Neilson gifted Celtic a cause

186

“Decapitated” was the word Hearts manager Robbie Neilson suggested would be necessary for a Celtic red card after a challenge by Alexandro Bernabei on Wednesday night.  Why he thought it was necessary, or helpful, to add invective language to the ether ahead of Saturday’s Scottish Cup quarterfinal is a puzzle.

Whatever his desired outcome, he has reason to ponder before giving Celtic players a cause to rally against again.  The game was clearly a no-contest before Aaron Mooy converted Jota’s cross inside two minutes at Tynecastle.  Hearts were lucky to escape with just the three-goal deficit.

You can train players all week, but send them into their 42nd game of the season and getting absolute sharpness from the same voice can be a challenge.  Footballers are not machines, they can only climb the mountain so many times before it feels like another hill walk.

When Neilson picked on a young player, still settling in Scotland, it gave his team-mates a cause célèbre.  Ange Postecoglou had an opportunity to proverbially pin the Hearts manager’s words to the dressing-room wall.  It was a rookie mistake from an experienced manager.

You and I have seen Inverness, Falkirk and Newco take us out at the semi-final stage of the Scottish Cup.  Maybe we should shout for Ayr United tonight?

    AT,

Its you that keeps making sweeping generalisations and pigeon holing people.

I’m an Irish Unionist, got a problem with the terminology, deal with it, I do not accept anyone else’s attempts to pigeon hole or impose their terminology on my views.

You rant about what’s happening to social services like the NHS ignoring the fact that the same party you lambast were responsible for every social service that is now being decimated, and none of those could have happened without Britain being united. It would never have happened in an independent Scotland, lets be honest, or an independent England. but lets not let the real facts get in the way of your eternally negative ranting on only your cherry picked selections.

If I remember right, you even had a problem with Corbyn who IMO was the last vestige of a socialist Labour party, and was anti-war and anti-colonialism.

It’s easy to find problems everywhere with anyone, what I note is you have provided no solutions or suggestions for improvement beyond breaking up a union, in the English/Scottish case, it was voluntary to let the failed attempt at Scottish colonialization and cover the debt incurred for that attempt.

So for clarity can you tell me what you actually stand for rather than what you don’t like?

*here’s a wee bit of useless trivia for you, my da was 1st generation Scottish, his mother came fae Connemara, the parish of Ballyconneely tae be precise, where she is buried, the diaspora in Dumbarton predominately hail hail from there and up in the People’s Republic of Brucehill, where my in-laws hail hail from, they jokingly paraphrase Bing Crosby in the “Bells of St Mary’s” by saying if you need help just dial O for O’Malley.

Now I have been over in Connemara several times and researched for a long time and can’t find the reason, other than where they were on the cattle boat, for them descending in that wee rebel town.

Now out in the Vale of Leven where I was born and bred the diaspora there is predominately Donegal and that can be put down to the discovery that the water in the River Leven was full of the minerals, from Loch Lomond, that were extremely beneficial to silk dyeing and printing, the companies mainly employed women as the only jobs for men were in the maintenance of the machinery so at first the girls made there way there from the likes of Argyll and Perthshire, victims of the Highland Clearances, and also Lennoxtown which had a similar industry but the Vale works paid higher and was more long standing.

Now one of the owners had a holiday home in Donegal and noticed that young Irish girls tended to marry quite late in life as they stayed home to help their mothers, so he approached the Parish Priest for help in procuring them and any who were already wed could find jobs for their spouses in farms or public works.

The first dye works was in the wee holy village of Renton and the famed Renton Road, between there and Dumbarton was built by Donegal navvies, as was the railway tunnel under Cardross Road, where orange Dumbarton, at the time, was infiltrated by navvies from the Renton and that other holy village Duntocher, fresh from blasting through the rock on the Great Western Road.

Finally, if any of you are ever in Balloch and fancy a cruise up Loch Lomond, well try Sweeney’s Cruises as the originator of that fine company was headhunted while working as a boat boy for the same dye works owner.

  12. Really interesting chat at the top of this thread about our Champions League potential. I cant disagree that making a dent in the competition proper is a really, really tall order.

The structure of the CL and the finances available to teams from the top 5 leagues just seems too much. Even those outside the top 5 are getting fees from English clubs of £80-100 million for the likes of Darwin Nunez and Anthony, as Ajax and Benfica received.

As SFTB noted, Sevilla, Ajax, Benfica, Shakhtar, Porto and a few others from outside the top five leagues have managed to get deep into the knockouts, and it seems to me that if it will ever happen for us, it will happen under Ange.

A tight, hugely committed group, with a clear identity, modern style of play and ambitious young(ish) players is exactly the profile of team to have an outside chance of over reaching. It would take a fair wind and a decent draw for once, though every draw would be difficult of course.

One or two top tier additions this summer, similar to the Jota and CCV signings would help.

And we would need one of our players to really breakout and put their stamp on the group games. They are all excellent talents but do Reo, Kyogo or Jota have another level in their game to be consistently decisive in CL matches. I think yes, and my money would be on the latter to raise his level higher on the biggest stage.

  13. Words you don’t often hear on this blog,or many other Celtic blogs,

    “I am an Irish Unionist”

More suited to scum blogs,I would have thought, only thing missing is No Surrender.

So a united Ireland is not something many Celtic supporters don’t want then, news to me.

  15. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

Its pretty simple really, an Irish Unionist wants a united Ireland, the word unionist is not owned by anyone.

  16. A few years ago a team did make a big impact in the CL.A French team.Think it might have been Nice.A team of players who just seemed to come together at the right time.Quarters,or Semis, can’t remember, but similar style to what we are watching now.Of course that brilliant run caused the destruction of that team,as most of the players were bought by the Elite the next year.

    It can happen.Not often.

  17. Turkeybhoy

Not sure which French team you are thinking of.

Nice have never made it to a CL Group stage. Best I can see is last 32 Europa where they were knocked out or last 16 Conference.

Lille did make it to last 16 of CL last year, qualifying top of a weakish group (Seville, Wolfsburg and Salzburg) but Celtic have a better overall record of Euro achievement than them. They have Timothy Weah and the Canadian Jonathan Davis playing for them. Lille and Nice are currently 6th and 7th in Ligue 1 and unlikely to even make CL this season

  18. Lille did manage to sell 3 players for big sums last summer

    Botman to Newcastle for £27m

    Celik to Roma for £19m

    Yazici to Trabzonspor £16m

    Onana to Everton- £9.5m

Not sure how well they are doing

They bought 8 players with this money , one £11m and one £6,6m- the rest were £4 or under

AT- its easy because there are.regardless if you are prounion like or want to cede from that corruption. Its down to the vote and what people vote for, like 2014.we adapt.it doesnt stop me looking to break with your union as soon as democracy says its ok

C-in the English/Scottish case, it was voluntary to let the failed attempt at Scottish colonialization and cover the debt incurred for that attempt.

AT-it was a little more complex than the Darien scandal but i see where your goin, and democracy did not play a part in it at all

Really looking forward to next season’s Champions League. We will draw at least two massive/well funded teams (RB Leipzig a case in point) from Pots 1&2 and hopefully get a bit of luck with the Pot 3 team. Although, there are some daunting manners in that pot as well now.

If it wasn’t for that clown Mudryk, we’d have beaten Shaktar at least one of the games.

Loads more experience, cohesion, adaptability with Ange’s systems and as strong a squad as I can ever remember, all bodes well for a good crack at it again next year. Might try to get up for one of the home games.

I was kinda puzzled too Paul that Neilson chose to inflame emotions with his remarks last Wednesday. A bit of the Craig Levein syndrome maybe, some kind of provincial arrogance. I was more shocked by what he said actually, coming from a Hearts manager whose team have been playing physical against us for 20 years at least. Before that in the 70’s and 80’s they wouldn’t dare try to outmuscle us. And as you rightly say choosing to highlight wee Bernabei! Looks very calculated. Not surprised to see mini huns criticising Argentinians. Very unprofessional of Neilson, reminds me of Slippy calling out Ryan Porteous, really snidey.

  24. Lyon makes more sense, they made a CL semi 2019/20 but I don’t think they are a true comparator club. They are ranked 26 in Europe and no.2 in France. They paid £16m for our best player – Dembele- so they are a predator club for us. We’d be as well comparing ourselves to Dortmund, Spurs, Roma or Valencia.

Lyon made CL Group stage 12 seasons in a row from 2000, mostly by direct entry. They missed out on CL for 3 seasons 2012-15 before making CL in 4 of the past 6 seasons. Since 2000 they have finished 4th in CL Group on one occasion, 3rd on 4 occasions (they did not do much in Europa except one season where they were knocked out at S-F stage-2017), they finished 2nd in CL on 8 occasions (going out at last 16 stage 6 times- in 2010- they made it to CL S-F and the same stage in 2020, losing to Bayern on both occasions. They finished top of their CL Group on 4 occasions- (all in a row from 203- 2006, as a result they got to Q-F for 3 seasons and a last 16 knock out in1)

This is a vastly superior European record than ours. In that time we have played them 4 times, losing 3 of the ties and winning one; Sevco have done slightly better with one win and a draw in 4 ties).

In addition to the 22m Euro fee they claim to have paid for Dembele, they have topped that fee on 6 occasions and have bought around 25 players for more than we paid for Edouard. Again we need to compare with truly comparable clubs with a record of recent achievement similar to ours.

  25. Melvin Udall

Sadly it is no longer a good memory.

There are a lot of sites where you can get football stats quite readily, Transfermarkt, Footy Stats etc; but Google and Wikipedia can give you readily classified info.

I look up “Celtic FC in European football” often and you get a season by season outline plus some condensed stats such as our record against teams from specific countries. You can do the same for most teams- you can quickly get “Lille FC in European football” or “Lyon FC in European football” in seconds with the stuff summarised.

I tend to use the 21st century stats as our comparator as it is post-Bosman and post- the hegemony of Big 5 leagues. Using our 66-74 stats would only skew the picture and, to be really honest, as we are now in 2023, The past 100-15 years only should be used as in that time, bigger clubs and bigger leagues have started to treat the Europa League more seriously and it is hard for the likes of us to get to finals. I was amazed that Sevco (And, to an extant, Frankfurt) made it to the final last year and came within a tired Kent shot of winning it.

That should give us hope but the overall stats show that it is hard to do this. I would settle happily for a CL Group qualification and a bit of luck in our last 16 tie. Anything else would be a bonus.

  26. Tommy Joad…………Interesting reading your comments regarding Celtic’s chances of making a proper dent in Europe all we have to do is put away our greentinted glasses and look accross the city at our nearest rivals. It can be done.

They reached the Europa final taking some big scalps in the process and probably should have beaten Eintracht Frankfurt in the final before allowing the game to go to a penalty shootout. Newco then qualified for the Champions Lge group stage going the difficult route of the qualifiers disposing of Eindhoven in thhe playoff to get there under Giovanni VB, who incidently got a raw deal on account of his results against Celtic

. So no doubt it can be done if don’t keep losing to European minnows from Denmark, Norway and Hungary etc.

The League Championship in Portugal would be considered weak but the top clubs are getting ridiculous money for players they have scouted in Brazil who impress when they play in Europe and strenghten their teams with this huge transfer money.

I have great hopes for progress under Ange particularly in Europe providing we can retain our best players with additions and of course mannage to keep Ange at Celtic Park..
