Nerves jangle a week ahead of Europe

890

You and I have been through a few close seasons together, so  it’s no surprise we have this uncomfortable feeling as we look ahead to (hopefully) four hugely important Champions League qualifiers while contemplating how ring-rusty Celtic have looked preseason.  These games really don’t matter, of course, they are there to allow us to experiment and build fitness for the real challenges ahead, but you would rather we were turning teams over 4-0 than being on the receiving end.  Evidence, perhaps, that the experiments were leading somewhere.

Lots of coverage today of the fall-out from Friday’s meeting between the SFA and Sevco, some of it informed.  Huge issues clearly still remain before they will be granted permission to join the SFA but they would not be helped by their prospective manager, Ally McCoist, walking away this week.   Sevco have not sold many season tickets but if McCoist goes their chances of doing to will become increasingly scarce. Friday’s comment from McCoist sounded like a scene-setter for a resignation letter.

  1. huns season tickets, based on mine that is them being charged £335.00 to watch Elgin City, Peterhead, etc. NO CHANCE they are selling them to anybody.

Agree – a real scene setter from Calamity. He is clearly drawing on all his experience from working in television…

  3. bournesouprecipe (13:06): “I see that Sevco 5088 Media appear to have announced season ticket prices this morning. And sash at the turnstiles for the Brechin extravaganza.”

I’m afraid you are way wide of the mark on this one Bourne. It is actually sash at the turncoats for Brechin.

Incidentally, CQNYorkshire understands that the Sevco5088 ticket office received an enquiry this morning asking: “See they season ticket prices what ye’ve just released. Do they include the Auld Firm games?”

    They still don’t get it.

  5. Of course you realise that now that the SFA have bent over backwards, broken just about every rule in the book, delayed, delayed, delayed, bullied, threatened armageddon (the list goes on and on and on) on behalf of RFC, you will have to do the same for any other club which is having financial problems….

Any other club can legitimately demand going to the same extreme measures to keep them afloat.

And that applies, even when (oops I mean ‘if’) all your efforts come to nothing.

The SFA, the most appropriate acronym in history.

  6. Hopefully tomorrow night we will see that nugget Whittaker getting booted up into the air by Broonie.

Havnt lurked for over a week and didn’t even know the score against Ajax. Had far more important things to attend too. Just read over yesterdays comments. Posters have been submitting similar doomsday scenarios on here for 6+ years now.

Friendlies mean nothing, been to a handful, will never attend one again except for the prospect of camaraderie at Celtic Park. In a football sense, match practice, fitness, training and experimental sessions, thats all they are.

Read comments stating that we should be going all out to win every game, no matter they being friendly or not. I think if we were getting serious injury due to going all out in a friendly, we’d be pretty pissed off.

I’ve not finished it yet but ‘The Art of Fielding’by Chad Harbach is pretty good; it will teach you a little about baseball and a lot about life.

    Thank God.

if true, It’s shocking their parents let an 8 year old and 2 year old out by themselves at 8pm.

  13. Roy Croppie, that does of course assume that they aren’t knocked out before the stage at which Celtic enter the draw.

However, imagine the shockwaves if Celtic were to match what is still probably the biggest shock result in Scottish Cup history by losing 0-1 to a third division team bearing the name Rangers!

isolated defeats in pre season friendlies mean nothing by themselves unless a pattern starts to emerge of a team lacking the required tools to get the job done.

Remember going down to manchester during mon’s period in charge were we tore man utd a new one a few days before doing the same to ajax in amsterdam in a champs league qualifier.

you could see something special was happening in that friendly versus man utd.

i think it’s fair to say that so far nothing special is happening but that could change very quickly. it will have to or Lenny’s record in european qualifiers will leave a lot to be desired.

“The movie will begin in five moments” the mindless voice announced,

“All those unseated will await the next show”.

We filed slowly and languidly into the hall,

The auditorium was vast and silent,

as we seated and were darkened the voice continued,

“The programme for this evening is not new, you’ve seen this entertainment through and through, you’ve seen your birth, your life and death, you might recall all of the rest, did you have a good world when you died, enough to base a movie on?”

The day before that Man U game they arrived back in the country the day before after a tour to China. I was at that game – it was a great night – but it told us nothing about either team.

A few years later Gordon Strachan’s Celtic lost 3-0 at home to Man U’s youth team & Paul Scholes only to beat them 1-0 in the CL when the actual competitive games were underway.

Pre-season friendly form is not a reliable indicator of competitive form and I wish people would stop treating it as such.

No doubt. It’s not normal that though is it. Two young girls going out at that time of night in the first place is it?

Spending all night a derelict house?

    Doesnt add up.

Anyway main thing is they were safe and well.
