Neil, Brendan and the risk-free dream appointment

328

I’m seeing a bit of “Neil Lennon cannot get the job now” comment after our capitulation at Ibrox this afternoon.  Brendan Rodgers got things equally wrong at Ibrox in December but no one was calling him the wrong man for the job.

If you think the primary issue Celtic have right now is tactical choice and team selection, you are overlooking what is staring you in the face.  Celtic are playing with a squad that has changed little since Ronny Deila days, despite the volume of new faces introduced to the club in the intervening period.  Seven of today’s starters and eight of last weeks’ were at the club under Ronny.

Ronny won two of our eight consecutive titles, but his final squad was in need of significant overhaul.  Three years on and Odsonne Edouard, Oliver Burke and Jonny Hayes are not going to significantly change things.

Neil could have played Scott Sinclair, but Scott has been dropped by both Neil and Brendan at various times over the last two seasons, there is no guarantee he would have made a difference today.  He could have risked Kieran Tierney, or perhaps James Forrest, but for a dead rubber when we have a treble treble to compete for?

Eye on the prize and the prize right now is the Scottish Cup.  And if you want a tip on who will be our next manager, it will be whoever we think will successfully improve the squad.  Whatever Neil’s chances are, I doubt they were influenced by today’s performance.  And if you believe any appointment is risk-free, dream on.

My worst nightmare was DM — although some have suggested that the talent is there just a case that he got a job he couldn’t cope with given its scale and its complexity — we are much closer to what he can handle and he has a record of doing well at that level.

However MO’N and RK — no, no and thrice no.

As a shareholder thanks for your efforts, im disgusted with those cowards and charlatans in our boardroom.

Anyone know why we have record amounts in our bank account and are wasting money by paying tax when it should be on the park?

Celtic have never had those sums so why now?

If its to let Sevco catch up its job done.

If the money is still there when season starts then our board is preventing the supporters from seeing the best possible team we can afford, as well as giving us the best chance possible to the CL money, therefore they are negligent and are not acting in the club’s best interests on and off the field as EBTs and Res 12 have shown. Do we have to wait for disaster to strike before we take action to get shot of these imposters or will they take preventive action before its too late?

I’d expect Rafa to want to be able to choose who he wants in the team, as demonstrated by BR, that’s no go name work

  9. I’d genuinely been open to the idea of Lenny as the gaffer next year. I had though for a long time identified Ibrox as Lenny’s job interview. He blew it. Today I seen a Celtic manager on the sideline who had no idea how to turn the game around.

Our faults were present prior to Lenny and we’ve been awful at times all season long so it’s not all lennon’s responsibility but he’s two points behind Gerrard since he took over and shouldn’t be trusted with the historic opportunity to get ten.

Neil has my thanks for getting us over the line but we need to move on.

Got a horrible feelin Lenny was hogtied and told none of that fancy changing strategies, just stick to the format and if you suceed your name is in the hat with moyes and clarke, follow orders is your best chance of keeping the job, just listen to big john.

I agree Paul that our squad has been run into the ground and but for BR improving nearly every player we would have been in trouble before now. Why then did you say every transfer window was a sucWe talk big but the board are overly cautious and reactive.

This squad has 10-12 players leaving so lets build around the quality we have, stop buying teenagers with potential and actually get some job ready guys in. Every transfer doesnt work out but we keep going back to the same players.

Today was abysmal but of bigger concern is next season and what the new man has to work with. Better additions need added.

Incidentally I read Ranieri is available in the summer

  14. There’s been a lot of talk today about Paul 67 having inside info and today’s leader supposedly telling us that it’s a done deal already that Neil Lennon has the gig.

Now, I’m not claiming to be the best reader in this place but I’ve searched and searched for this definitive news in Paul’s prose and I can’t find it.

    Here’s what I read:-

I’m see(ing) a bit of “Neil Lennon cannot get the job now” comment after our capitulation at Ibrox this afternoon. Brendan Rodgers got things equally wrong at Ibrox in December but no one was calling him the wrong man for the job.

That’s a statement that tells us the job offer was not decided on the basis of today’s game. It also tells us many great Celtic managers have lost at Ibrox. It does not say “Neil’s got the gig”.

This tells us that Neil has been playing with another man’s (or men’s) team. It also says he has not had a chance to make a recruitment mark in a transfer window. It does not say “Neil’s got the gig”.

Ronny won two of our eight consecutive titles, but his final squad was in need of significant overhaul. Three years on and Odsonne Edouard, Oliver Burke and Jonny Hayes are not going to significantly change things.

This tells us that we have not re-shaped the squad significantly since Ronny’s time. It also hints that Brendan’s recruitments, Odsonne and Jonny excepted, have not improved us greatly, though he did well with the players he inherited. It does not say “Neil’s got the gig”.

This says that other selection choices could have been made today but they were unlikely to make much difference. It also hints that it is better to rest some players for the Cup Final than to risk them in this game. It does not say “Neil’s got the gig”.

Eye on the prize and the prize right now is the Scottish Cup. And if you want a tip on who will be our next manager, it will be whoever we think will successfully improve the squad. Whatever Neil’s chances are, I doubt they were influenced by today’s performance. And if you (think) any appointment is risk-free, dream on.

This section states that the next manager will be one that the Board thinks can improve the club. It tells us that the Board, or the recruitment wing of it. cannot guarantee that any appointment, however big a name, can guarantee us any title or trophy wins and they will be a risk. It does not say “Neil’s got the gig”.

So where are the rest of you reading that Paul is telling us Neil’s got the gig? Is it in the bit about Intelligent financing and the auction?

    Or am I just dyslexic?

  15. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Much less expensive Lennon team beat Barcelona at their peak, the best team in the world at the time, Lenny picked the team and turned them out, today couldn’t even compete, something no right.

  16. Why does a post from Mad Mitch, (of Crater fame?) have me doing mental gymnastics?

Or am I too old or too late?

  17. yesterdays nothing game has now become a “win at all costs after today…….. 3 points were at stake nothing else

  18. No idea who our manager will be

What I know, 4 left in February, to be replaced by Neil Lennon and youth coach Damian Duff

Mind you a youth Coach has out thought Neil today and Brendan In December.

    Anyway

de Vries, Izzaguire, Gamboa, Boyata, Lustig, Allan, all out of Contract

Toljan, Benkovic, Weah ( gone) Burke, loan deals expire

We should look at moving on quite a few

Compper, Hendry, Sinclair ??? Ntcham ??? Bitton ??? Hayes ???

Would allow the new Manager huge scope to build a new team and squad

Would the Board back him though – with quality and not numbers ???

We do have Shved, Bayo ( currently injured) & Kouassi ( also injured and has missed over 12 months injured) to come into squad, along with Anthony Ralston, Euan Henderson and Mickey Johnson

We need someone who like Brendan can develop and get best from our players

Not sure Lenny can deliver this development

  19. I watched the Hertz up at Eberdeen on Friday and if Celtic don’t wipe the floor with them in the cup final, I’ll ,I’ll I’ll, well I’ll eat my hat.

  20. NorrieM

Add Lewis Morgan to the mix.

I hear third hand he has been turning in creditable performances,

  21. In any other league in the world for example…

Had Bayern just won another title and been beaten today by Dortmund

If Barcelona won another title and been beaten today by Real

If PSG had won another title but were beat today by Lyon

If Juventus had won another title but were beat today by Napoli

    Would anyone else really care?

Why is it because it’s Scotland them winning an end season game mean armageddon for us?

We all know we need an overhaul in the summer that was always going to be the case, today doesnt change anything

  22. I don’t see how we can recruit a manager that would be sought after by an EPL or big league club? We are predated upon by the likes of Southampton and have transfer targets who prefer to go to Villa than us, so why would any sought after manager choose to come here when there are options in that strata?

Yes, we got Brendan, but only after he was damaged goods- seen as an up and coming coach who did not have a big team mentality. He repaired his reputation significantly enough with us, so much so that he got a gig at ……….. Leicester. But the top 6 were not looking at him- they may change their minds if he can string out Leicester as a top 10 team for 6 more months but they would not be looking at him if he had stayed at Celtic ( just as they did not look at Virgil Van Dijk until he had “proven himself” at Southampton)..

Now Mourinho may be seen as damaged goods, but its a different strata of damage. He has a track record of boring success at Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real before he blew it with the spoiled superstars of Old Trafford. He is being eyed by the likes of Juve and other big clubs- Celtic will come a long way down his list of attractive offers. Rafa Benitez, currently slumming it on big wages at Newcastle, has managed at Valencia, Liverpool, Inter, Chelsea, Napoli and Real before taking a big wage club with a team of mid0table mediocrity. Like Steve Clarke, he has shown he can construct a defence wherever he goes. He too will get big offers from tons of clubs more advantaged than ours. Why would he come here?

Now, I was wrong about Brendan- I did not think he would come here and I was proven wrong. Like Martin O’Neill, he claimed to love Celtic, and took the gig because of that love (and a big wage packet). Maybe there’s another damaged manager who has run out of big team options, like Brendan, but unless there’s a Celtic connection, why would they choose us above Huddersfield or Swansea.

My best bet on manager selection is we will get either

    a) a known SPFL manager with Euro credentials- Clarke or Lennon

    b) an up and coming coach in the Deila mould, who will be dismissed as a Project before he starts [Potter, Ivan Leko (Bruges)]

    c) An ex-Celt down on his luck- Moyes, Lambert or Keane

    d) A recently sacked, still unemployed, but still admired EPL operator, such as Wagner, Bilic or Di Matteo.

    e) Stuart Baxter

  23. Watching Celtic in possession is like watching a game of chess. No movement at all.

Whoever gets the managers job, please, please, please end this tiresome style of play, passing back and forth across the back. Everyone has worked out how to play against this. Hey, NFL worked it out when he was boss at Easter Road, surely he doesn’t think any differently at Celtic.

In the period following the loss of two Lisbon Lions, many will have reviewed that historic day on film. Did you seen any pendulum passing back and forth at the back? Not on your life. Our greatest victory was achieved by taking the game to the opposition, pushing them back, playing in their half of the field.

Bring back a style of play which the fans want to see and which makes opponents fear playing against us.

  24. WeefratheTim on

I have just renewed my s/t, but if the board think we are so thick to allow NL to be our next manager, they better think again. Europe is our aim, why put Neil under that pressure. I do despair where we are going. Please remember PL, the huns are catching up. On your head be it. HH

  25. The defining moment in today’s game came in the second minute when sevco scored with a free kick that should have been dealt with easily by Bain. That set the tempo for the rest of the game and gave the huns the belief that they could win.

The fact that we could only create one chance in 90 minutes, that it took Neil Lennon 70 minutes to see that the number 10 jersey was empty and that we were tactically bereft only reinforces what I have said before on this blog that Neil should not get the gig permanently. Bumping your gums about the huns having a huge disciplinary problem does not befit a Celtic manager.

When your manager begins to sound like Slippy G then you need to start worrying.

Neil, not for the first time since he came back, looked as if he lacked motivation today, just like the team. Hopefully today is not a indication of how the next two weeks are going to pan out. ??????????*

Bain not to blame, that was a cross into the box that requires the defence to easily head out

About time this disgusting “song” was highlighted…why has it taken so long?

  28. WEEBOBBYCOLLINS on 12TH MAY 2019 9:51 PM

The reason attendances will fall away and the top tier closed is because some people’s love of Celtic is conditional…

    ……………….

I have supported Celtic for 6 decades. There have been many, many good times and some bad times. Our NIAR – very good, their NIAR – very bad. I renewed my season ticket every season during their NIAR. I went to all the games knowing the club had no money and were in danger of closing down. My love was unconditional. We were mocked in the media, beggars, Cambuslang, Wayne Biggins, signing two players from the British Army. It looked hopeless. How could we compete with Them. Fergus saved us. Success followed and has been a regular visitor to Celtic Park ever since.

The reason my love is a bit less unconditional these days is because we have a lot of money sitting on the bank compared to any other team in Scotland. We have seen how a very good manager can elevate us to a level that our domestic rivals can’t compete with. To fail to appoint the best manager we can afford will lead to mediocrity and a half empty stadium.

  29. PRESTONPANS BHOYS,

Respectfully disagree. Yes the defence should have dealt with it but it was hardly a postage stamp free kick. Scott should have easily dealt with it. He’s been in great form but that is a bad goal to lose as a keeper. Craig Gordon would be taking pelters for it if it had been him.
