Neil Lennon as a mirror on Scotland

1091

When I checked my phone this morning it was full of emails and texts about Kevin McKenna’s seminal article in the Observer on the treatment, or lack of it, Neil Lennon experienced during his years in Scotland. It placed a mirror in front of the former Celtic manager, for Scotland to look at its reflection.

The prime targets were not missed: the Scottish Government, the SFA and the conspicuously idle anti-racism bodies, while the “reserved professions”, the Tories and the C of S were marked for historically nurturing anti-Catholic and Irish sentiment in Scotland.

People outside Scotland will read in horror, perhaps tinged with a whiff of moral superiority that their own communities are not similarly afflicted.  This, ironically, would reflect the moral superiority many in Scotland viewed the English with last week, as a sizeable minority of their apparently poorly-educated, old and white voters backed candidates who align with racist, misogynistic and homophobe views.

In CQN comments section Scotland has often been parodied as the worst small country in the world, which is absurd.  In truth, its panorama of human values vary little from those shared by our neighbours or anywhere across the globe.  To think otherwise invests more weight in racial traits than I’m comfortable with.

Did this earlier but don’t know if worked.

Reading that NFL is on various vacant managerial betting lists.

If he gets a job will he come back for any of our players?

My cash would be on his 1st target being Broonie

  2. Auldheid I am not sure what point you are trying to make. But given all that has happened to NL, given all that has happened in the rangers sage (the corruption, lied and cheating)., given the sectarianism we have encountered, given the OB act.

How can you call it banter?

Just dropped by to say please please please not a rookie manager, all that will do is ensure big Pete will still call all the shots, and from a football perspective rather than a bank account balance perspective, thats will not be a good thing for us.

    PL will call them anyway.

DD will never again allow anyone with the clout of MON.

  4. Enjoyed the article and your comments as well Paul.perhaps this is not the forum to be discussing this, but do you think things would have been handled better or worse in an independent Scotland..??

My fear about independence is that if it’s successful and things are going well everybody’s happy. But if it starts going belly up, then the right wing fascist hordes will look for scapegoat’s and guess who will be near the top of the list..!!

  5. Hi Paul67,

Read the article this morning (courtesy of CQN) thought it was a very telling and balanced piece.

You do it justice and hit a few prime targets yourself.

    Hail Hail

  6. Neganon. The boards strategy is to save money waiting on the hun and hope we get lucky in Europe? That is the strategy of Desmond, Bankier, Duffy, Riley, Allison et al?

Guys like you are the reason there’s no “fan’s rep” on the Board. Give me a break.

The huns are equally scunnered with

the OB act. There are a lot not interested in it as I have said before as not very many people are affected by it. On saying all that they made a mess of it and they now recognise this, and it will go.

It was never ever an anti catholic act regardless of what you think, and to judge a government on one piece of legislation, however stupid it is I think somewhat unfair.

You can also add Scotland’s senior law officers in government who are appointed not elected. I am not saying that this is wrong or unusual but it is true.

To sustain free prescriptions, free bus passes for the over 60s and other laudable initiatives such as no university fees, in the event of a September ‘Yes’ vote can anyone give me an idea what rate of income tax will be required? Can it be done on the 20p standard rate that currently exists or will it require a rise in the standard rate and, if so, roughly how much.

I would also like further information on the newly independent Scottish Government’s plans for old age pensions. These are set to significantly increase in 2016 for new pensioners in the UK. Will these plans be maintained or will the new Scottish Government have other plans. I would like information on what these plans are.

Can anyone help me with information on these issues?

    Issue 1

After independence Scots would lose our ‘freebies’ like free prescriptions, free education, and bus passes for the elderly.

No, we wouldn’t. Our “freebies” are safe, we’re already paying for them. They are paid for out of the pocket money that Westminster deigns to return to Scotland, which in turn comes out of the revenues Scotland sends to Westminster. We get back less than we give. That’s happening now, under the Union, but because Holyrood has adopted a different set of spending priorities from Westminster, we get our “freebies”. Much the same happens in Wales, where prescriptions are also free. England could have these “freebies” too, but Westminster chooses to spend the cash on other things – like introducing privatisation into the NHS in England.

Currently we’re subject to Westminster’s whims, and should the Tories and their Lib Dem hangers on decide to cut public spending even further, then Scottish public services are at risk too. Scotland will have no say in the matter. Do you trust Davie Cameron with your granny’s bus pass?

After independence, all Scottish revenues would accrue to the Scottish Parliament, which would give them a bigger pot than they currently have. We’ll also have a Parliament that is free to make the spending decisions that the Scottish electorate votes for. Only independence can guarantee our freebies.

    Issue 2

    Should find it here somewhere.

  10. Awe naw.

There are a couple of very simple ways it impacts Catholics.

Firstly it was confirmed that blessing oneself in the, ahem, wrong way could be an offence under the act. So am overt display of Catholicism can be illegal. So if Arthur boruc came back to celtic he could be arrested for his normal routine.

Secondly well who decides what is offensive? Well it’s the police. The police are institutionally anti catholic something well documented and evidenced over and over again. The act does not identify what is offensive. That’s down to the police. So everything is fair game.

Lastly remember what the minister said? It’s about getting an equal playing field with celtic fans. To them irishness and Catholicism are indivisible.

I spoke to the Chief Statistician for the 2011 Census late last year, (not a statistician myself, more of a numbers man), on the wider question of Irish identity in Scotland as expressed through the census. Not all the findings had been extrapolated at that point and I do need to find out whether that process is more complete now. Some fascinating insights though. Only 20% of the population in Glasgow identified with the Church of Scotland, with much higher percentages elsewhere, 40 plus in some parts, or should that be pairts? Now, what conclusions can we draw from that, well given that some of those will support Celtic, we can safely assume that Glasgow is not only our dear green place, it adds proof positive, to the theory, that Glasgow is Green and White!

The media have a lot to answer for in this regard, yet many Celtic supporters still buy the rags, listen to the phone ins, believe what the media tell them, this blog is full of them.

    Just my take on things.

The length of time only means what meaning anyone choses to give it.

To get Res12 to the SFA as a serious issue it was best that it was done away from msm spotlight. That was Celtic’s preference and to ignore their reasons would have killed any chances of getting it dealt with properly.

The time taken has been logistical ie getting those involved around the table but also to examine the case to support the Res12 aim against the SFA stance when they gave one, which was basically “go away ” and decide on a strategy to deal with that.

The update shows we have passed those hurdles working with the club. In fact I think I can say they surprised us to one degree or another.

The accusations made by some was either the issue was parked or we are being led a dance. The update shows it has not been parked and the latter accusation suggests Celtic have been lying to us and we are mugs enough not to recognise it. Neither is true.

Some questions were asked in the comments section of Phil Mac Giolla Bhain’s blog at

    http://www.philmacgiollabhain.ie/resolution-12-latest-update/

  21. Instanbullcelt. The link to the site you posted is another example of the actual bully here. The cyber Nats. The spin and lies from Nats really is breathtaking.

Salmons short term bribes are just that. The council tax freeze for example is one of the most regressive taxation policies I have ever seen. But I don’t see any of the socialist Nats complaining about that???

    Funny that.

  22. My friends in Celtic,

I am no longer surprised about the amount of abuse PL (The Devil Incarnate ) gets on here. It seems it is second only to his abuse on ff.

He must be the most powerful non elected person in Scotland responsible for everybody and everything that goes wrong but never anything that goes right or is well done.

A couple of points to consider :-

Who would his distractors replace him with and at what salary. Bearing in mind if you pay peanuts——–

PL was headhunted by Arsenal who are financially astute. I don’t know his package but he turned them down, showing loyalty that others including some of our “Legends” have not displayed.

I believe PL is an accountant, he does what good accountants do. Only better, ask our “friends” on the south side who call him “Liewell ”

Negativity is easy and courts controversy. Positives with answers are much more “Taxing”.

I’d go further anything too Celticy is fair game, as the away support especially have found out in Scotland. Support Celtic too noticeably and the OB act will kick you in the balls, and the club had to cow tow.

They couldn’t deal with the rabid sectarianism in Scotland before Rangers went under, so they lumped it all in, and just called it offensive.

I have known Kevin McKenna for a good number of years. He’s still as big a Celtic man as he was when I first met him. One of his oldest pals is the surgeon who operated on Henrik a few days after the Lyon game.
