Neither Ajax nor Celtic will be overconfident

508

Ajax sit top of the Dutch Eredivisie, ahead of fourth-placed PSV, who picked up three points in the Champions League last night. Four wins and a draw, away to Twente on Saturday, is a near-perfect start to the domestic campaign, although that was only Twente’s second point of the season, if that provides a glimmer of hope.

Form has been less convincing in Europe. An honourable 2-2 draw away to Rapid Vienna was made meaningless by a 2-3 defeat in Amsterdam in the Champions League qualifiers. Ajax then endured a tense two-leg Europa League qualifier against Czechs, Jablonec, which ended in a 1-0 aggregate win. Not that we should be dismissive of anyone on European form.

What will give Ronny Deila room for some encouragement is who Ajax have faced so far in the league. AZ (13th placed), Willem II (15th), NEC (10th) ADO Den Haag (12th), before dropping those points to Twente (16th). All they can do is beat the teams before them, but they will not have been stretched domestically. Even Jablonec are struggling in 6th place in the Czech league. Celtic should be able to provide a test at a higher tempo.

By any measure, Celtic are not without their problems. We’ve not kept a home clean sheet since the opening day of the league campaign against Ross County, and we’ve won only one of our last four away games – and that was against Dundee United who lost four on the bounce. But there’s three points to play for tomorrow, and I doubt either team are taking them for granted.

  1. Bournsouprecipe,

Good thinking. A clique of cliques, but if Carlsberg did rumours then it wouldn’t be a rumour it would be a leak.

  2. OK, so other than Majstorovic making his debut – as an established pro – v Utrecht, and Fraser’s unexpected 2nd half appearance v Rennes, next to said seasoned pro, there are no examples of CBs debuting for Celtic with a European match, never mind one away to opposition of Ajax’s quality.

    Okay, then.

Just over six months ago Celtic had a decent chance of being the only club in Britain still in Europe, which we lost out in part due to Virgil getting himself sent off, again. Ronnie needs to remind his players of that fact and tell them that there are eighteen points up for grabs, and you know something, nobody has won any of them. Yet.,

  8. So the latest “rumour” is the players dinnae like JC?

Och pair wee souls, imagine having to put up with that tyrant while earning your million pound contract?

If the blockheads had half a brain, they would be bothering him night and day, learning how to make yourself a better player and professional, who learns through development and sports science how to get the best out of your career.

Imagine if we had JC’s talent and application in our midfield right now?

Rumours feed the media including CQN !!!!!

We use our own judgement to decide the credibility of any said rumour

    Facts are more relevant –

Ronny started last year like a manager that had never managed at this level before (thats exactly what it was)

He then got us to where we should be (and was unlucky not to win the treble)

So a reasonable start to his managerial career – nothing exceptional – we should win the league and a cup

So I get a bit excited at what progress Ronny will make this year

We are out of the CL we are 5 points behind Aberdeen (causing a feeding frenzy in the media)

i’m not panicking – we should only change our manager as a last resort – and we are not there yet

But I just don’t feel or see or understand where he is taking us

I’m really trying to be positive

Of the last 4 or 5 Celtic Managers where do I put him ??

He is no O’Niell or Strachan not even a Lennon

    Mowbry ????

Im just underwhelmed with it all

    Positive advice required

  10. Not one for feeling I’m entitled to anything in life, but I certainly feel entitled that the players owe the fans a performance tomorrow.

Never mind tippy-tappy out of defence, for the first half hour, hoof anything into the stands that remotely looks like a baw, and then build from there.

One other point – Ronny headline on CQN – “Lets stick together”

yet he blames the players for any defeat (Malmo scared – Aberdeen Gordon)

Celtic must have a big game soon the destabilising rumours are coming thick and fast. Instead of getting behind the manager and the team some supporters prefer to discuss rumours. There are lots of insiders in our great club who like to feed taxi drivers, hairdressers and anyone willing to listen genuine insider rumours that they can post on various blogs informing the rest of us mere supporters that they have great inside contacts who only spill the beans to them.Pathetic really. H.H.

Yes 100% blame FLO. Every Celtic fan will be getting dogs abuse today because he can’t do his job properly. He should have sent a personal letter to the party involved or approached the person for a discrete conversation. Not tar everyone in that section to dodge the matter.

Spot on mate, it certainly made the huns day where I work. I’d forgotten how many hunchbacks are in there:(

One more point to ponder on, from memory did Celtic not comply with the police in giving out young supporters details, to me that was personal and if that was truelly the case, a letter sent to the fan with the hygiene problem would have been appropriate rather than tarring others.

  16. Interesting indictment of the Ibrox seven.

Obviously don’t want to get into the minutia or boldly go where no mans gone before.

But my recollection was that Craig Whyte and some of these chaps were arrested for activities around the sale of Oldco from Sir David Murray to Craig Whyte – last year I think.

Then Craig Whyte and some other chaps were arrested quite recently for activities around the sale of Oldco assets to Newco.

So could someone please advise, as all of them seem to be indicted for the forth coming Court appearance, is this now the one case or are there two separate cases?

    Hail Hail

BUTSYBHOY. It is only history repeating itself if there is any truth in the rumour it has been denied by Celtic and as we have a big game tomorrow there are folk with a vested interest in unsettling Celtic. H.H.
