Neither Ajax nor Celtic will be overconfident

508

Ajax sit top of the Dutch Eredivisie, ahead of fourth-placed PSV, who picked up three points in the Champions League last night. Four wins and a draw, away to Twente on Saturday, is a near-perfect start to the domestic campaign, although that was only Twente’s second point of the season, if that provides a glimmer of hope.

Form has been less convincing in Europe. An honourable 2-2 draw away to Rapid Vienna was made meaningless by a 2-3 defeat in Amsterdam in the Champions League qualifiers. Ajax then endured a tense two-leg Europa League qualifier against Czechs, Jablonec, which ended in a 1-0 aggregate win. Not that we should be dismissive of anyone on European form.

What will give Ronny Deila room for some encouragement is who Ajax have faced so far in the league. AZ (13th placed), Willem II (15th), NEC (10th) ADO Den Haag (12th), before dropping those points to Twente (16th). All they can do is beat the teams before them, but they will not have been stretched domestically. Even Jablonec are struggling in 6th place in the Czech league. Celtic should be able to provide a test at a higher tempo.

By any measure, Celtic are not without their problems. We’ve not kept a home clean sheet since the opening day of the league campaign against Ross County, and we’ve won only one of our last four away games – and that was against Dundee United who lost four on the bounce. But there’s three points to play for tomorrow, and I doubt either team are taking them for granted.

  1. I like Ronny D but whether he will be around for another season depends on his ability to learn. So far this is where he’s failing. He has had a few windows now to bring in experience and a leader on the park. The latter is controversial – As much as i love Broony , i think he lacks football intelligence and the know how to organize the team to deal with situations on the park.

Off the park , we lack tactical brain! Perhaps zonal marking can work but surely it depends on the players you have – what are their strengths.

I’m supportive but really think we are way to flimsy right now!

  2. When does fact become branded a rumour, is it when it becomes smelly and inconvenient? Or is just branded rumour on bruised opinion?

  4. So the main problem facing some sensitive Celtic supporters is some zombies will poke fun at them for having a smelly fan? How should you respond to such horrific provocation?

Burst into tears, quit your job, get a new team?

If only you had some ammunition to fire back at such zombies.

But the newest club in Scotland won 500 hundred games in a row ( new world record) AND this is before they splash £30 million in January.

Bad bad JP Taylor. Cannae take much more. Aff for a bath.

  7. Ola from sunny Madeira. Just seen a (local?) youngster with away top and Griffiths 9 on the back, from tour bus near Camara de Lobos. It’s a sign, I tell ye, at least I hope it is. By the way, the viewing platform at Cabo Girao, 580 metres above sea level on the edge of a cliff with glass bottom , is pretty scary – but what an awesome view out over the Atlantic and west towards Funchal. Here’s hoping for a good result tomorrow evening. As it happens I’ve sourced a suitably tic-friendly Irish bar in which to observe and imbibe simultaneously. Just can’t get enough, indeed!

Where is the personal attack? It was you who said I wanted to disrupt Celtic, sorry you’re well wrong bud. You want a Celtic World where they’re are no problems, I prefer reality.

Have you considered why just after the season starts Frail quits? I’m not saying that has anything to do with JC, but you must think something’s not right, yes.

Or what about the players body language? No problems for you either?

  9. Watched the Sheep last night.

Hanging on at the end, but generally good defensively and better organised than us, which wouldn’t be hard just now. Their right back was outstanding, young loanee from Liverpool, Ryan McLaughlin from Nornirn. Big, fast, strong and skillful. We’ll have to up it a gear to win the league, which we will do.

Sid. Naive , see a Doctor are not a personal attack ? now when I said there are people with a vested interest in unsettling Celtic before a big game I mentioned no names. However, you chose to jump in strange that.I have no idea why Frail quit other than what he told the media. Now body language I have just seen Leigh Griffiths and John Collins at Glasgow Airport on TV and there body language was fine in fact when interviewed John Collins was quite upbeat. Sid I will go no further other than to ask you point me to where I said Sid is trying to unsettle Celtic however,if the cap fits you should wear it. H.H.

The reaction to odourgate by club liason officer was both embarrassing and pathetic in equal measure. At the first whiff of the problem JPT should have got the sniffer dogs out and isolated the offender. After which the PLC could have marketed a new Celtic deodorant, (Real Madrid have already got one), available only to those who sit in the prestigious seats in the ol’ new stand.

Ah well let’s just bury it and pretend it never happened and let the more naive bloggers imagine that everything is sweetness and light at Celtic Park and everyone is the best of pals with everyone else inside its environs and everyone agrees that the management team and back room staff and training methods is the best we have available and that more senior players wouldn’t dare to approach Mr Lawell to voice their concerns regarding same

Meanwhile, in a less monochrome world where a fuller range of reactions are available, Celtic fans will range from la la la (sticking fingers in their ears to hear no evil), to yawning, to Zatso? to So what? to Why should that concern me? to Tell me more- this might be interesting? and all the way through to “Give me all the details- I luv this sort of stuff and can’t wait to tell the other ghirls/bhoys. If things weren’t all sweetness and light, and god help those that thought it was, what would or should supporters do about it? Take sides? Based on partial information from partial sources? It is quite correct for a workplace dispute to be handled internally (that includes senior players and Mr. Lawell but does not include me and you). I never suspected you of being a Trotskyite that needed every issue aired and put to a universal vote amongst the support to decide each outcome. Frankly, I can think of 1000 resolutions I would want aired before that one.

Let me assure you that the sporting media are well aware of the happenings at Celtic Park Lennoxtown and elsewhere and they have no need to trawl through Internet forums and blogs to get their headlines although the more paranoid amongst us would imagine otherwise

No assurance needed as I covered this point. Our enemies are quite capable of doing us damage- we do not need to volunteer to do it for them.

It’s also probably a fact that there are more players inside Celtic Park who are more likely to have more sporting msm journalists on speed dial than they are to have authors of Internet blogs and bloggers phone numbers tucked away on their phones

True- Johny Gould and Craig Burley were proponents of that dark art. Paul McStay and Tom Boyd were not. I know whose approach I’d line up behind

Anyway heard a bit of tittle tattle on the Jordan McMillan saga last night but as its tittle tattle and doesnt have any implications for Celtic I will keep it to myself

Good for you! Self regulation is an important step on the road to maturity.

As for the term tittle tattle I doubt that most amateur sporting blogs would exist without it

I am accused of having posts that are too lengthy (and too frequent, by some) but in all thee acres of words I have scribed, I don’t think I have spread gossip once, mostly because I don’t have any but also because I can keep a confidence and because I decide whether it is helpful or harmful to spread what you know. Those that are not bound by discretion and trust, end up hacking a dead girl’s phone because they elected themselves to decide what is in the public interest.

I did once quote a comment which Bobby Lennox made to me, on the one occasion that I have spoken to him but it was a self-deprecating point and he did not swear me to secrecy. Any poster on here is free to reveal whatever tittle-tattle they like about themselves but, given the reaction to your “Reb tunes for increased tips” policy, they should maybe employ a bit more discretion. But what is worse, is revealing confidences about others that you would not want to reveal about yourself, whether that is the subject of a Disciplinary Enquiry at work, as in this case, or revealing the online dating behaviour of other posters you do not like.

Speak to you later as its a good drying day and I’ve got to go and get a washing on

Quite apt. I hope you have taken care not to leave your dirty underwear on public display. If they are flying alongside our club’s strip on the line, it could reflect badly on the club. You would not want that now, would you?

  20. So James Forrest has stated the odour letter as fake.

It looks like JPTs tweet where he ‘exclusively revealed’ it was genuine might have been a dig at the smsm. Seems pretty obvious now since he quote marked exclusively reveal in his tweet.

To be honest it went over my head at the time.

  25. Dexter says PAY THE LIVING WAGE CELTIC PLC on

Paul’s glass half full analysis unfortunately does not have me brimming with anticipation. Whatever way you look at it, Ajax are seven games unbeaten. Whatever way you look at it, Leigh Griffiths is our only likely goalscorer and hasn’t yet done it in Europe. Whatever way you look at it, our stock in European football circles has shrunk. Whatever way you look at it, Celtic Park will rarely be 70% full this season. I sense a huge malaise amongst the fans. A malaise that will not be cure by four poisonous matches against Sevco next season. The only way enthusiasm will return is action from the board to disprove the perception that we are a feeder club for mid table English premier league sides. That action would include the crazy concept of signing some quality, proven players every now and again; tying our best players to contracts with valuable release clauses; leading from the front by establishing a proper campaign amongst similarly hamstrung clubs to set up a euro league; considering summer football; ditching any collective TV bargaining with SFA/SPL in the meantime…
