Neither club has imperative to do Griffiths deal

953

When an unexpected name flies into the frame from left field there’s always a concern about what you’ve written about him before.  I still remember the day we signed Kenny Miller, and an earlier blog with my assessment of the player (subsequently found to be on the money).  While it’s important to be fair when assessing players, I’m not in the business of trashing them before they kick a ball for Celtic, so Miller’s signing was not a comfortable one.

With this in mind, I typed “Leigh Griffiths” into the articles database to check what had been written.  Apart from match reports, there was only one comment, the day after last season’s Scottish Cup Final:

“Leigh Griffiths has had plenty of uncomplimentary discourse written about him this season, most of it deserved, so it should be recorded that he was the first Hibs player to return applause in the direction of Celtic fans yesterday, closely followed by his team-mates.

“This is the way football should be. For too long our game has been poisoned by the unique kind of rivalry you got in Scotland. More of the same, please.”

He unquestionably did deserve the criticism that came his way last year.  If he gets his move to Celtic he needs to grow as a person, as well as a player, which is a big challenge.  His move towards the Celtic support at Hampden was a modest but necessary first step towards reassessing other people.

Having said this, don’t go ordering your ‘Griffiths’ shirt just yet, I reckon a deal has no more than a 50% chance of happening.  Wolves didn’t invite our interest and our need is to be ready by June, not February.  Neither club has an imperative to do this deal, which is often an omen for snags to get in the way. Patience required, as you know………

Cheers. From a selfish perspective I’m delighted, I was going to miss the original game because of a Christening.

Sadly, again it’s a major inconvenience for those who’ve already made arrangements.

Just in case any CQNers are unaware there has been some terrific bampottery on the current TSFM thread, perhaps going back a week to ten days now – a poster named ecobhoy in particular has been a ‘must-read’, with some absitively fascinating history of Glasgow’s East End to boot.

Unless Tony Donnelly, Parkheadcumsalford or any of their chums offer up an alternative forum for discussion or offer any suggestions at all for resolution of the issues affecting Celtic supporters at this point in time then their anti Celtic Trust, anti Green Brigade points are invalid.

Given a possible forum for discussing and resolving issues it is childish and petty to simply slate the organiser, any time they happen to get a mention, because of a personal agenda. Absolutely laugable when no alternative suggestions are offered or the issues even debated.

These meetings are open to all CELTIC supporters.

  4. Hamiltontim,

Did you hear the news about Fr Muldoon? Passed away yesterday, so I heard.

    Another good one gone.

  5. Celtic haven’t conceded a goal for 855 minutes, are on a 22 match unbeaten run, winning 11 matches in a row in, and have signed two players in the still open transfer window.

That’s awful news mate I knew obviously that he’d been unwell but have been going to a different parish for several months so hadn’t had any updates regarding his health.

    May he RIP.

  7. Not wanting to carry on the LG debate, and i know Hamiltontim is more than capable of making his own points, but I think his more general point is standards of behaviour both on and off the park while being a CFC player.I for one have always subscribed to this, and have witnessed guys who have embarrassed me while a Celtic player.I am not a saint or want guys dragged down to the Gallows’ Gate,I like to think we have standards that can be adhered to.Maybe because i came from a background of never being “off duty” through my line of work that i have this outlook.I don’t think a Celtic Code of Conduct is too much to expect.Hope this hasn’t come across as too pious ,no Tim Hat on though.HH

  8. Hamiltontim – very sad indeed.

Believe the funeral is Friday back in Donegal – suspect there will also be a service at St Peters.

As you know I am a Our Lady & St Annes man but still knew Fr Muldoon – a real character.

    All the best, hail hail.

How many fans from further afield are cheesed off with fixture changes & timings of matches & have given up books because of this?

How many are gone due to a certain club going bust?

How many are not going due to austerity & cost of season books?

How many will not go due to GB/lack of atmosphere & perceived/actual collusion by PLC in its treatment of fans by the authorities?

How many aren’t going due to cheating/SFA collusion with certain dead team?

How many aren’t going due to natural wastage (kids, different priorities, work etc)?

How many aren’t going due to the product on the park & standard of player?

If 1,000 fans don’t buy a season ticket for each of those reasons it will effect our crowds. Add to the list illegal streaming of matches.

Given the crowd at the Nou Camp in their last televised game Barcelona, and their fans, must be asking the same questions. It’s a general trend throughout European football. Attendances for League Games are plummeting and only CL games in the latter stages are commanding higher numbers. I still think it’s the cost of attending football that is the main reason por cierto

Well no doubt this is the case, yet I hope if Lenny is espousing this thinking it is because he is a shrewd negotiator.

We need to get a Striker of a least Leigh Griffths calibre before June.

So unless some of the other aul’ irons in the fire are looking like they’re going to be glowing white hot in the next few days we need to get this deal done.

    Hail Hail

  20. Why is LG no longer a first pick for Wolves despite being their top scorer? Does anyone know?

There’s a young guy playing for Notts County who has scored as many goals as LG in the same league and Notts County, unlike Wolves, are a struggling team.

I’m disappointed that Celtic are looking for strikers continually. Seems to be a hit or miss strategy. If Neil can turn LG into a top player, can’t he do that with Watt, McGregor, Balde, Stokes, Fridjonsson, Atajic, Bangura (no, forget that one)?

  21. paolosboots FC before PLC on

Yorkbhoy, i think sadly its possibly more imo! I still feel if we had a team playing attractive football a la versus Hearts & Motherwell , together with imaginative gate prices then that would put bums on seats. I thought we were going to see more of this but that hasn’t materialized for some reason. The bigger the crowd the better the atmosphere (pity a solution couldn’t be brokered between club & GB) no group of fans is bigger than PL i suppose. Will more fans going then more peripheral spend on likes of food, gambling, merchandizing etc.

PL thinks its worth £29 then we’re not all on £1m wages so his perspective is bound to be clouded.

  22. Por Cierto

I don’t watch much football other than Celtic and York but I have caught some euro matches on TV. I agree the amount of empty seats at games was a surprise to me. I did see one French game that looked close to a sell out and the noise and energy from the fans was brilliant, can’t remember which game.

Not getting into a GB discussion but you want fans who are watching at home saying ” I wish I was there”

    Por Cierto

Exactly – cost and I would say atmosphere are the two main factors in falling attendances across Europe.

At least, the two factors that something can be done about. If youngsters have other options at the same time as the game they would rather partake in then less can be done about that.

The Germans, funnily enough, so far seem to be immune to the problems faced in other European countries(including England)- the cost and atmosphere in the German stadiums is also one of the biggest differences to match going fans in the UK.

79caps, a fair point, maybe his hands are tied & he cant spend more than £2.5m on a player. I find it hard to believe that we have a scouting system that earmarks players & i’m sure he had a huge list in the summer but now we can’t be any more imaginative than LG. I am keeping my powder dry till saturday & hope we’re not being short changed as tends to happen. If PL thinks that is a strategy that’s got a future then he might is sadly mistaken & i’m worried that we will end up in a downwards trajectory, poor product on pitch equals fewer fans, less money for players…..

  30. 79caps

I’m in favour of signing LG as he is better than anyone currently in the Celtic team ( other than Kris Commons) at puting the ball in the net. I’d love to see whoever he replaces sold on. I don’t care which striker he replaces he will improve the team in that department. If I were to choose it would be goodbye Stokes. I’d also now bullet Ledley, Sammi, and Brown as they are not the future and are drawing down big wages for a job that is already done.

I do agree that Celtic appear to have a hit and hope signing strikers and it is not working. I’m not sur a bout Pukki but I need to see more of Balde. I suspect he is the real deal. If he is Tony Watt can stay in Belguim indefinitely..
