Neither club has imperative to do Griffiths deal

953

When an unexpected name flies into the frame from left field there’s always a concern about what you’ve written about him before.  I still remember the day we signed Kenny Miller, and an earlier blog with my assessment of the player (subsequently found to be on the money).  While it’s important to be fair when assessing players, I’m not in the business of trashing them before they kick a ball for Celtic, so Miller’s signing was not a comfortable one.

With this in mind, I typed “Leigh Griffiths” into the articles database to check what had been written.  Apart from match reports, there was only one comment, the day after last season’s Scottish Cup Final:

“Leigh Griffiths has had plenty of uncomplimentary discourse written about him this season, most of it deserved, so it should be recorded that he was the first Hibs player to return applause in the direction of Celtic fans yesterday, closely followed by his team-mates.

“This is the way football should be. For too long our game has been poisoned by the unique kind of rivalry you got in Scotland. More of the same, please.”

He unquestionably did deserve the criticism that came his way last year.  If he gets his move to Celtic he needs to grow as a person, as well as a player, which is a big challenge.  His move towards the Celtic support at Hampden was a modest but necessary first step towards reassessing other people.

Having said this, don’t go ordering your ‘Griffiths’ shirt just yet, I reckon a deal has no more than a 50% chance of happening.  Wolves didn’t invite our interest and our need is to be ready by June, not February.  Neither club has an imperative to do this deal, which is often an omen for snags to get in the way. Patience required, as you know………

Reminder to everyone who booked tickets for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner that they have to be paid by this Friday! Let me know if you can’t find details, celticquicknews@gmail.com

What would be of interest when a signing move ‘hits the buffers’ is why, not necessarily which player or club. Was it transfer fee, wages, playing in SPFL, agent’s fees etc.

Would limit spurious speculation from SMSM and keep fans in the loop somewhat.

For me I have no real problem with LG

I know what we are getting, and im expecting a scott macdonald type quality

I reckon he is better than Bangura, Pukki and blade

so if we can let one or two from that group move on we can hopefully reduce the quantity while (maybe only slightly) improve the quality

I dont think he is the next henrik, but even though we won 4-0 on Sunday we were poor at the front

BTW I have to disagree with those who thought the beeb edited out all celtics first half chances on Sunday, in my opinion Hibs were the most dangerous side until we scored the second goal and the gamechanger. I guess its all about opinions, but for me we could have done with a better striker on Sunday (just in case DVD doesnt score a belter EVERY week)

or kris commons for that matter

In the summer we wasted approx £6m on attackers who have failed to impress

In the summer Griffiths was returning to a club in a state of disarray (after having been relegated )..on a limited contract

We showed no interest in Griffiths then…why not …given that Lenny appears to like him

    We also re-signed Stokes

We now have a number of under performing attackers and are chasing a player who will now cost a good deal more than he would have in the summer

Seems strange and almost cack handed to try and sign him now …unless its a backhanded admission that Lenny doesn`t like what he has

    28 January,

    Interesting and highly relevant post.

Over the last couple of years there have been numerous posts the thrust of which was how the various owners of another club were taking its not too bright fans for mugs.

Transfer window after transfer window, foolish hopes of wow signings are raised, only to be sacrificed on the altar of extreme fiscal prudence.

The cavalier changing of fixtures is only another symptom of PL and DD’s lack of concern and contempt for fans.

They will never see things from the fans point of view until the fans are no longer there.

On the Liegh Griffiths affair. The guy deserves a shot a sorting himself out. Just not at Celtic Park.

TonyDonnelly, i’ve watch you try to bully people on this forum & I don’t like what i see. You seem to have some agenda and unfortunately can’t see the opinions of other celtic fans or respect them at all! You make some interesting points & I respect you viewpoints but this anti Celtic Trust , GB etc is becoming a bit boring tbh.

    Intolerance?

You posted a judgemental condemnation of young Griffiths’ character and his eternal unsuitability to wear a Celtic jersey based on one mistake he made with a tweet using racist language. Which he subsequently apologised for.

I add a riposte accusing you of pious, holier-than-thou, unforgiving, non-christian attitudes.

Some twelve hours hence, you return a long post about intolerance on the blog; the intolerance reference being solely about my intolerance of YOUR post.

    Victimhood at its best.

So I take it you won’t be there despite the fact it is not a CST meeting. I’m sure that JF would step aside and let you chair the ‘open to all fans’ meeting if you wanted but that might show up what ?????

Fortunately it will be standing room only again from fans across a wide spectrum who want answers first hand rather than listen to disaffected bloggers ranting on rather than showing up.

  9. I think ( only my opinion) Lenny has said hold it! I want a say in the next striker coming in, and I want LG, just a plain and simple coaches request, as to who picked the others that have came lately is any ones guess, but I have a feeling it wasent Lenny, just a thought, prob. Wrong but.

  10. Will Joe Ledley and Georgios Samaras start ?

Will we put the emphasis on youth or on extending our unbeaten run.? Both if possible.

Will we opt for more flair that seems to be more associated away from Parkhead.?

Will we get an indication who will partner LG if and when he comes to Parkhead. If we have to pay circa £1.5 million IMO he will be a definite first pick. NFL will know another squad player is unacceptable.

Will we see more of our new Norwegian player of the year.?

IMO our team selection and subs tomorrow will be more interesting than usual and give us an indication of long term thinking.

Hopefully a good crowd and similar backing that we get away from home.

quonno , thanks, I just feel they are taking the fans for granted & are bullish that the cash cows will continue to be milked. Any marketing expert will tell you its easier & cheaper to keep a good customer than prospect for new ones! Young fans have more alternatives than ever & the bored are in serious danger of pricing fans out of going to matches. Fans want to be entertained & as good as the goals were on saturday i didn’t feel entertained. At £29/26 its not good value for money & at some stage soon lack of season ticket sales may end up with cash turnstiles. We are closing chunks of the stadium yet are pricing fans who cannot afford season books or want to turn up on the day not to go.

If you’d bothered reading all that I’ve posted I believe I’ve shown that I will be tolerant of LG should he sign.

I genuinely hope he becomes a wonderful footballer and an even better human being.

I just don’t think it should be at Celtic.

Incidentally, you’ve not got a leg to stand on when it comes to lack of tolerance. Read your initial post for reference.

I agree that selling the club and renting the properties is the only way to make money. Unless of course someone like Dave King gifts tens of millions on pounds to the club with nothing expected in return. Not really likely, but passion can override common sense sometimes and he may indeed see this as a charitable donation.”

Nooooooooooooo, Tony Bhoy thinks there may be wolves in sheeps clothing at that meeting, anyway, I have nothing to question Celtic about, as far as I am concerned, the club is being looked after, and all is well in my little Celtic world, others not happy, I would say attend the said meeting, and get it off your chest.

Por Cierto, I’m glad you agree, i’m sure many fans with season books if asked are they getting value for money would say they aren’t. Going to CP is a habit also and i know a few fans who have other priorities at the moment & have given up their season books. I am fearful that the board are taking fans for granted nearly 54,000 season books under Fergus what now? No imagination in terms of selling tickets to fans who want to go on the day, & the quandry is for PL next season how many books will be sold? Will they persevere with this £29/ ticket more than Real Madrid & Barcelona from my previous experiences to watch the team, as much as I love celtic i can’t justify this at present.

So here are some questions imo that would need to be posed & that we don’t have the answers to!!!

How many fans from further afield are cheesed off with fixture changes & timings of matches & have given up books because of this?

How many are gone due to a certain club going bust?

How many are not going due to austerity & cost of season books?

How many will not go due to GB/lack of atmosphere & perceived/actual collusion by PLC in its treatment of fans by the authorities?

How many aren’t going due to cheating/SFA collusion with certain dead team?

How many aren’t going due to natural wastage (kids, different priorities, work etc)?

How many aren’t going due to the product on the park & standard of player?

Would make interesting reading & points for discussion…

I’ve been advocating the same idea for a couple of years mate, the sight of guys queuing for ages at the Ticket Office ,then waiting again to get in to the Park is ridiculous.Cash or ATM turnstiles can’t be difficult to install. Not everyone can afford a Season Ticket, and some might just decide to go on the day of a game .

Why don’t you come along and ask them? It was very democratic, everyone who had something to say or ask was heard. There were those from the CSA, CST, GB, concerned parents, lobbyists, petitioners, journalists (not SMS) and many just concerned fans etc etc.

I like to hear all inputs, form my opinions based on them and then share, always open to other points of view. A very good synopsis of the discussions was published on the CST website, and all actions / questions were agreed by the body of the hall. Total transparency. I’m sure your opinions would be listened to and welcome.

I’ve always felt sorry for those people who stand in the corners of pubs and complain about things but never vote or do anything about it. Democracy is a rare gift and should be exercised at every opportunity

I’d like to think that Robert Snodgrass is the one that got away, …..for now. Given his background he would have no problem settling in at Parkhead if he was to arrive at the end of the season. If Lee Griffiths is genuinely available, then it would be better to get him now, especially if, we were to lose Samaras, which looks increasingly likely. Tremendous movement on and off the ball with ability to attack from either side, on his own if necessary. Good header of a ball as well. Will also be working with both Neil and wee Gordon over the next couple of years or so, ie in good hands. I happen to believe signing for us could be the making of him, that he’ll make the most of it. Hope he is in the team for the cup tie against Aberdeen!
