Neil Lennon era ends

1817

Neil Lennon ‘got’ Celtic.  He was a rookie appointment, and the early weeks were far from comfortable, a Hampden defeat to Ross County looked like an ominous early sign, but from the start of his first preseason he didn’t look back.

He was a hugely successful Celtic manager in Scotland and in Europe.  The Barcelona team of the last six years, possibly the greatest team in history, were at their peak when they visited Celtic Park in November 2012. Neil came up with the game plan which brought Celtic victory and raised our profile across Europe.

What he had to endure off-field during his time at Celtic was atrocious and a blight on our society.  But he overcame it.  He stuck it out when you or I may have left, and now he leaves on his own terms – an undisputed winner.

More at another time on who next, but if we get a man nearly as capable we will be doing well.

Take care, Neil.

  1. Amateurish.

    No control over the announcement.

There’s still NOTHING on the Celtic site.

    No forward planning.

It looks like Neil has taken the huff.

Where is the professionalism from both manager and employer?

Let me try to make it simple for you.

    The Great Desmondo dictates policy.

    That statement represents his views.

If you’re trying to interpret what’s going on at Celtic, start from that statement.

A heartfelt thank you to Neil Lennon for all that he has achieved at Celtic.

Neil has faced and overcome personal and external problems during his time at Celtic that make his and the Club’s achievements all the more remarkable.

Neil has achieved in an environment of open hostility and threat that shames Scotland.

Best wishes to Neil and his family for the future.

    Onwards and upwards, forever Celtic.

Just seen the very photogenic Delaney’s Dunkey on skysports. Well done big fella for pointing out the treatment Neil Lennon has had to endure in Glasgow.

  7. Sad to hear about Neil Lennon moving on. He deserves every bit of good that comes to him. He has given us so much.

I gather Henrik is the bookies’ favourite. Please Ghod, no. There are plenty of ex-players who have better CVs as managers. Remember the supposed “dream team”. Didn’t want that and I don’t want Henrik.

  8. Stevie clark and the King as assistant for me.

= Big Zlato in up front for season 15/16…

  9. leftclicktic We are all Neil Lennon on

If Houston is anywhere near the celtic No2 job I will feel rightly or wrongly based on info i had been given the Neil hand was forced.

Ohhh and I will be sick to the pit of my stomach.

But hey ho what does a fans opinion matter nowadays.

  11. If all was amicable in relation to Neil leaving, I would have thought he would have made his announcement before our last home game to allow the supporters to say cheerio and thanks. That he didn’t makes me think something recent (perhaps as suggested – budget) has made up his mind for him.

So massive thanks to Neil for what he gave to the hoops, and particularly for what he tolerated in his efforts to make Celtic successful.

I actually think the timing is right from a footballing perspective. New blood, assuming the board get it right could add new impetus to our next league campaign. There is one thing certain, it’ll be a baptism of fire – CL qualifiers!

  12. Aberdeen Evening Express Page 46 – full page on Cults Primary School – who have won Aberdeen League, Dennis Law Cup, North of Scotland Cup, Finalists in Scottish Schools and are on course for the remaining 2 cups in Aberdeen school football…whoever manages that lot should be getting a phone call (I’m sitting waiting!!)

  13. Ernie –

I think the biggest problem is that the statement represents YOUR views.

why else would you post it every day without any qualification?

Congratulations on your Radio Scotland performance earlier.

John Beattie suggesting that Hibs, Hearts and Rangers being in Tier Two, and also that NFL had walked out on Celtic, thus meant that Scottish football was on it’s knees, was impressively dealt with, so well done.

Can’t be easy dealing with that sort.

    Difficult time for we Tims.

Hail Hail to Celtic supporters who provide support in times of difficulty.

    That`s what good Tims do.

As for the perennial whingers, be consoled.

The huns agree with you and can be relied on to support you.

  17. This must have been brewing for some time. Myalby clearly knew. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a budget issue for Neil. He knows that the league is already won for next year and the only challenge he has in front of him is Europe. With no real budget for players, at least the type to make an impact in Europe, what is the point for him? He wants to challenge himself against the best and his stock is high right now. Seems like he is poised to announce his new club. He gave Celtic time to either fix the problem or announce the news. Celtic failed to meet his deadline and now he has taken matters into his own hands. I don’t blame him. He needs to look after himself and his family.

I hope and pray the Board select a manager for Europe. I would be thrilled with Moyes or Mackay as they have proved themselves in the EPL. Mackay would be my #1.

And I thought it was going to be a boring Summer without my beloved Celtic.

  18. I wish we still thought of Tony Mowbray as the cracking big guy we knew as a player, but alas…

    Don’t do it Henrik.

Number one on my personal wish is….

    wait for it…

Haha, then no.3 was his evil, photographic-negative twin.

  20. Steve Clarke with John Kennedy in his coaching team. Would also like to see a proper Director of Football, an ex player, to drive the footballing strategy at the club.

No more de facto Director of Football, let PL concentrate in the P&L, its what he does best, and leave the football side of the business to football professionals.

  21. One last lonely thought?

Who would have thought that Sleekit Sally would outlast St Francis?

  22. Paul Le Guen would actually make sense. He is managing Oman, which can’t exactly be time-consuming or interesting. And when he tried to actually get the Huns to play attractive football, it caused a player revolt. (Go figure …)

Let me make it simple for you. I am talking about what you post on this site, not statements from anyone else.

There are several posters on here who use the term ‘Old Firm’ on a regular basis, and few use it more than you do.

Neil Lennon leaves the club and you bring up the ‘Old Firm’. Pointless really.

    Paul67,

Any view as to why there has been ( as yet), no club statement?

Are they looking to do a double by announcing the departure and new arrival simultaneously.

My only hope is that rather than start with names, we start with the job spec and type of manager we want, and then look to fill it.

    My job spec would be

    – Minimum 8 years coaching / management, preferably at 2 or more clubs

    – Experience outside Scotland either as player or coach

    – Over achieved & can demonstrate managing under pressure

    – Would quickly bond with fans

    – Can manage a hostile press

    – Can work with the board and choose his battles

    – Commitment to attacking football and youth development, but doesn’t use them as excuse for under achievement.

    – Tactically astute and good motivator

Lastly, let’s look at the guys who have been successes in recent years, and those who haven’t, and learn the lessons from Barnes and Mowbray

I would agree with your criteria for a new manager but would like to add two more,

    A disciplinarian

A manager who demands the highest possible levels of physical fitness and conditioning.

We may not be able to get the worlds best players but we should be aiming to have some of the fittest.

Also have to say that none of the names being mentioned fill me with excitement.

Overall, sorry to see Lenny go, as a man he is an inspiration for his courage fortitude and strength, as a manager i think the best is yet to come for him.

Now i have to get back to work.
