Need to find edge to match United

935

Dundee United and Celtic will both have their minds on longer term outcomes than tomorrow’s Premiership game at Tannadice.  For Neil Lennon, it will surely be another opportunity to expose some of his development players to the rigors of first team action.  For Jackie McNamara this is a test before arguably their biggest game of the season, next week’s Scottish Cup semi-final.

United are six points off the pace in the neck-and-neck battle between Aberdeen and Motherwell in re Best of the Rest race but face both these teams at home before the end of the season.  United’s potentially bigger challenge are the home and away games against the champions.  Only the top three are guaranteed European football, so the potential of European revenue, added to the prize more differential (circa £100k per place) will sharpen minds.

For Celtic, the challenge will be to find the edge their opponents will have for tomorrow.  I’d look to Liam Henderson, and maybe a couple of his former development squad team mates for this.

We’re well accustomed the nationalist and xenophobic excesses of the UK media but Germany appears shocked at the two biggest selling UK dailies use of the word “schwein” to describe Bastian Schweinsteiger.  Anyone who grew up during the decades when war movies dominated our TVs will know the racial context loaded onto this particular term, as it was used in Germany in the 30s and 40s.

Bayern’s ban on the Mirror and Sun is an appropriate rebuff, safe in the knowledge that no Bayern fans will continue to consume news about their club from either newspaper.

  1. So sad about margot macdonald, an absolute gem of a woman.

Driven her about in ma taxi quite a few times and wi hand on heart she was the most genuine politician I have ever come across true to her beliefs to the end, if only scotland had a few more msp’s like her.

My condolences to jim and all their family.

    RIP

    MARGOT.

RIP Margo, god speed darling, did not always agree

with you, but ya were a dish in yer day.

  4. I generally mistrust politicians.

The biggest compliment that I could pay Margot MacDonald is that I thought here to be honest and trustworthy.

A great loss for those close to her and those that she represented.

The one that always makes me cringe is the ‘he’s got great feet for such a big lad’.

Lets take Ibrahimovic – the implication seems to be that he reached 6ft5 and decided to start playing football.

Unless he was 5ft when he was born they really ought to ditch that one…

  6. RIP Margo MacDonald.

A lot of people will be the poorer for not having her fight their corner.

  7. I recall time when Margo MacDonald served me in her bar – The Hoolets Nest

in Blantyre – when I used to take a drink, long time ago.

She was a real looker in her day.

    Margo MacDonald RIP.

I think that is an English thing. They expect big guys to be big eejits that just heider the ball. Hartson was class on the deck for a big striker.

    Not you as well;)

Although his temperament is dubious ‘big’ Mark Viduka was excellent on the ball.

My point is, really, you learn to control/run with a ball when you’re about 4 years old and it becomes second nature very quickly and whether you grow up to be 5ft5 or 6ft4 you don’t just lose it one day because you’re quite tall;)

I think their is a myth about this low centre of gravity thing. How do you shove a guy of about 6ft 5 off the ball? A big man has a huge advantage.

I used to like the big guy for Dortmund Koller I think it was looked a bit like Nicholas Cage. He was a class big player.

Ibrahimovic is not too shabby either. A bigger man has to have an advantage. The modern game has shown that if you are under 6ft you are small in comparison to most others. Zidane must have been well over 6ft and he was pretty impressive with the ball at his feet. Probably one of the most graceful players the world has seen. Unless you abused his family that is!

  15. Afternoon all, second post during a lengthy lurking career.Off topic I know but just in to say a big thanks to Pat McGinley, who I met recently at the CQ10 charity night.

Pat was good enough to donate a very generous prize of tyres up to the value of £500, a prize I was fortunate enough to share with a fellow Dumbartonian.

Just returned from the Bathgate depot, sporting brand new tyres, fantastic , fast, friendly and efficient service, with Pat going out of his way to accommodate us.

Highly recommended to all on CQN.

PS if you are around Pat, heard you had done yourself an injury, hope you are on your feet again asap!

Aye its all about ability and height is certainly no impediment if a player has been able to control a ball since he could walk! It is, as you say, an advantage for that player.

Zidane is a great example, and Jan Koller was a big lump alright:)

At the other end of the scale though, it annoys me equally to hear of young players being released from clubs simply because they are ‘too small’. Celtic were guilty of this at one stage too(Andrew Robertson at Dundee Utd was one I believe).

I’m pretty sure Billy Stark said that if Xavi and Iniesta were coming through the ranks of an SPL club they wouldn’t have lasted two minutes! We can laugh now…

  21. Bobby Robson has had a litany of crazy quotes, one of my favourites was after England played Cameroon in 1990 he was asked by reporter if England had underestimated Cameroon. He replied “We didn’t underestimate them. They were just a lot better than we thought.”

  25. What is the Stars on

I posted this earlier, but just in case anyone missed it I will post it again

I have been given 2 tips for today

    In the 4.50 at Aintree

Zabana about 6 or 7/1 and I have been told to have a good each way bet

In the 9.15 at Dundalk I have been told that a big run is expected from House Limit (about 12/1) This is owned by the same guy as last weeks Dundalk winner Farranadooney

Under no circumstances however is anyone to put 110% of their wages on these horses

Since then I have been told Barbeque is a good bet in the 7.45 Dundalk
