Neither Ajax nor Celtic will be overconfident

508

Ajax sit top of the Dutch Eredivisie, ahead of fourth-placed PSV, who picked up three points in the Champions League last night. Four wins and a draw, away to Twente on Saturday, is a near-perfect start to the domestic campaign, although that was only Twente’s second point of the season, if that provides a glimmer of hope.

Form has been less convincing in Europe. An honourable 2-2 draw away to Rapid Vienna was made meaningless by a 2-3 defeat in Amsterdam in the Champions League qualifiers. Ajax then endured a tense two-leg Europa League qualifier against Czechs, Jablonec, which ended in a 1-0 aggregate win. Not that we should be dismissive of anyone on European form.

What will give Ronny Deila room for some encouragement is who Ajax have faced so far in the league. AZ (13th placed), Willem II (15th), NEC (10th) ADO Den Haag (12th), before dropping those points to Twente (16th). All they can do is beat the teams before them, but they will not have been stretched domestically. Even Jablonec are struggling in 6th place in the Czech league. Celtic should be able to provide a test at a higher tempo.

By any measure, Celtic are not without their problems. We’ve not kept a home clean sheet since the opening day of the league campaign against Ross County, and we’ve won only one of our last four away games – and that was against Dundee United who lost four on the bounce. But there’s three points to play for tomorrow, and I doubt either team are taking them for granted.

Intelligent and very interesting analysis – I’m sure there is much merit in all you say.

Just wonder how it will sit with Ronny’s stated aim, and action, using a “leaner squad” this season.

On a darker note – I believe our manager has till the end of the year to re-energise his stewardship – if we go out of Europe badly and still trail Aberdeen substantially, I’m sure there will be a change.

I don’t know what the club were supposed to do in this instance that they didn’t do.

They contacted season ticket holders in the area and asked a polite question.

They rightly veered away from contacting the person who had been identified.

Maybe the fella had come off a hard shift, who knows? It certainly seems like the problem hadn’t occurred before.

A polite letter. To many, instead of a targeted individual. The club should be congratulated on their diplomacy.

Although wi the price of a stamp nowadays,I’d have sent the one person involved some deodorant!

It is hard to point out our best game this season Ronny says we we were playing great stuff 3 weeks ago I dont remember. The game I remember the away game against Dundee Utd. We played a very changed team and I dont know if we played well or United were very poor probably a bit of both.We have struggled in my opinion most of the time since the start of the season. H.H.

On Thursday in the Dam we need a performance. A result would be good but by god we need to see a reaction from these players. A bit of fire in the belly and an up an at them attitude from all over the park. The fans will back the team, the team need to show the fans they’re journey was not invain.

    Get in tae thum.

I see Charlie bhoy never made the trip,

Wonder who the haun wringers are lining up to shoot down before the game this time.

  9. I only think we’ll qualify if the other teams decide to rest players like Hamburg did a few years ago.

  11. G67-From last thread,it’s good to see young Nesbitt away to Amsterdam with the squad,Ryan Christie should be there too IMO, invaluable experience. For those who say he is better staying at ICT,I disagree. He would be getting a start in this team at the moment.

Said when he signed he should have joined straight away. Would walk into any of the three positions behind the striker given current form of those being picked there at the moment (Forrest being the exception when fit)

  13. G67-I think we can take him in January, makes sense to take him then, and bed him in for next season.HH

  14. That’s the ole summer slipped away again and I’ve fancied a straw hat since June.

I did see one in the charity shop Main St, Ruggy and threatened the wife that I was buying it. I just got the usual facial expression she pulls when I mention “Knob Hats”, (as she calls them)

  15. Mulgrew, Allan & Armstrong all out injured for tomorrow.

None are particularly must-starts, although the loss of Mulgrew leaves Ronny’s with even fewer defensive options.

4-2-3-1 will be the formation, and the number of the formation shall be 4-2-3-1. For it is written.

Our problems are likely to at CB and up front – an untried defensive duo featuring an inexperienced player short on confidence alongside Simunovic making his debut is more than a tad worrying , while Johansen & Leigh Griffiths don’t offer a lot to a team almost certain to be on the defensive for much of the game.

This is assuming Deila doesn’t return to the Rogic/Griffiths Lustig/Johansen partnerships of the Aberdeen game, which would be suicidal.

  16. up_over_goal on 16th September 2015 2:05 pm

Was 4-1-4-1 v Qarabag away so wouldn’t be surprised if its that again.

Doesn’t matter what the formation is if we can’t defend and our midfield cant pass the ball to a teammate

Race creed gender are irrelevant they’re just Huns

  18. Looking forward to travelling over to Amsterdam with my young lad. Not sure what to expect from the team, but agree with others that a shift is badly needed and a positive result looks like a bonus at this stage.

Ah well, we have been given the baton, copyright @BRTH and it’s a duty and an honour to have to pass it on.

Sid. You are a new name on CQN to me but coming on spouting anyone heard rumours about John Collins in my opinion is in no way helpful to Celtic. My view is unless we know something is a fact we should keep rumours to ourselves.Ronny has said we are in a bad place at the moment and to get over it we need to stick together and help get the Bhoys on track that for me is what Celtic supporters do unless of course you are not a Celtic supporter. H.H. – See more at: http://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/police-scotland-and-the-sfa-in-the-dock/comment-page-10/#comments

I can assure you JFH we share a love and passion for Celtic, where we differ is when a problem occurs. Your way of dealing with that is to say nothing, hope it goes away, head in the sand stuff. I know another club that used that strategy, ended very badly. My way is discuss the problem, seek answers, then eliminate problem, not allowing problem to grow and fester.

GG posted giving an analogy about a building site saying it shouldn’t matter, get on with it. Excuse me for saying but that is nonsense. We are talking about millionaire footballers who work in a very tight group where harmony is vital.

So I hope I’ve explained why I came on here SPOUTING, do happy clappers spout?

One other thing I forgot to mention from my solid source is Celtic have a mole who is running to the press, so no need to scrawl CQN.

  20. One advantage of the current squad post VVD and Denayer-we don’t have to worry about losing any of them to an EPL team.

  21. Gary67

We’ll have to agree to differ on Qarabag. For me it was the standard 4-2-3-1 shape, not that it remains rigid throughout any game.

Whatever the formation, I think it matters who is played where. Lustig and Commons on the right, for example, is a much better bet than, say, Ambrose and Mackay-Steven.

Brown/Bitton are not the problem. They are a pretty reliable central midfield pairing, as their results bear out. Deila’s insistence on playing Johansen, who gives away the ball with every second pass, puts pressure on the rest, something which was covered up the unruffled Van Dijk & Denayer last season.

Before I sound like I have a Johansen fixation (too late, ed.), I think he could be ok if he had a technically better striker alongside him, e.g. Stokes, but Griffiths AND Johansen? You’re just handing possession to the opposition, and unlike Scottish teams, they won’t be giving it back any time soon.

It’s slim pickings in defence – I’d suggest Ambrose/Lustig at CB. They worked really effectively in the Shaktar return match. But that would mean Janko at RB in Amsterdam. Woooooaahhh!!!

Well, I did say it was slim pickings, didn’t I?

A few personal observations on the current ‘CQN Experience’…

    1. The Content</b? of CQN is what makes me constantly read, and occasionally post, on CQN.

    2. Looking at the ‘bigger picture’, I put a lot of the ‘negativity’ down to CQN being targeted by those who wish it, and us as Celtic Supporters, to be diminished. I exercise my choice to ‘scroll on by’.

    3. Some ‘negativity’ is a reflection of us currently not being where we want to be football wise, but we will prevail, and I always get to wake up as a Celtic Supporter! :-)

    4. The Android/Samsung/Note4 experience with Firefox is crap; far too slow and far too many crashes. However, I have switched to using Google Chrome which is much faster to load and doesn’t crash! I can now get back to enjoying Content again…

    5. The ‘CQN Experience’ on my PC is just fine.

    Yours in Celtic,

Sid. Fella glad to see your 100% Celtic supporter but I am sure it is better only to comment on things that you know and not rumours . You started by asking has anyone heard a rumour or words to that effect now your saying you have a source inside Celtic if im reading you correctly. Now if your source has told you something and you trust him or her you would surely start by saying I know this happened has anyone else heard about it not I have heard a rumour a rumour can come from anyone the Rangers supporter who works beside and only spouts negative nonsense .So thats is where I differ from you I like facts not gossip. H.H.

  24. Joe Filippis Haircut on

GREENPINTA. I think you will find a fact is always a fact someone may strike it lucky and tell you I have heard a rumour if it turns out to be a fact it has always been a fact. H.H.

  25. The thing is about John Collins… I just can’t trust people with small feet.
