celebrity footballers’ long before Best and Beckham hit the headlines.

During his time at the Parkhead club, according to the Celtic Wiki, you could buy Tully ties, Tully cocktails and Tully ice lollies….

    ……………….

I have got a 45rpm Record by Charlie Tully, on which he sings TWO Celtic Songs, one of which was written by Charlie.

the songs are ” The Bhoys in White and Green” and “CELTIC are the Greatest Team”.

On both Songs its just Charlie singing and there is also the sound of someone playing a Squeeze Box.

Some years ago in Bairds Bar, both Bertie Auld and Wullie O’Neill confirmed to me that Charlie always sang songs on the Team Bus/Train.

They also had NO IDEA that Charlie had made a Record, so they were both stunned when I showed it to them one evening.

There is NO YEAR Printed on the Label of this Record, but in one of the songs, Charlie sings about Jock Stein being the Celtic manager, but he makes NO REFERENCE to winning the Big Cup in Lisbon.

So I must ASSUME that he made this Record between 1965 and 1967, BEFORE Celtics win in Lisbon as SURELY he would have sung about Lisbon ?

Sadly the Charlie Tully Record that I have is no longer playable.

The Label states ” IRISH RECORDINGS”.

    R.I.P. Charlie, Bertie and Wullie.

  8. I believe that Charlie Tully MUST have been the very FIRST Celtic player to cut a Record ?

Certainly BEFORE FRANK HAFFEY and/or obviously Wee JINKY.

  10. Last night we again witnessed referee cheating of the highest order Our club are forking out millions on quality players to compete in various competitions , yet the game changers are in the men in black . Our board surely see what is coming from these mibs in a season that is of great importance to the club they are game changers . I hope michael or peter have voiced there concerns over the favouritism shown towards the club across the city . And they should make a start with making an example of sevco fan McLean .

  11. Big Jimmy Foggy Dew is a song celebrating The Easter Rising of 1916.

It was written in 1919 by a young Catholic Priest from Co. Antrim,
